I think there are around 30 story areas. But if your discussing possible combinations then its somewhere around 340,067,700,000,000,064,152,328,840,600. (So about 340 Nonillion, if everything is right)

So visiting every area is a waste of time basically?

Well there's 109 set-up areas in the series (give or take) but Phantom Thief is right on the money, there are 30 unique areas in Vol. 1, roughly 16 or so necessary story areas that you have to visit.

Outside of fields and dungeons with setups the game procedurally generates dungeons based on a unique program that compiles them through the keyword system. It's extremely complicated and I don't understand the finer parts of it.
