I seem to notice some similarities to .hack//sign and neon genesis evangelion,
1.tsukasa and shinji: theyre both shy and mentally traumatized by their fathers.
2.mimiru and asuka: they have a love/hate relationship with the lead characters and the fact that they show a lot of spunk.
3.subaru and rei: the lead characters of the series have an interest in them and that they both have blue hair.

.Hack sign was made by the same people who did Neon Genesis Evangelion so the similarity and resemblance is uncanny. :P I'm not sure on who, whether it was the writer, art director or director, but I remembered Hiroshi Matsuyama stating that it was someone from that project helping with .Hack Sign. Iirc, it was from one of the liminality disc that has that interview.

The overlap was really only the character designer...

Oh hey, good job, you've noticed character archetypes and dynamics that are present in EVERY WORK OF FICTION EVER.

uh I know that, but I'm just wondering, if they can copy evangelion's charm and put it on .hack why couldnt they do the same thing for legend of the twilight instead of putting all those incest jokes, thanks to that I have to keep my kids away from my .hack dvd collection.

Because Japan really really likes Twincest?

Besides, your statement is really totally contradictory. Evangelion's "charm" includes the main character trying to get with a clone of his mom.

As it was mentioned the only connection between the series seems to be the character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto. There are story similarities but as anyone else would assume that happens over time, too much media against one original piece. Regarding legend of twilight that was a comedy and .hack had already focused on the more the serious themes during sign, .hack, another birth, and liminality. In the same way you could state G.U. should be closer to Gundam. Still its a fun thought...

The explanation is right there, actually. This was on Nog's mind the whole time they were working on the series. It's actually from .hack//The World Vol.3. I know I posted a cameraphone pic of it when I first got a hold of the magazine but I can't find the post...

To me this resembles neon genesis evangelion a lot.

It's pretty strange if you ask me. but then again that's pretty obvious

Ditto, and Aura as Rei. Morganna Gendo, Mimiru Asuka, Bear Kaji...uh, and it falls apart after that.
