Can't they remake .hack//g.u with online capabilities.

Post by TwinbladeKitex »

Well I thought maybe instead of playing Haseo, we would create our own character. We would experience the opening storyline like in every rpg and be left to play the game with people online or npcs. Or we could create a character and be helping out Haseo since it would be neat..like randomly receiving mail from Haseo asking us to help him in a dungeon after reaching a certain level. Like if you finish the main quests..you can do whatever you want like events. It's just a thought. Playing a side character and supporting Haseo while being online. Group quests and everything..escort. Or just be the main character and invite people only to help you with bosses in dungeons. Creating an Avatar is eh..maybe take that out of the game or leave it for main storyline progress. Would be cool if we could edit our own avatar and gear him up to change his looks.

The last time they did something like that was .hack//Fragment. The online service only lasted for around a year (though that's kinda what they intended in the first place). Even when they realized how popular it was, that only gave them enough incentive to extend the period for up to two months.

Moot point anyway. Unless .hack's popularity increases exponentially for whatever reason, we'll be lucky to get a new game at all, much less one with online service.

Can they? In terms of capability and having all the necessary tools to do so, probably. They would have to change ALOT of things though...G.U. wasn't meant for online playability at all; all classes but Adept Rogues are severly underdeveloped, the Skill Trigger function is way too broken, there are so many features that could be exploited to make battles too cheap and boring, several features regarding areas and dungeons aren't meant for several players to be there at once, etc etc. But sure, they could keep the engine, the basic features of the game, and do a whole revamp of all other features and areas to allow online gaming,

Will they? Sadly, most definetly no. First of all reasons, the .Hack series seems to be over and no more games will ever be released; CC2 and all developers will now focus on other projects with low to null chance to coming back at .Hack (sure, it seems they'll use .Hack ideas for future games, but that's different and they won't even be called ".Hack" anymore). And .Hack has never reached an enough level of popularity that would motivate such a long, expensive project. Simply remaking the game would take alot of effort; adding online features and all that would be almost like making a new game. And it would be all for a game that only a certain fraction of the .Hack fandom (which is way to small already) would play. Let's not forget that as much as a gaming company loves their fans and would love to create such a game with perfect ideas, they're still a business and they can't afford to spend so much money and resources for something that won't give them any profit.

So, unless...
  • They suddenly get hugenourmous rich that they can make such a profit-less game
  • .Hack suddenly gets as much fans as Assassin's Creed or Call of Duty that would play such game
  • An independent group of at least 20 excellent programmers/designers/developers decide to do such project on their own
Don't get your hopes up about such a game ever existing D: And not only for a G.U. online game, but any .Hack with online capabilities overall.

Creating online GU is not a very good Idea, BUT creating FORCE:ERA based online game might be different story.
I've looked into dothack wikia, and it's system is quite interesting. At least, it fulfill standard Asian Online Games.
Multi branched Job, expansive Map, cool guild system (I heard you can get Air Ship? cool~) Oh addition, Maybe GU Guild system can be applied too.

But then again, as an idea, it's fascinating. The realization chance is near zero. But, if it does become FORCE:ERA online, it might at least lasts 3-5 years before crowd gets bored. More if they keep updated with interesting stuffs. Less if the game bugged severly, even less if security system can't handle cheater. (According to my own research on Online Game in Indonesia though)

GU never meant to be exact online games... Should I made clear that each Gott Statue--Pardon me, Beast Statue, only have one item? At least in IMOQ they had three to share to each member of party.
Plus, PK system. I can see trolls are coming, waiting for you in front of Portal.
And the repeatedly used maps, all of them have 'ordinary' feature (No meatwall dungeon, meh :P)
The combat system using fence is, while effective to prevent kill-steal, not very fun. The combat system is burden to those with slower net connection (like us, the third world player!)

Ooooh, I have few ideas to make .hack as famous as assassin's creed or call of duty. One of it is to make dual subtitle choice, japanese and english. :D

Ah, maybe we just need to make some fan games :D

I can't let go of the series and I won't. Ever. But there's little hope for any more .hack games...

Actually, it doesn't even prevent kill-steal at all; they're just meant to give borders to the battle area instead of fighting over the entire field, but anyone can easily walk inside and take part in the battle. What about when Haseo walks into a Battle Area to "help" a player by defeating all the monsters they're facing, isn't that technically kill-steal? Because screw needing help, that Syake is at full health and she is entirely capable of kicking my ass in the Arena, i'm sure she can deal with a couple of lv30 goblins on her own >_> lol
But yeah, everything you say is correct :P G.U. wasn't meant for an online playability at all...in fact, it might work better as a Co-Op, but even so, there's still alot of stuff that would have to be fixed and implemented.

