Odd Moments in the .Hack//Sign Series

I've had this on my mind for a while now,but I noticed several weird things in .hack//sign.Or should I say something like "mistakes that the japanese made",or something?Let me just give an example...in episode 4,I believe it was called "Wanted" or "The Wanted" or something like that, more than half way through the episode these 4 female long arms run into Tsukasa in a dungeon. He wasn't in the mood so he let his guardian kill them.I felt bad for those girls, but they FAILED.Anyway, what bothered me was this:when the female long arm with the red hair was knocked down,I noticed that when she was yelling "Don't run!" to her teammates, she was clutching her stomach,as if she was in real pain. You get what I'm trying to say right? If it's only a game then why did she seem like she was really hurt?Even the notion of her pretending to be hurt sounds silly to me.I don't mean to sound like some know it all critic, but if there are only 28 episodes they could have at LEAST made sure that they didn't do something like that.Don't get me wrong,I love .hack//sign to death, but every time I watch that episode it just ticks me off for some reason.Anyway, your opinions are vey welcome :3 I wanna know what you guys think.

maybe the guardian does inflict 'sensation' of pain, since getting data drained by one means gone unconscious in real.

I'm with VirusCoreS on this, I always thought the Guardian could inflict real pain since it was abnormal and could render people unconscious in real life.

Though one thing that wasn't right, in an episode Tsukasa received mail from Mimiru to meet her but how can Tsukasa check mail without logging out? Unless that counts as a different type of mail or Morganna allows him to check mail from the fields xD

Tsukasa's Guardian must be able to inflict an abnormal amount of pain on the user~ Seeing as it renders the PC unconscious in real life. This is evidenced by the Silver Knight. When he gets attacked by the guardian, he is seen yelling in pain as his character is deleted.

Er go, One would assume the guardian inflicts "pain" upon the person...Much like Skeith did to Sora.

Theory: Like in .hack// ROOTS, AIDA was able to affect a persons mental state by using the electric waves given of by the brain. (If I'm right.. Ovan mentions something along these lines. Not sure if i'm getting it correct though, but it has to deal with the body giving off something electrical that the AIDA manifests itself to, causing the Coma-induces state) Surely, the guardian too must be an AIDA. Therefore, by attacking the persons brain, it could send a "pain" signal that the player might experience in real life.

~ Just a theory.

Wrong. All of it.

All the Guardian did was Data Drain.

And the Guardian and AIDA are completely different entities seeing as the Guardian was created by Morganna and AIDA is just random glitches across the internet becoming self-aware and going berserk.

And how AIDA, Guardian etc. were able to affect a person mentally wasn't because of anything electrical. Its all in the basis of Liminality.

No worries. Nice try though. But watching the OVA Liminality wont get you all the answers(though its still recommended). I didn't mean the movie.

Look up the word, Liminality.
Liminality is the in-between period, or a threshold in between two other aspects.
Liminality is a term used in anthropology to refer to the transition period between two states. For instance a student who has completed all of the requirements for graduation, but not yet received his diploma is in a state of Liminality. In regards to .hack, the term is used to refer to the grey area between the game world, and the real world. As the characters who play within The World, don't belong entirely to either one, existing in a sort of grey zone between the two worlds
In .Hack's perspective, this means when a person's mind/consciousness begins to "enter the plain of existence" of The World. In . Hack, not only is The World an MMORPG, but METAPHORICALLY SPEAKING its another plain of existence. And when a player's mind begins to "cross-over" they're in a state of Liminality. That's not to say, that a player's actual mind is in The World while they're playing as if "mind suspension" or something. Its quite simple, its even present in real life.

Now in terms of how comatose occurs, when a player's mind undergoes Liminality, it forms kind of a "link" between the player in the real world and themselves in the game. When something occurs that damages the mind while "in The World" and severs the tether between the player in the real world and game world(Data Drain, AIDA, etc.), that's when the player in real life goes comatose.

Ah, see? That makes much more sense now. Thanks for the clarification.
You also answered my next question. Thank you.

As for weird moments in .hack// SIGN , I've always had a question..

In episode 28, all the people get together... but i'm not sure about timelines.
Did Mia come Before/After Macha?
And why does she follow Elk around instead of Tsukasa? o.o
Because Elk looks like him?

Sorry! Last question:

If Sora got Data Drained....How is he attending the party afterwards? (Episode 28) X____X I thought he was like.. Amnesia-Stricken or something..

1) You could've just edited your first post. Its not that hard.

2) Mia started out as Macha, the cat you see in //SIGN. But after Macha got data drained by Morganna for betraying her, she came back as an AI named Mia with the Morganna factor of the Temptress, also knows as Macha in IMOQ attached to her.

3) And yes, you answered you're own question, the reason why Mia is friends with Elk is because his striking resemblance to Tsukasa.

4) Bear and Orca are too different character with two different players who coincidentally have two similar character designs. Its an MMORPG after all, its inevitable to see two character who look similar.

5) That Sora you saw at the end of Unison was an AI. The real Sora quit The World after he woke up.

Odd moments... I guess it would be around the time Elk met Tsukasa in Unison. I imagined it if either had telepathy it would go something like this.
Elk: Wha... Who? My Mia... Get away!
Tsukasa: Yours? Tough grunties but aren´t I the man she wants you to be.
(Link Edition) W/Endrance: ... *DRAWS SWORD* if kill two birds with one stone...
Tabby: Hellcat!!
Endrance: Exactly... wait what?
Sakisaka: Whispers mode has been offline all day.
Endrance/Tsukasa/Elk: (-_-;)
Mia:...
Phyllo (In The Distance Holding Saku Back): See? A feline is a puzzle for which there is no solution." Right little catling.?
MIA-AIDA:Nyaa...
End

This isn't exactly and "odd" moment, but i didn't want to make a whole thread for it. I noticed that when it's showing the next episode preview at the end of an episode, i think i can hear a little variation of the Net Slum theme from the games. Can anyone else hear this? I thought it was neat.

It's not that odd. Across the series, characters often exhibit "pained" reactions whenever something inflicts harm on them. Presumably, it's all just reflexive. When you're hit in the stomach, even if it doesn't hurt, your first reaction is to clutch it, right? It's probably the same thing here. They don't necessarily feel the hit, but they see their character get hit. Supposedly, [The World]'s visuals are extremely realistic to the point where it's possible to forget that you're playing a game. That would only serve to strengthen any reflexive actions one might take. For instance, in .hack//Quantum, when Sakuya gets kicked in the face, she goes "いた。。。くない。" which basically means something like "It hurts! ... wait no it doesn't". She instinctively says "It hurts!" only to retract it when she realized she felt nothing. It's the same concept here.

Also, Unison probably isn't canon. Sora never logs into [The World] ever again after awakening from his coma. He loses all memories of ever playing [The World] to begin with. That's why when he logs into [The World R:2] for the first time, he acts like he's never seen such a game before. Tsukasa also stops playing [The World] after the events of .hack//SIGN. Unison is pretty much just fanservice.
