A good ole' fashion HATE THREAD.

I haven't seen a lot of anime I really like, I'm insanely picky because most of it is stupid garbage.
Cowboy Bebop, //SIGN, Shin Chan, FLCL, examples of 'different' and awesome anime.

But now, let's talk about //Roots.
//Roots is terrible. It has all the symptoms of a crappy saturday morning cartoon when it's quite
obviously trying to be something epic. Sorry, you were way off, stop trying, please. Now let me
further explain these 'symptoms' I mean:

» A generic retarded opening.
For a supposedly gloomy and depressing show, the theme song sure is upbeat and high-pitched.

» Lazy animation.
When you're doing a fight scene, DO A FIGHT SCENE.

» Corny script-writing.
Did you just have no idea what to make the character say just now?

» Varied acting talent throughout the cast. (This is partially a compliment (OH MY!))
Most of it was great actually, but Tabby. Tabby needed to stfu.

» A generic retarded ending.
See above.

I had ALL the episodes in front of me ready to watch but I actually had to STOP watching it half way
through and ponder if I should keep going. It was just that painful to watch. And while I did enjoy some
moments, they all add up to only maybe 4-5 minutes. Yeah, P.O.S. x999.

Alright I feel better.

» A generic retarded opening.

Kind of catchy, but I agree. Its one of the reasons I don't like R2. All their mainstream, cliche, sell out garbage including generic opening and ending of roots. I mean in the end I like it, but you're right. Then again, I don't think an average opening/ending makes an anime bad, it just doesn't make it as good as it could have been. And even then.. it just an opening/ending, it doesn't effect the story. You can't possibly say SIGN would have been bad if it had a different and worse opening/ending? Though I understand it is just another piece of straw on your back.

» Lazy animation.
I didn't quote it, but you were talking about fighting?

Uh.. .hack has never been about epic fight scenes. But when they do have them they serve their purpose well. This includes roots. The only fight scene that I would consider actually bad in the animation department is Brigade vs TaN. It could have been an awesome fight scene but it was just a lot of still shots, and flashing of lights. I admit I was disappointed, but then again I don't come to .hack for the fights.

I'm not saying that to somehow justify bad animation and fights, I'm saying that its not bad animation. Its a different style of story telling.

However, besides that one fight the rest of them serve their purpose and are fairly entertaining to watch. Saburo, Tri Edge, 100pks (a big fight, so once again a lot of stills and flashes, but pretty good over all. Love Haseo switching weapons mid fight and destroying that melon head.)

If you want fight scenes, watch a different anime.

» Corny script-writing.
Examples? I'm not disagreeing, I would just like to see. Roots didn't seem corny to me. I didn't like it as much as other .hack media for various reasons, but corny writing didn't seem to be one of them.

» Varied acting talent throughout the cast. (This is partially a compliment (OH MY!))
English or Japanese? If English, well thats bad localization, not bad anime. Original, then yea I guess you could lay blame if you don't find the original voices pleasing, but voices shouldn't weigh that heavily unless it makes it unwatchable. I mean if me and my friends fan dub Cowboy Bebop with retarded voices that doesn't make Cowboy Bebop a bad anime, it makes us dipshits.

» A generic retarded ending.

See opening.

I disagree with you already, but let's see your points.
» A generic retarded opening.
For a supposedly gloomy and depressing show, the theme song sure is upbeat and high-pitched.
Sorry, back up, who said this show was supposed to be gloomy and depressing? You're projecting here. As for the theme song being upbeat and high-pitched, you need to consider that the first half of the series was really cheerful, straightforward, and RPG-esque. The "depressing", relevant stuff doesn't come in until halfway through the series.

Basically, it's a bait-and-switch.
» Lazy animation.
When you're doing a fight scene, DO A FIGHT SCENE.
What's wrong with the animation?
» Corny script-writing.
Did you just have no idea what to make the character say just now?
Instead of complaining and moaning and wasting internet space, how about you actually articulate what you mean? What's wrong with the script? Any specific examples?

Hell, are you talking about the English or Japanese language scripts, anyway? If the latter, it could be a problem with whatever fansubs you were reading or whatever, and the English is acknowledged to be terrible.
» Varied acting talent throughout the cast. (This is partially a compliment (OH MY!))
Most of it was great actually, but Tabby. Tabby needed to stfu.
English Tabby or Japanese Tabby? The latter is pretty great, IMO. I'll give you that English Tabby sucks.
» A generic retarded ending.
See above.
Er...want to give any details, at all? Whatsoever? Frankly, it was by Ali Project, who is awesome and so unbelievably befitting of .hack that I can't find any complaint. I partially suspect this to be a troll post.

