Actually, you have to believe in how things work in the story's world (no pun intended) to enjoy it. Be it an MMO or a space fiction with green aliens. If nothings connects and nothing makes sense, you wouldn't enjoy it, because you can't understand any of it. If Kuhn were to come to you (you being Haseo in the game) and say "lol i'm aura u sux lolol" (in that exact wording), would that make ANY sense to what you know about .hack//verse?
Plot device or not. EVERYTHING in a story has to be believable, even if it's a purely fictional world.
Believing something and understanding it are two entirely different things, so your entire point is moot.
Um, no, they are both related to my point. You have to believe something is possible in X fiction's world. Understanding is a plus, of course.

Man, go ahead and make my in-game character die any day. Better than getting comatosed, I'd say.

Trust me, I'd say the same thing. Unfortunately, there are WOW players who would die before they lost their character.

Not in Japanese anime, manga, and games. Half the stuff is completely impossible, and everything else is merely improbable. Look at Dragonball Z. The Japanese don't seem to care about plot holes.
