personally i go with dot hack for a wide range of reasons. Namely because from what ive seen of the game, FF7 is decent and certainly not as good as others may think. So due to that the game...well i just have no interest and that interest declines the more i hear about it. And the fact that some annoying guy put the final nail in the ff7 coffin for me when he says stuff like "dont call me by my real name, either call me cloud or sephiroth" and all kinds of things where he wants to be called either of the two. Its funny because the before all the overhyping of FF7, i actually wanted to play the game since a friend of mine had it. But after the hyping and the noob comments i just gave up on the series altogether (ff7, not the entire ff series, since there are a lot of good games, like the previous 6) Oh and the fact that they made a movie: FF7 advent children. I was like wtf? and if its not bad enough that whenever i go to franks (otherwise known as Frank & Sons, which is a collectors market, that sells a bunch of anime, sports tgc stuff etc.) majority of booths i see were playing that movie, and so i got tired of seeing it which made me not like it even more. Incidentally and Ironically, my dad came home with a limited edition copy of the movie, since he works for the company that makes stuff like that. and i think to myself, "is this some kind of joke?" well its fine since my dad got it since im into games and anime and stuff, so kinda my fault for not telling him about me not liking ff7. All in all im just sick of the concept of ff7 altogether. id much rather play FFx2 XD (btw im well aware of the consequences for that last comment, but hey its funny to me lol)

better yet, while were on the subject id play GU over either. Well its not too hard to figure out why. I just like the series a lot more. That and its not overhyped to be the end all-be all of games (though imo it sort of is for me) and if it were to be overhyped, well it would be a different story because ive at least played the game, and i liked it a lot. But unlike some formentioned fanboys im not gonna run around forcing people to call me haseo or triedge or even piros the 3rd for that matter. But thats kind of besides the point. And what i like about .hack, is that well first off the main character is bad freakin ass. Im not really gonna mention that i like the GU's graphics though, since one, the games were made at different times, and two, graphics are irrelevant compared to characters, story, gameplay, music and so forth (which i like about the GU and the previous .hack games). Graphics are nice and everything but if a game were to have the best graphics possible, but have little or no story then i couldnt play it, but once again thats a little off topic.

in a nutshell to this post thats my opinion: .Hack//GU > FF7

on a final note, in case theres any FF7 crazed fans, take the time to note the word "opinion", everyone is entitled to one, and im just stating mine that i simply dont care for FF7 at all. So lets not go about flaming me for speaking my mind, not that i think anyone here is like that, im just taking a precaution.

oh and on a last side note, sephiroth isnt much of a villain. so he killed arieth or w/e her name was, thats not evil. And yes kefka IS more evil than sephiroth, due to his personality and list of accomplishments i guess you could say. (sorry i just had to bring that up since i was talking to someone a while ago, who said that sephiroth was the most evil person and stuff like that, it still gets on my nerves to hear that sometimes, honestly theres other FF games, try playing those.)

Oh come on! It was an interactive music video. X-2 wasn't -that- bad. The battle system was pretty good.. right?

But as for the thread.. I choose .hack over Final Fantasy VII because I have more fun playing the .hack series. I -hate- random battles with a burning passion. Well.. hate is a strong word.. some games that have random battles are pretty good.

was this question directed towards me?

well i played a bit at a friends house but only for a few minutes, and now that i think about it i played a demo that i had as well. which was enough to catch my interest, its basically the overhyping that killed it for me. thats just how it is with me, the more i hear about things i have little to no knowledge of i just lose interest. that and id rather fight the current, since i hate doing something because other people, in this case play ff7 and overrate/overhype it. i had little interest in the game but yeah that interest went a way and got buried.

as far as FFX2 goes, havent played it not sure if i want to since im not really to big on FF these days except for a few games. for one, even though some dont include it as FF, Crystal Cronicles is also a fav FF game of mine (idc it says Final Fantasy so its an FF game >.<). Oh and i also play FFXI, like i said its still an FF game. moreover im generally a fan of the original nes/snes titles. FF6 being the first one i played. after that i went on to check out the previous games, well in rom form anyway. lol i actually did that with the Phantasy Star series, after playing PSO, i borrowed the PS collection from a friend of mine, but i never got to beat the game so now i gotta hunt down a copy. but thats beside the point.

now that i think about it, do most people who glorify ff7 even try to play the games prior to it, or do they just assume that its just the best FF game ever?

I played the 8th 9th and 10th. But .hack has something FF doesn't have before: the freestyle battle... not in order

But you make a claim that FFVII "...is decent and certainly not as good as others may think..." but you haven't even played it. You simply can't make these claims. The problem I have with people who bash FFVII for being over-hyped, over-rated, and over-[insert word] is that they base their opinion on the game on the fact that it's adored, widely recognized, and received a lot of hype. You can't fairly judge a game like that.

Just because .hack isn't over-hyped by those outside of this community doesn't automatically make it a better game. I hate when people bash a game just because it's received a certain degree of hype or popularity. I don't care how much the hype pisses you off; if you haven't played it, you shouldn't be making such strong claims. Everyone has his/her own opinion, yeah, but the whole over-rated and over-hyped argument is so, so silly. Play it for what it is, not what you hear it is.

I don't think FFVII is the most amazing form of digital media ever, since I am a big fan of VI and have a hard time deciding which I like more, but I do think it deserves some of its fame. Not saying anyone has, but I also don't think you should dislike VII because of its recent spin-offs. I hate the FFVII Compilation with a burning passion, but I still appreciate the original game.

I have to quote this because it's so, so true. I hate when I'm talking to someone about an anime or a game, and if it's well-known, they refuse to give it the time of day. What? Does liking obscure stuff make you cool? Is it cool to have different tastes? Is the media in question inferior because so many people like it and you're just that much better than them that you can't like the same stuff? What?! I don't get it!

...Then again, I can't talk, because my favorite anime is ImaBoku and my favorite game is Magna Carta. Good luck to me in finding people who like them. >_>

I will say one thing. Advent Children made me stay away from all things Final Fantasy for a good month or so. That movie... Was... Well.

Geez, I'm sorry. I really CAN'T judge it fairly, but I don't think I've ever judged it. I just said why I liked Dot Hack, not what I disliked about FF7.

I admitted I was being petty, and I'm sorry. But I would give it a chance just to see what all the hype is about. I might even love it. All I know is I got lost in FF8, and I'm not a big fan of turn-based fighting. I do play them, but they aren't my favorite.

And I understand why people will still talk about old games. Some games are just that good, or hold special memories to you. And I would gladly give popular games a chance...
