Why do you think fans call OAV's OVA?

Post by Haseo-Skaith »

One thing I've been noticing lately with the Anime fanbase is that they keep getting the anacranim OAV wrong and spell it as OVA.

For those that don't know OAV stands for Original Artist Version. Its a term mostly used to describe an anime's pilot searies or movie. Usually they have things that the writer/artist imagined for the series that sometimes get cut out when they actually go into production.

Anyways the artists always call them OAV. Production Companies always call them OAV. But for some unknown reason fans call them OVA. What do you think?

Maybe a few years ago. But recently it seems like the publishers have finally settled on calling them OAV's.

I thought it was OVA for original video animation. As in it won't be aired on tv, but its not quite movie length either. I don't know where orginal artists version came from cause the majority of OVA's I've seen aren't pilot eps or remakes and anime movies are called what they are..movies.

Wikipedia wrote:Original Video Animation (オリジナル・ヴィデオ・アニメーション, Orijinaru Video Animēshon?), abbreviated OVA (オーヴィエー, ōviē?), is a term used for anime titles that are released direct-to-video, without prior showings on TV or in theaters. OVA titles were originally available on VHS, though they later became available on other media such as Laserdisc and DVD. OVA is sometimes used to refer to any short anime series or special regardless of its release format.

Originally, the similar initialism OAV (which stands for "Original Animated Video") was commonly used in place of OVA, and the meaning is accepted to be the same. According to source[1] the abbreviation OAV was too similar to AV ("Adult Video"), causing OAV to be misinterpreted as original adult video, resulting in a shift towards the OVA abbreviation. As of 2006, the expression OAV is rarely used in Japan, except in Animedia, a monthly magazine published by Gakken.

Everybody knows that Wikipidia is edited by its users. So there's no way that can be correct since its influenced by fans and not by official sources.

Also, Wikipedia is more regulated than people lead you to believe. It's not like you can just piss on articles. There's bots, administrators, etcetera monitoring almost every edit. And frankly, all three articles (OVA, OAV, Anime) are in agreement on the subject. U LUZ K THX.

The main flaw with your theory is that there are alot of stand alone OVA's that are their own series. How can it have an "original artists version" if there is only one version.
