Well it was a better alternative to displaying the ending. For me anyways, I prefer the movies rather than listening to Shinji question himself.

Its hard to tell.
Shinji from Evangelion does not think anything about his life and thus, does not care if he lives or dies.
Tsukasa from .hack//SIGN Did not want to die but he does have the whole Morganna hacking into her biran and changing the one fact yo always knew about your self.
But Shinji wins because a little gander problem that holds nothing to your farther sending you to fight monsters and showing some massed up clone monster more love then you have seen in your whole life.
Then again, Shinji is just the depressed type that can't get anything while Tsukasa your wondering what the hell happened to that kid since we're getting small pages and shreds of memories.
Shinji=Not really complicated as much as bad luck and messed up
Tsukasa=I could see more potential for complications ( Shinji may have had a gay moment but Tsukasa..well you know, genders)
Also Tsukasa has more scenes that are weird, like when he was tortured on the bed and then DD'd, ripped open a hole in the teddy bear that looked liked a rape scene or something...
Shinji just got depressed...not much of an issue there as just...nobody likes him XD
