Just finished .hack//Infection

Post by FioKupo »

Hey all! New poster here.

After binging a bunch of Tales of games, I decided to give .hack a try (my brother LOVES the animes so I figured I'd try out the games. I really enjoyed myself! The gameplay was pretty simple (besides the final boss. Oh boy did I struggle for a bit) but still enjoyable. After coming off nine Tales of games, it was nice having a game where I can kind of turn my brain off while grinding levels and catch up with whatever series I'm watching at the moment.

The story and characters were delightful. I really loved Kite and I'm super interested in continuing on to //Mutation. I think I'm going to play my next Tales of game instead. Gotta have some time to let everything set in and so that I can properly digest the story.

A short question though: how did you guys feel about //Infection?

I hope you enjoy it!!!

I'm about 7 hours in. I'm a big fan of the character designs, gameplay, and plot. Just good vibes all around. To be honest, I wasn't expecting anyone to be active on this forum, lol. Just trying to relive aspects of my childhood, I guess. The discord is much more active...

Maybe I will! I'm honestly surprised there's no one posting here, considering y'all get 3-5 new members a month.

Most of them end up being spambots that I remove and ban. Though be hard to say the remaining 3-5 are real people or spambots that have a delay posting scheduled.

Lol there's been a lot of posts + replies within the past few days. I'm wondering, what was this forum like, say, 10, 20 years ago? I'd assume that it'd be a lot more active, since .Hack would've still been popular.

The dothackers.net forum started on Sat Aug 09, 2003.

.hack was released in Japan in 2002. With the manga releasing in January 2002 as chapters in a magazine before the books, the anime in April 2002, and the game in June 2002.

Later it was localized in the US in 2003. With the anime airing in February 2003 on Toonami, game releasing in February 2003, and the manga in September 2003.

Wow that's pretty neat!! I've never really posted on a forum before (I just kind of lurked on forum posts when I was a kid), but it's something I've been interested in for a while. Figured this would be an appropriate place to start. x3

Time really flies huh? The world and online technology felt so different back then, dotHack really added to the magic of that time period. It and the Megaman BattleNetwork series molded my little brain and gave me a very hopeful and bright-eyed view on online communications. Funny enough I didn't get to play infection until after mutation back in the day. But I remembered being amazed by the fictional social systems of having to wait for an NPC to be "online", checking the ingame forums (just like checking dothackers :P), building up your relationship with your party members. I think that's the part that endeared me to dotHack very early on. That plus the aesthetics of The World that gave me that same feeling of virtual mystery that World of Warcraft gave me when it came out soon after: There's this big shared virtual world and there's stuff you just don't know about waiting to be found. I remember especially with mutation and the theories around the castle in the sky, the giant floating in the sky, the glitch zones. Those things really captured the imagination of 12 year old Airon.

And of course the time I spent on this and other servers also heightened those feelings. It's fun to come back to some of my posts from... almost 20 years ago and see how much I 've changed and yet stayed the same. I wonder what these old familiar names are doing these days, thinking about the real person on the otherside of the screen. The old conversations we shared, the favourited characters and moments, the personal stories.

Thank you for the nostalgic forum post!