Actually, if you think the opening was annoying and high-pitched, then... well, let's just say it could've been a LOT worse. I think the opening is just fine. Same goes for the ending.

As Tolby already pointed out, .hack (especially the anime) aren't known for their fight scenes. BUT, the few times Roots did have fight scenes they were done okay. There's one later on involving Haseo and a character named Saburou (I'm assuming based off your post that you didn't get far enough in to know this person yet) that's darn cool. Plus the one with Tri-Edge and Haseo. So yeah.

Again, as others have already pointed out, if you're going to say the script was corny it'd be nice if you could provide specific examples.

For the voice acting, I don't find Tabby's VA to be bad at all. Depends on if you're talking about the dub or the sub though.

I disagree with OP's points, but still agree with OP's opinion. //Roots always was and always will be pretty boring to me. And I actually liked English dub Haseo more than in G.U. <_<

And as much as I dislike Ali Project, Boukoku Kakusei Catharsis is practically Haseo's theme song.

.hack//ROOTS, from the few scattered episodes I got to see, was more like an anime based off a book than anything else. The episodes were oriented around the story telling, and not the combat, which is okay. It may have been humdrum and uninteresting at times, but you had to look at the larger story in the making. I personally really liked the opening theme (Hell, I even suggested to my fiancee we play it at the wedding to see her reaction. She burst out laughing and rolled her eyes) but I also loved the .hack//SIGN opening, so meh, it's just my type of music.

The script was admittedly cheesy as hell, but it made me laugh so much. "Teacher, YOU ARE GOING TO DIE!" "I can't just leave you here!" Aaah, Sakisaka, acting the hero to save the girl... when "death" just means "warp back to the save shop with your last save data intact." I mean seriously, that made me crack up so hard for some reason... and then Haseo shows up like some hero who also stares "warp back to the save shop with your last save data intact," I mean "death" in the face... it's just so silly I HAVE to laugh.

I'll give you "boring" due to the slow pace, but honestly, the other points, meh. The VA's weren't bad per se, but playing G.U. before watching Roots threw me off because of how different some characters sounded. As for animation, it was mostly good, my one gripe was 3rd form Haseo's spine, really, and even then I just saw a screenshot, I didn't see any episodes at all after the battle with Tan (In fact, I didn't see that one either, I'm just using it as a landmark of sorts.)

Well, actually, since .hack//Roots was actually the first series of .hack that i've watched.....yeah, i kinda agree.

>>>OPENING THEME
I love the opening song actually... I just thought that the song was meant for those who ENJOY the game (not like Haseo who only wants power and stuff....Maybe like Gaspard? Or Tabby? To have fun in the game?) And maybe even the relationship of some of the players....but the translation (or meaning) of the song was totally for Haseo... :)

>>>FIGHT SCENES
Agreed on this part. I couldn't stand watching flashes of light on the screen when I'm totally into gore fighting scenes!!! We all know that's it's just a game. BUT AT LEAST PUT BLOOD EFFECTS ON THE CHARACTERS!! >w< :D

>>>CORNY SCRIPT WRITING
Corny. Hands down.

>>>ACTING TALENT
Only paid attention to Haseo or to Azure Kite.....er....well, I guess the rest must have done good... ^^;

>>>RETARD ENDING
I wouldn't say it was THAT bad....At least it ended all his troubles (in some sort of way...)....but yeah, Haseo just ends up remembering the past and that's all......THAT'S ALL?! AT LEAST PUT SOMETHING MORE INTERESTING! One thing's for sure, It left me (and hopefully other fans) wanting for more

...
That's my opinion though.... ^^;

Roots was okay it was definitely better than the Legend of the Twilight (anime), but it's writing lacked behind SIGN. The obvious problem that I had with Roots was that it was inconsistent and shifted haphazardly from silly to serious throughout. The animation was definitely better than SIGN, but the characters on the other hand weren't as well developed as SIGN. Overall I like Roots, but I can't say that it leaves a lasting impression. The .hack anime's have always been interesting, but when I compare them to other popular franchises I feel they could have been better. I still consider the novels to be the best works of the series especially Another Birth and Cell.
