Blasphemy! American music is great! The good ol' USA gave birth to and perfected ROCK! Some of the best bands of all time like Led Zepplin, Aerosmith, Boston, Kansas, REO Speedwagon, George Thorogood, Van Halen, ZZ Top, and Lynard Skynard were made great in America!

I don't know about the rest of ya'll, but the USA deffinitely knows how to ROCK!!! :supz:

I would say at least 90% of all North American mainstream music is terrible. I've found that everything played on VH1, BET, and MTV is absolutely awful and to be honest, I'm amazed people consider most of that stuff music. The bands that claim to be punk are sellouts, the rappers wouldn't know music if it kicked them in the butt, and all the glossy-sugar-coated pop stars inbetween are as dumb as a rock. Music doesn't carry a message anymore in North America and most of it is just a corporate-written script to appease it's listeners for the time being so that they can boost their ratings and make more money. It's kind of funny how the MTV crowd preaches that old people are "out of touch" or "uncool," yet it's old CEOs who are telling them what is cool and projecting it onto their networks and radio stations. Do you really think someone like 50-Cent or Britney Spears became popular on their own with the crap they're spewing?

All music has become now is finding something mindless that will become popular and milking it for all it's worth.

I don't know if Europe and Asia are the same way. I don't know their media well enough to make that kind of a claim. But I do know North American media and that's how I feel about it.

Homer Simson said it all:

"Why do we need new music anyway? Everyone knows that ROCK was perfected in 1984."

If you're talking about American mainsteam, yes. If you're talking about American underground, no. You have to look for the real gems.

And don't be so closed-minded about rap, Haseo, regardless of your preference.

I can't believe that rapper guy is still on "Dancing with the Stars" he is the WORST ballroom dancer I have ever seen!!!! I mostly hate american music, mostly stuff like Gwen Stefani's holler... whatever the crap it's called it's just plain retarded, and that Black-eyed peas "lady lumps" song, which is hardly a song, simply a sellout to sex meant to make guys "happy" so they'll buy the crap. I especially hate Hillary Duff...

She was going to have a concert in the city I live in a few months ago, I already hated her, (she has zero talent) but I knew several families that were taking their kids to see it. the week the concert was to be held, she cancels with the excuse that it didn't sell enough tickets. Way to crush the dreams of dozens of 10 year-olds Hillary! I mean c'mon, it's not that big of a city to begin with, of course you're not going to have as big a turnout as L.A. or New York! M.O.V.E. (a Japanese band) didn't turn down a concert for the Anime USA convetion in Northern V.A. just because there weren't that many people, they played all the same like true musicians and they ROCKED!!!!

So I mostly listen to music from video games or anime, as well as classical. I extremely dislike pop, rap, and emo.
techno iz dah 1337!!

I wouldn't call the first three rock...

Hollaback Girl isn't the best song, I agree. But people msotly listen to it for the BANANAS. :D And My Humps isn't the best song lyric wise, it, like a lot of other popular songs (even J-music), are mostly liked for their rhythm/sound. I don't understand hardly a word of J-music but yet I sitll like it just for how it sounds.

Me, I'm a fan of almost anything that isn't hardcore, screamo, 90% of country music (I do like one or two..), opera, or a good bit of classical. I do like ska, some classical, some intrumental, techno/electronica/trance/rave, rock, pop, hip-hop, indies, J-music, etc...

But I guess to answer the original question, no, not all American music is crap. Stop listening to a lot mainstream stuff as someone said.

Okay ladies & ladies, here's my take on this,

Music is the universal language, it should not matter what genre it is, who is singing it, or where its from. All that matters is if you can feel it's spirit, and this can be applied to nearly all music.

So there you have it.

Well, American Rock&Roll in general is still good. In my opinion, most of the rap, and R&B is junk. Although it is possible to still find a few gems in those genres.

Story of the Year, Jimmy Eat World, Taking Back Sunday, Chronic Future, The Beastie Boys, Gorillaz, Utada Hikaru (while she is more popular in Japan, she was born in New York, New York, USA), Guns N' Roses, Bon Jovi, Lead Zeppelin, etc. Those are just a few of the American bands that I like. And as I pointed out, yes, I do consider Utada Hikaru to be American music since she is American.

Dosn't really work on feeling the spirit if its all talking about Sex or Drugs like most music dose.

While the majority of American music is crap (definitely talking mainstream) there is actually some pretty good music out there. It's the kinda music you would probably have to hear from someone else to know it actually exists. Another thing is that people watch channels like MTV and BET and they think those are the only music out there. Rap is a totally different subject entirely because it's become all about being the baddest person nowadays as opposed to when it first started and it was done to make a statement. There does exist some good rap out there though that doesn't just talk about girls, money, drugs, and all that crap. It's extremely hard to find though so good luck to ya. Being a musician I'm a pretty open minded person so there's not alot of music that I dislike per say. Like Maromi said just in different words the majority of good music is the underground stuff.

Uhh 70s music is where most all our rock comes from and 80s DISCO???? What? What? What? lol dude 80s was when grundge rock and power rock started...

the retro or disco was more 60s to mid 70s, and at the end of 70s rock started to kick off and got all the way to the 90s where the popular thing is rap.

Mostly the pop is rap in America, but rock is pretty far up there even though is usually crap there are a few good bands...

me i like teh old school rock bands of late 70s early 80s.
