Where is this placed?

I am curious about the development of this game. I am just confused as to where in the timeline it takes place. Is it after Quarentine and before Dusk or is it simple after Dusk? I never finished watching the Dusk series or mangas, so I'm not sure what happens there.

It takes place three years after the end of Dusk and seven years after the end of Quarantine.

So then the Kite look-a-like in GU might not be the original from the .hack games, but instead Shugo, from Dusk. Would that be plausible?

I was under the impression that we knew it takes place three years after Udeden, but when exactly the games took place is unknown. Udeden takes place in 2014, G.U. in 2017, and the games take place in "200X". Unless I'm missing something in a G.U. article or some obscure info source, all I know is that the games happen sometime between 2007 and the end of 2009...

I highly, highly, highly, highly doubt it is Shugo if the Phases are also involved somehow. Also, Tri-Edge's Bracelet would be a lugnut. It's definatelly connected to Kite.

Somebody should draw Shugo-Edge though... He'd be missing random teeth, two feet tall (his weapons would be about as big as him, and he'd fall over when they "open"), have the same constipated expression, and yeah, have a lugnut on his arm. He wouldn't even get azure flame, more like indigo. If I ran into him in a dungeon, I'd probably die laughing. ...And never return.

Just a thought, I mean, it kind of makes sense since the player who played Kite quit, along with two others, and made that super rad PC that was godly. (I think it was in the epiloge that they revealed this.)

It actually doesn't say "-2010" in the Japanese version of the games, so it wasn't too obvious to me (^^; ), but apparently it happens in 2010 anyway. All the things that happen during the games happen during 2010 according to Analysis. I could have sworn I read "200X" somewhere though... Don't think it was a roman numeral, even Analysis uses the notation "201X" at one point...
Out of curiousity, where in the manga do they say "four years"? I have it in Japanese, just haven't read it yet, but I'd like to check...

I don't remember exactly what that source was, but I think "200X" may have been referring to the events of SIGN. Other sources (again, I don't have them on hand at this moment, so I'm not sure which) do pinpoint the games in 2010. Some of those sources also put the beginning of SIGN in 2010, which is patently absurd given the duration of SIGN (approx. 6 months), the duration of the games (several months), and the time between them (half a year). Even "official" timelines need to be taken with a grain of salt.

How i interpreted the time line was

2007(Sign)->2010(Game)->2014(Udeden)->2017(G.U.)

What Rei says is true, there's only a period of six months between SIGN and the four games from what I gathered.

so the timeline would be:

2010 > 2014 > 2017

The events of SIGN and the games are closely connected and happened within the same time period.
