Humans can't become Shinigami. At least thats what seems to be thought. Yet the anime hints that it might be possible. It's rather confusing.

Either watch or read about the last episode of the anime.

 Its more than hinted. Its almost figured that when Light dies, he becomes a Shinigami. Remember what Light's Shinigami told Light involving the first human to have the Death Note? The Shinigami must be the one to kill the first human. And since those that have used the Death Note can neither go to Heaven nor Hell, it can be concluded that Light becomes one. Also, one line that Ryuk says is directed towards Light after he has already died. Its confusing yes, but read it over a few times and you can understand.

At least, I am pretty sure thats how it goes.

I'm aware of that. That's why I said maybe. It's up to debate about that though. And in the manga they says that definitely impossible.  In the manga it is stated that no humans go to heaven or hell at all because in the world of Death Note they don't exist. When humans die (which is inevitable) their minds and souls simply cease to exist. So it doesn't matter what they'd done. As Ryuk says "all humans are equal, in death"

Thats' from the manga though which at the very end is very different from the anime ending (blame the Light fangirls)

Only one thing I would do. That is to use when it is needed. whether I'm in the problem or not. I just use it when needed no where else.

Also if you watch episode 37 it says:
 When the user of the Death Note dies he/she goes to EU (Endless Abyss)
or something like that.

 That's anime only. In the manga it's revealed that it was a lie. In fact all human's go to nothingness when they die, wether they used a Death Note or not, whether they were good or bad in life. When you die, your mind simply ceases to exist anymore. "All humans, are equal in death"

But, with my last post-heck I don't know what I was thinking. All that highly smart-ass stuff that i'd do just doesn't seem like me too much. I'd do it eventually, maybe.

Well, i have one of those $5 Death Notes and it's my Physics/Programmation notebook at school XD So i would give it a similar use It doesn't run out of pages, after all...i guess o-o
But as of actual usage...I would actually take a similar path as Light's, using it to get rid of the people who in my eyes deserve to die, and start 'cleaning' the world slowly and becoming some sort of god of it. I'm just pretty much like Light...except i'm eviler and less smart as i would simply kill rather than plot alot of things >->
