Well, even if there's cliches, that's the only thing there is. The only way for something to be truly original is if it had nothing in it ever used before.

There's no possible way that Haseo could ever be Sora, I refuse to believe anything of that sort.

For all we know, it's Haseo's special power as the "Terror of Death" or something.
It wasn't Haseo, it was pretty much Ovan sacrificing himself. That shouldn't work unless all the other Epitaphs are destroyed, and that didn't happen. In fact, that's the only thing that would have needed to happen for the ending to make sense. Sure, Ovan's the one who made Cubia huge, but as Aura said the Epitaphs are all part of a whole, and you need to destroy the whole thing...
Hmm, I for one am 99% certain Haseo is Sora based on the name, age, and gender connection and the incredibly unlikely hurdle of complete memory loss having just been cleared... I should take bets or something, I bet I could raise this site's funding for an entire year...

Well... isn't Cubia, in GU, the antiexistance of Ovan's explosion?
Since Ovan is... non existant, I don't see a problem in beating up Cubia.

Can you explain this connection? If it hasn't been explained somewhere on this forum yet? Or a link to explain this connection?

The Epitaphs could just be badass like that and destroy Cubia from the sheer awesomeness of their power, who knows? Afterall, all eight of them, united, gives full omnipotence over the network. They might be able to get around the Anti-Existence rule.
As for all the connections between Sora and Haseo, it could be loads of things. Haseo and Sora being childhood friends, the Haseo and Sora name thing being a motif to support their connection via Skeith, or they could just totally be leading us on like when they tried to trick the audience into thinking the girl who went comatose and Aura were the same individual.

No, he's the shadow of the Epitaph Users. As I said earlier, they're all part of a whole. In fact, Ovan's "Rebirth" ability seems implied to not be able to work unless all the Epitaph Users are awakened. Ovan still existed, but was unconscious, and this prevented them from just destroying all the Epitaphs (more like "returning" them to the sea of data) as Aura suggested.

Haseo is another name for Basho, a famous poet. Sora says that his name comes from one of Basho's disciples.

Aura doesn't seem to think so. I'm pretty sure that anything they tried to do like that would just expand Cubia's power too. That's generally how it works... And it's not that easy anyway. If Ovan had to go through the trouble of killing his avatar just to destroy the AIDA, even though all the other users were awakened and willing to help, it doesn't seem like there's a chance in hell it would be
easier to beat Cubia. And Ovan seems to have researched this pretty well...

You mean when everyone thought Tsukasa was a boy in real life because his memories were altered and that's a pretty cruddy explanation? Yes, yes, this is exactly like that.

I've been thinking about this, and I've come up with an explanation which would explain Haseo's utter ignorance of The World and resolve the apparent contradiction with Unison, and which is less farfetched than several of the other plot devices in .hack. (It certainly beats "and then a miracle occurred", which is used not once but twice in CELL.)
At some point in Sora's ordeal with Skeith, his personality was split in two. The "Sora" persona, with all his memories related to The World, remained in the game, attached to his character. The "Ryou" persona returned to reality without those memories.
*The above is nothing more than speculation, but it's the best I've come up with so far.

Maybe that would explain Skeith's personality somewhat from when he and Haseo speak in vol.3 from what I hear.

Well then it was a Miracle. >_>

When was the second time?

I could work with this, I guess. I'm still gonna resist any Haseo = Sora connection until I'm convinced, though.

hahahaha....Imagine if he used three.......okay, okay, I´m too dirt-minded for now....
But if Haseo and Sora were the same person, that means it would be a kind personal psychological hentai, because he´s Sora, and Sora is him...
I think I´m saying nonsense...

All I have to say, is that if this is true I feel it cheapens Haseo's character.
Haseo is supposed to be a stranger to The World, to reveal that he not only was a character from the former series. But arguably one of the more important ones kind of kills his whole appearance as a new character.
The way I see it, Haseo is supposed to represent somebody who never saw or played the original series. G.U. is supposed to be accessible to people who didn't know or have the chance to experience Project .hack... so why would the main character be somebody who can only be fully understood through the previous series? It doesn't make sense to me.
Also... if it was something this important you'd think there would be more evidence for it inside of the game. The connection would be clear to people who'd never even heard of this book before. The Yata/Wiseman, Endrance/Elk, and Kuhn/Sieg connections are fairly easy to spot within the games. Why wouldn't a Sora/Haseo one be the same?

really, i don't know... but from what i can tell, that's what the memory loss plot loop is supposed to be... just a way to make him seem new... and even then, i don't think its all that important to the story. i don't think it cheapens his character in the least. i think it makes him deeper. we've watched a character that i particularly liked go from immature child to psychopathic teen ager, to finally one who is at peace... and it does explain his attachment to skeith. either way, its not canon important and is probably something they said, "we can add this in there... no one can repute it because we know whats true... just a treat for the fans... and if the new fans don't know who Sora is, then it doesn't really matter... if they want to know, more money for us." its probably just a marketing ploy to get those who want to know more to buy their merchandise...

Yeah, I agree. The main theme of G.U. is a kid growing up. From that perspective it works fine. Also, personality-wise, everyone except Yata is actually quite different, and even Yata seems pretty different at first, in a position of power... It's only obvious that Endrance is Elk because of all the Mia paraphernalia. If he was a non-Epitaph User obsessed with Gabi or something, and didn't look like Elk, it would have been much harder to draw the connection. "OMG CLINGY PERSON = ELK!1!" would have been met with "Stfu n00b, he talks about too deep and sophisticated things to be Elk, where do you even get this stuff from?" repeatedly on this board. Same with Kuhn, basically all we knew was about Sieg was that he was very competitive and wanted to be a legend. Gradually his emails convinced us, but his personality alone gave little away. Haseo (in Terror of Death mode) does seem to think that killing other players is a good solution to a problem, which does remind you of someone... Also, the Mia thing and Kuhn's emails, they couldn't have happened if they didn't have at least some memories, so it's hard to make a direct comparison.
