Kiora is right. Metal that has screaming or growling in it is often an acquired taste--like coffee. I found that to be true with the album "Dusk and Her Embrace," and even with Sirenia's "At Sixes and Sevens." People who do acquire the taste often like it because it's such raw energy.

I love the shrieking vocals of Dani Filth, and the deep, guttural growls of Morten Veland... I'm more for the guttural stuff than screaming because it reminds me of a dangerous monster. But I like screaming--as long as it's done by someone who's good at it. It's chaotic and fierce and a release of tension.

It's really something you have to acquire, so if you get a headache listening to it, don't try it--it's not worth putting yourself in pain.

Nicely said! I couldn't agree more. There's something about metal that really puts me at ease, but sometimes I listen to certain groups because I admire the singer. Arch Enemy is a perfect example. If my friend hadn't told me that Angela Gossow was a woman I would have assumed that Arch Enemy had a male singer. She's the best female vocal I can think of under this genre. I haven't heard of many groups, though.