And i've read several details regarding FORCE:ERA...And wow, they have such a HUGE AND COMPLEX class system, the best and most complete i've ever seen in all of .Hack D8 And it'll be a BIG SHAME if they don't give any use to such system...i mean, all that can work as a perfect basis for an Online/MMO game. And yet, it seems Versus will be the last .Hack game they'll ever release, completely discarding all those details about FORCE:ERA and just giving it to you so you can fall into depression by thinking about all the epic work they could've done, if they have had enough resources and motivation to work in such a game D;
It would be AWESOME to have a FORCE:ERA-based game, and much more fitting for an Online game that any other version of The World...but still, my last 3 points still apply, and unless any of them are successfully obtained, you can forget any hopes about seeing any other .Hack game, FORCE:ERA game included D:

You'll need more more than just that to reach such an enormous popularity :P Dual subtitle would make it more accessible to people and without having to worry about localizations, but still, that wouldn't attract so much people to play them. The main reason why no one plays .Hack it's because you need all games to properly enjoy the story, and no common person would spend 4 times the money to play a game while they can easily buy another one and enjoy it better. That, and the story is WAY TOO COMPLEX to understand, to the point of boring to the average AC/CoD player (AC's story is EXTREMELY COMPLEX too...but you just can ignore that and go on with the fun stuff, though i hate it when people do that but whatever), and the gameplay isn't the most interesting or difficult one...it's so easy to finish a GU game in less than 10 hours, and the post-game stuff isn't too great to spend alot of time on it either (though i spent over 200 hours in Rebirth...but that's just me XD). To gain popularity on .Hack, to make all those snobby rich kids buy the game, you would have to change all those details i mentioned...but honestly, i would rather have my poor, unknown game the way it is, than change it all just so it becomes popular D:

This, is one of major wasted great idea oh .hack history. If only... If only CC2 use another char on Sora, instead of orange clad--teal haired twin blade boy, .hack//Movie may have more respect to attracts more viewers. More viewers = more money.
(heck, need more alteration on her PC; change dual knives into single dagger, even greener hair, more brownish than orange-ish outfit, etc... meh, maybe CC2 have their own reasons... but still...)

maybe someday, Sorrow... someday...

dual subtitle can save up a lot of budget~ and they don't have to handle fans screaming localization demands anymore~

About the story... Let's leave the story the way .hack was. The only parts we need to change are gameplay. .hack can sucks big time when it comes to gameplay, unfortunately -_-a.

I remember posting something about the dream I had (but it got deleted for some reasone ^^;)... it's about Kite IMOQ dungeon-crawling but using Versus fighting style. So he can beating enemies, jumping, slashing, firing mini data drain every time without long sequence. Dungeon crawling + Versus playstyle, cool, no? :3 (imagine if his party met goblin mobs, or meeting PK? XD)

Story event map is fixed area, like normal map instead of randomly generated one (CMIW).
Chaos Gate only for dungeon crawling, for more powerful enemies, more rewards, and more challenge :D (Like Battle Dungeon in RF Online)

More interaction with your party members. Not just sending cards, replying emails, etc. Example... If you play as Tokio, bringing Tsukasa and Subaru will make you outzoned in 'free chat'. If you bring Kite and Haseo, it will give you awkward atmosphere. If you bring Helba and Zelkova... well XD
Sometimes, right combination of party members and circumstance result mini event.
More variation of gift items. Like Atoli will appreciates you more if you give her cute little bird toy instead of rose flower.

also... GIFT system! How can we forget this? Raising affection meter can be painful sometime. So why not dip into relaxing onsen, let everyone interact, ans slowing raising their points? >w<
Quest! We can never get enough (well, not really OwO)
Guild wars using RTS seems interesting too :D
More addition, you can cook with grunty food! How cool is that?? XD

Every little trivial features can add gaming experience. In Llink, i wish to see more real time interaction of each .hack hero from different eras C:

Those ideas, of course, not all of it can used as online reference :D

G.U. didn't have a dual language option because there wasn't enough space left on the disks to have two separate voice tracks. Even the original four games needed to sacrifice Parody Mode to have a dual-language option. The localizers don't just arbitrarily decide whether to keep the original Japanese track or not. There are a multitude of factors involved.

