Um, yeah. I don't think they meant for anyone to seriously believe Hotaru==guy. Even her seiyuu was under the impression she was voicing a girl. ^^
It's just a funny side-story with little connection to the plot (either of them; udeden's anime and manga are very different) other than taking it as a background. Something like how //GIFT was not a real episode, just a long (tortuous) buildup to a fanservice shot =P

No, offline Hotaru's character is a girl. Look at the slipcover picture and you'll have the proof Hotaru is a girl. I believe there is a topic about that slip cover as well.

That's the proof you need.Storm wrote:I have two comments on the radio drama (I cannot listen to it myself until I am in a postion to download it... I cannot from this military public terminal...).
I do not see how Ouka can be Mireille's sister. At 18 or so, I cannot bring myself to believe that Mistral is anything other then a young early mid twenties mother. I cannot believe that she had Mireille during the game and had a daughter 18 years before that, putting her in her forties, at least.
Am I wrong? Well I don't know. I've heard, "Ouka is her sister." I've heard "Ouka is her tutor." Which is real? <shrugs>
Also, the .Hack//Encyclopedia states that Hotaru is a girl. There is another book as well... argh... the title is .Hack//The World Almanac, I believe. It also states Hotaru is a girl.

For the shock factor. Because the fact of the matter is, up until the point that this radio drama was made, Hotaru was undeniably a girl.Ichida wrote:why would they defy their own character designs
I'll say it's well-hidden. They specifically say in the radio drama that Hotaru's avatar is male. However, every single scrap of evidence in the series itself up until that point says that without a doubt, Hotaru is certainly playing a female character. Even when one goes back over the series while thinking that Hotaru is male, all of the evidence still points to the fact that Hotaru is female.unless it was meant to be well-hidden up to this point?
Stop trying to rationalise the drama with respect to everything else that we've seen. It is blatantly non-canon, and only serves to make everyone go "whoa! I never knew that!"
And then there's the "slipcover" image (although in the Tokyopop version, it's at the back, before the advertisements... and curiously enough, the two halves of the image appear to have been swapped). This is an image drawn by the original manga-ka himself. The man who invented the character in the first place. And Hotaru is most certainly a girl, and not a bishounen.

Well quoted, Hotaru will never be a strange Tsukasa case...Belthazar wrote:For the shock factor. Because the fact of the matter is, up until the point that this radio drama was made, Hotaru was undeniably a girl.Ichida wrote:why would they defy their own character designs

Stop feeding the flames, d5t - there is really no way that this drama is supposed to be canon. Hotaru consistently acts and dresses like a girl through the entire course of the series, and the drawing we have of her (by the manga-ka, no less!) shows her as a girl.

Hotaru is a girl, according to everything but that TV drama. Stop talking about the whole male or female thing. Hotaru is a female, stop making the mystery really be that way. Hotaru is female, period.
