I think the largest resolution for a wallpaper image is 2560 x 1920...which is freaking huge and your icons would look like little colorful boxes. Normal average resolution sizes are 1024 x 768, 1200 x 800, and 1280 x 1024, so wallpapers of that size fit best for any average computer.

The current largest resolution for a computer is 4000x3000. And there are a bunch of cameras that take pics that size, but not in very high detail.
