Origin of names

Post by The Valkyrie »

Apologize I do if this is an antiquated term of discussion.

Albireo: Related to eyes.
Aura: Related to an aura/ the elements gold and radium.
Elk: May be related to the word/name Erk. Maybe.
Mia: May relate to the abbrieiation for 'Missing In Action.
Sora: Related to legendary person.
Subaru: Cluster of stars.

KUUKAI EDIT: I had to reconstruct this post since Wander decided to chrono-troll it. It might be missing some parts...

The name comes from a binary star in the constellation Cygnus, where one star is blue and the other yellow.
Aura: Related to an aura/ the elements gold and radium.
Also Greek for "breeze".
Elk: May be related to the word/name Erk. Maybe.
More likely related to the deer.
Sora: Related to legendary person.
Kawai Sora, student of Matsuo Basho, who was considered the greatest haiku poet of all time. Sora was also considered to be a great poet in his own right.
Subaru: Cluster of stars.
The Pleiades.

Orca: Killer whale.

I'm out of time for now; I may be back later.

Bear: A bear
Natsume: Real name
Nuke Usagimaru: Ditto
Terajima Ryoko: Ditto
Wiseman: A.. wise...man. Or, more likely, singular of the Three Wise Men/Kings, or Magi. Maybe Magi got his name from that as well.

Or the more common name origin, "mine", in Italian I think.

Here's a few from the Epitaph of the Twilight

Aperion- The apeiron is a cosmological theory created by Anaximander in the 6th century BC.

Bith the black- In Irish mythology, Bith was a son of the Biblical Noah. His wife was Birren. Their daughter, Cessair, was denied a place in Noah's Ark, so she and her followers sailed to Ireland, landing only forty days before the Deluge.

Fili the white- Fili was class of poets in Ireland, up into the Renaissance, when the Irish class system was dismantled. It also means poet in Gaelic today.

Magus- A Magus (plural Magi, from Latin, via Greek μάγος ; Old English: Mage; from Old Persian maguš) was a member of the Magi tribe from ancient Media, (inhabitants of Persia), who were responsible for the religious and funerary practices.

Alba (Albas' lake boils)- Alba is the ancient and modern Gaelic name for the country of Scotland (also Alba in Irish, and in Old Gaelic Albu).

Fidchell- Fidchell (also called fidhcheall or fithchill) is a board game from Early Ireland which is often compared to, but distinct from, Chess.

Macha or Maha- In Irish mythology, Macha is a goddess linked with war, horses and kingship. She is said to have fed on the heads of the slain.

Tarvos- Tarvos is a moon of Saturn, it's name is Gaulish in origin.

Those are just a few I threw off the top of my head.

Enjoy!

In italian "Aura" is the light that you can see during the dawn...maybe there's a connection(At chapter 4 of the games the .hackers talk a lot of a possible "Epitaph of the dawn")[One thing:they talk of this possible epitaph in the italian version, but with the orrible italian traduction maybe in the american version there isn't]

Dawn = Twilight.
Twilight is the time before sunrise and after sunset when sunlight scattered in the upper atmosphere illuminates the lower atmosphere and the surface of the Earth.

Therefore "Epitaph of the Dawn" is "Epitaph of the Twilight", here's a link to it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epitaph_of_Twilight

Mis-translation I'm guessing.

BlackRose's name came from a dream she had of a girl with her own face, standing in a field of black roses, as mentioned at the very beginning of .hack//Another Birth.
Kite's name is written as かいと (hiragana) or カイト (katakana,) romanized "Kaito." His name may be connected to the word kaitou (怪盗 - かいとう), which means "mysterious (phantom) thief." The Twin Blade class is pretty much the thief class of The World. Because he cannot be deleted, one could think that he cannot essentially "die," and well... you can't kill a phantom. Kite could also be considered even more of a thief because of the Bracelet, which takes data from others and changes it. :'D

Aura (though not personally in the new age but studied it) refers to a persons soul. this was my first impresson of her when i watched SIGN because of the light around her body. an acronym for the 'Soul' of The World
oh and Kite... like the one in the wind probably his favorite toy next to videogames aparantly ^^

I believe Kamui is literally translated to "Hand of God," but I guess Power of God works fine.

How do you figure? It doesn't allow you to do more damage by sneaking up on the enemy, and you can't really steal in the game.

Kazu = Kazoo was an alien in The Flintstones, who had the ability to grant wishes, kind of like a genie.
