Burst Angel

Post by Erranty »

I just watched it and felt like I wasted my time. They failed to have an actual main character, instead opting to use a group of women you can't sympathize with in any way. The first episode brought in a male "main" character that turned into a background character, and he was such a weakling the women could've beaten his ass.

I dunno, there were some real problems.

1. Vague, if even existent plot.  Something about human weapons, mutant brains, and an evil plot to clean up the streets of Tokyo.

2. Inconsistent artwork. The girls had inconsistent boob sizes, which were drastically more interesting than their personalities.

3. The horrid voice acting. At some point they go to Osaka for more filler, and all the residents have fake Wild West accents. Every line in the show is an emotionless, cheesy, overused line from some other show.

4. The character costumes are ridiculous. Why would a teenage orphan girl from New York City dress like a slutty cowgirl while living in Japan with a mercenary group?

5. Wasted attempts at fan service... I don't even need to go there.

6. Characters constantly made choices and did things that contradict the way they're set up.

7. Constantly reused clips from previous episodes or even the same episode, and they're always WAY too long. Basically just filling in empty time while cutting production costs.

I really don't have anything good to say about it. I'm not sure if I failed to understand some sub-plot, but it didn't even seem like one was there.

I liked Burst Angel ;/
I'm not a good critic of anime at all though...for example, i didn't pay attention to stuff like the artwork, the "fake" accents, the contradictions or the re-used scenes...even though i did find it cheesy, and somewhat ridiculous at points, but i enjoyed watching it and considered it as a good anime to pass my time on. Not something i'd watch again (i hardly rewatch anime except for special honorable mentions, and even so...i've never re-watched SIGN, for example), but it's something i don't regret watching either.

Well, I guess it might not be fair comparing it to other stuff. But if I listed off what I though was good anime you might see a trend that I don't.

Ghost in the Shell
Big O
Cowboy Bebop
Outlaw Star
Durarara!!
Spice and Wolf (I just watched the 1st season)
Toradora!
Bakemonogatari
FLCL
Both Fullmetal Alchemist series.
Gundam Wing
Mai-Hime (not Mai-Otome though)
Golden Boy
RahXephon
Oreimo (Ore no Imouto)
Panty & Stocking
Higurashi: When they Cry
Samurai Champloo

But I mean, with all those there's a bit of closure, the characters don't contradict themselves, and there's actually a well laid out plot.

Take the end of Burst Angel for example  Jo goes to RAPT headquarters to do what? Kill a bunch of mechs along the way, then fire 1 bullet at a brain and blow herself up... Even though Sae was injured, she was able to point to the big brain anyway, why couldn't she shoot it exactly? And lets not forget that up until then Jo never felt she owed Sae anything!

And then, how did Meg walk miles from the beach to the heart of the city, after a nuclear explosion, WHILE they were under martial law? Not to mention that somehow Jo's scarf survived the blast yet Jengo didn't!

I dunno, its just annoying to me. They made an anime using a cheesy Wild West theme, in Japan, with girls as the main characters, forgot to give it a solid plot, and they basically take away everyone but the girl who always gets captured by the bad guy. Its like having the Scooby Doo gang get killed off till only Daphne is left, then having her still go off and solve mysteries!
