When it was announced that the main characters of GU are not the dot hackers from the old games they mearly said something similar to there are endings and new beginings. Later the announcement of the fire at cc corp explained how all the all characters lost their old avitars. If one of the Infinity Eight is an old player its Endrance(Elk).

There is not enough evidence to prove that Endrance is/isn't Elk so dont argue about it.

I am sure though if there is a cameo appearance from an old character it will be Balmung. He's been in every .hack so far in one way or another.

sorry i was tired when i posted that but you get what im saying.
Oh and the anouncement im talking about was on the site way befor anyone knew of the fire at CC corp

Avatar-A variant phase or version of a continuing basic entity

Therefore what one calls a PC or NPC, or Monster for that matter is as well called an avatar. Though to stay on topic, I believe the only character/s one might see again are older Mirielle and maybe A-20.

I think I'm going to try marketing some iron-on T-shirt logos once the game is released:

"I spent ten months waiting for G.U. Elk and all I got was ths lousy Piros!"
