Anyway, more on topic... well, I can't say I play a ton of games, but here's a list still I guess:

1) Manly cheerleaders from the Ouendan series; they cheerlead to save the world. How is that not awesome.
2) Vivi from Final Fantasy IX; the most empathetic character in that game, holy jeez.
3) Kite from .hack, 'cause he'll always be the best protagonist in the .hack games in my book.
4) Detective Gumshoe from the Ace Attorney series; any character that's managed to hold on to his job after being THAT much of a doofus deserves a spot on my list.
5) The King of All Cosmos from the Katamari Damacy series; need I explain why?

Hard to make a list about it for me....given that i tend to have a top 5 for EACH game, and i consider several characters as the "best" in their own respective worlds, status and conditions, so making a top 5 of ALL games it's pretty hard since i'm comparing characters and events that shouldn't exactly be compared like this. There's also some characters which i don't want to add as, even though they're in videogames, they "belong" more to the "anime world" (DBZ and Naruto, for example). But let's see:

1. Dante (Devil May Cry series)
2. Solid Snake (Metal Gear Solid series)
3. Kratos (God of War series)
4. Kefka (Final Fantasy VI)
5. Albert Wesker (Resident Evil series)
   
   Honorific Mention: Igniz (King of Fighters 2001)

Yes, not even Cecil, anyone from my signature, or anyone from .Hack "belongs" in this list. This list is actually most based upon the "most badass, extremely powerful, who accomplished everything they ever wanted or had to do without fail"...except maybe for the last ones, but still, they did accomplish everything and succeeded in all of their goals, and the fact they "lose" is mostly because the main character has to defeat the villian and win the game, else the game wouldn't be complete >-> If it was about "overall favorite", then i could've included Cecil and Albedo (who aren't THAT strong or badass...but i freaking love them), and if it was about "most iconic characters"...then the list definetly belongs to the likes of Mario, Link and Pacman. But yeah o3o
And sorry to include a 6th character, but i had to. Igniz deserves the honorific mention because, even though he only appeared once and wasn't really all successful or remembered for what he did (he was just all "LOL I'M THE REAL BAD GUY IMMA KILL YOU AND TAKE OVER TEH WORLDZ NOW")...he's one of the STRONGEST, HARDEST and MOST BADASS characters i've ever seen in gaming. You can spend YEARS fighting him and never beat him because he pulls out one of several cheap OHKO tricks whenever he feels like (SNK boss. lol), and his Brutal God Project is one of the best and most "brutal" attacks i've seen in gaming.

2. Ethan Mars, because I loved Heavy Rain, and he made me really think hard in a game, DURING gameplay.
3. Gold/Ethan, he fought Red on Mt. Silver and I cried tears of joy. For real, when I was 8 he was the most badass being in existence.
4. Megaman X, I loved the Megaman X games, and played them all, and I liked Zero, but X was always just, I don't know, in command. He always seemed like the main character, even if you were playing Zero's story.
5. Kite, You can't not love him, it's just impossible.
