As Shinsou explains on.. one of the talk pages,
Ryou played The World as Sora, but when he was Data Drained by Skeith and later woke up, he had no memories of it and his parents never told him, so he just lived life until 2016, when he got interested in The World R:2 when he made Haseo, who, funnily enough, followed the same theme as Sora.
Though, er. Is this realy a spoiler? It's not directly metioned in the games or anything.
Edit: BTW, this is from the .hack//G.U. Perfect Guidebook, which makes it as official as it can get. It also confirms that Elk is Endrance, saying that Kaoru playing R:1 and was a close compnion with a cat-type PC.

I know that it's been said to bits,but Sora is the pure form of liquid awsome,and deserves 3 uber awards and an alternate award all on his own.

I think ultimately it would have to be Crim, because he's really tough, helps people in need, and doesn't mix real life with the game (except the “magic spell” he gives to Subaru).

Even after all the new .hack// games and anime that have come out, I would still have to say Tsukasa is my favorite .hack// character.

Well in .hack//Sign episode 28 Elk's in it and Elks my favorite character and Endrance in the .hack character
Which Endrance is Elk!! 
, But not counting that... the main characters in Sign that are my favorites are... Tsukasa, Sora, Macha, Mimiru, oh and Aura...
