I would't really consider a mosquito bite an attack, and if they were sentient I certainly wouldn't swat them (I'd be justifiably pissed at their choice of action, though), but the angels on the other hand certainly like to go to town killing insignificant U.N. forces. Also buildings, civilians, whatever happens to be in the way. Their end goal isn't to end humanity, my point was just that they're jerks. And this is on top of the evil things they do to try and achieve their goal (humanity not being any better).

Granted, the entirety of humanity is counted as a single Angel, Lilin. It's entirely possible that the Angels have absolutely no awareness that humans are separate entities, or even that we're sentient at all, ala the Xenomorphs in Ender's Game. The Angels certainly aren't outright malicious; they're attacked first in almost every encounter, and when they're not, they're just plowing through in a straight bee-line for Adam/Lilith/The Eva/Whatever is tripping their Mommy Sense.

Uh, have you even seen Eva? There are several Angels that use humans' individuality/sentience as a core component of their strategy (Bardiel, Tabris, and to some extent Arael, Armisael, and others), so I think they understand full well. Like I said, humans are equally at fault, I'm not saying the Angels are worse, just that they go way beyond self-defense at times (Humans do too, and at least Angels don't use and betray each other). I guess some of the Angels could be slower than the others and blissfully unaware of the pain and suffering they're causing the competing humans, but I don't think that's true.

Tabris is a special case, as he's not even a normal Angel. The other Angels are probably a result of learning from past examples, or only incidentally learned of humanity.

Bardiel's strategy didn't really require knowledge about human psychology, just access to the Evangelion.

Arael was just using the oppurtunity to learn about humans, and didn't even seem all that hostile.

Armisael was outright trying to merge with Rei to ease her loneliness by her own admission. Whether Rei was an individual or a facet of a collective is really kind of irrelevant, but Rei being lonely herself made for better coercion.

Sachiel explicitly blinks dumbly and stares at the humans trying to attack it, swats at them a bit to get them out of the way, and keeps going. I think it's a safe assumption to think that a number of Angels don't really understand what's going on, especially given that most of them were only awake for a few hours when they show up.

NERV is basically killing babies one way or another.

Bardiel had no advantage, and did not strike, until Touji was aboard. It's possibly the rest of them were dumb as bricks but if that's the case I feel less sorry for them...

Bardiel was also not activated, and had no power source, until Touji was aboard.