If .hack were to exists online it should have a setting built for just that. Revisiting R:2 is nice but is another Fragment that fun? An additional reason there isn't a remake of G.U. is that .hack is already past Revision 2 and we wouldn't get much of a graphical improvement. In the meantime may I suggest Guilty Dragon? Also weren't elemental hits and videos added to the gameplay for international versions.

Nope. Although there are some other updates to the first series engine, like first-person with movement, that the U.S. got in earlier games like Infection, because it got the engine used in the Japanese version of Outbreak shipping around the same time. This is reflected in The World's version number in-game.

Although an official .hack MMO would be nice I don't think it will happen. The main reason why is because .hack has probably become a risk in the eyes of the executives, or the people who green light games, of Namco Bandai in recent years. The .hack series has consistently trailed behind the Naruto Ultimate Ninja series, and Cyber Connect has been branching out to other publishers to make their games. It is most likely that Naruto Ultimate Ninja will eventually be the only IP that Cyber Connect will work on with Namco Bandai in the future, and they will go to Capcom or another publisher for their other new IPs. I'm not too sure about how great their ventures away from the umbrella of Namco Bandai will be but I'm glad they are moving on from a publisher that will rarely green light anything for localization that doesn't have "Naruto" in the title. This does mean that an MMO which is influence by .hack can probably be released, but only time will tell.

Now on to the idea of remaking G.U. with online capabilities. I'm not really for this because G.U. wasn't my cup of tea, so to speak. The mechanics were less appealing to me than the original series and the button mashing combat got dull very quick. My main problem with G.U. is the fact that it was really streamlined by comparison to the original games. I liked the fact that the armor and weapons that you equipped in the original games affected your strengths and weaknesses to certain elements and what kinds of attacks you could use. There were only a few special attacks as well that could easily be thrown to the wayside by the latest and greatest one. The list could go on about why G.U. wouldn't do as great as the original games would if it was converted to an MMO, but that doesn't mean it couldn't be converted into an MMO. Though I cannot say the same for .hack//Link, no one is going to want to play and MMO with .hack//Link's combat system.

A .hack// game with online capabilities would be pretty awesome. But i would even settle for an expansion for the GU games. New Items, new Armor, new Weapons,New Monsters, and being able to recruit Ovan,Sophora,Hiiragi,Sakaki,Negimaru,Grein,Iyoten,Asta,Gabi,Sirius,Taihaku, and even Roots characters like Sakisaka and Sabouru. Jack up the level cap to 250, give the Lumina Cloth chaos gate an Area Word Function for levels 150-200, and have the later levels in either a new town or through Netslum Tartarga. It'd be an opportunity to add Balbol Museam and Al Fadel. Add a few flashy things like Epitaph User Armors to upgrade with Virus Cores or something, and you'd have a pretty nifty expansion. I wouldn't even mind if it would be cannon or not. GU were by far the best games i've ever played. It'd be do-able, if they'd re-release the games over PSN and offer the expansion kinda like a DLC.

I know this is an old thread and I am posting from my phone, so bear with me....

I have no idea if this board is even active anymore, but I would like to add that it is "possible" to play Fragment still. A friend of mine and myself are setting up private servers that we're going to make public when there ready.

Yes, we are, and for some of us who are active in the dothackers Skype chat, we've been following the progress thanks to Coldbird giving us updates from time to time. I also follow the Facebook page dedicated to it, which is constantly updated as well.

But i have to say, there hasn't been much interest in this Fragment project D: Or rather, the remaining .Hack fanbase is EXTREMELY small at this point, and there hasn't been much of an increase since the project was pubicly announced. Sure, the few who remain are seriously overexcited about this, but their number is way smaller than those who were interested about, let's say, 2-3 years ago. Case in point, i would've LOVED a Fragment online 3 years ago and i'd have DEFINETLY played it for long...but now, even though i was also very excited when i first heard of it, i haven't had the time to even test it once D: I'm not saying that the project is too late and it's not worth it anymore, it's still a WONDERFUL project and i admire all the time and effort the entire team has put into it. But, the interest on it has been decreasing drastically, and it's not really going up even by saying that it'll be in 100% English and with entire public servers D:

And this doesn't help solve the question about remaing GU with online capabilities 'XD
I still think a REALLY good game based on the FORCE:ERA and with full MMO capabilities would be the best thing to do to revive the series, or even give it a whole new life.

Before that happens, we still need a SHITLOAD of information regarding the FORCE:ERA. Not just the crazy-ass class system. Hell we've only seen the FORCE:ERA in the Movie and not even much of that.

And as I've said before, among the plethora of complications with GU if they were to make it an actual online game, it would have to be made without the blatant one sided-ness.
