.hack & Project X Zone

Post by Lindz »

Kite: "I wonder if this battle's ever gonna end?"
Aty: "Just take it easy. Keep walking ahead and never give up."
Haseo: "At a walking pace, huh? Yeah, great."

Ya. It's like that.

Hey! I'm one of that rare variety of peoples who has a blast playing this pair of games an doesn't get worn down blasting through numerous chapters a day! For those .hack fans around here who didn't like the demos of either game or w/e I figured I'd get around ta posting some things about 'em! Of course they're not exactly in the main series canon obviously but I found it cool how many stages/objectives/etc. revolved around The World an its things in both PXZ games! Gonna start things off nice & simple with... the good guys!

- Crosspedia Bios
Kite
Voice: Sayaka Aida
• One of the legendary PCs (player characters) called ".hackers" from the online game "The World".
• Kite once used the power of the Twilight Bracelet entrusted to him by Aura to resolves a far-reaching virus incident whose repercussions extended even into the real world.
• He is currently equipped with a new Twilight Bracelet.
• He has a warm and calm personality and is an excellent leader, altrough he has a tendency to worry too much about trivial things.
• In real life, he's a junior high school student.

BlackRose
Voice: Masumi Asano
• One of the .hackers, the same as Kite.
• She pursued the truth of the virus incident in order to save her younger brother, who fell into a coma while playing "The World." She and Kite have known each other since around the time they both started playing, and operate together due to getting along so well.
• She is a little short-tempered and direct, but she has a cheerful personality and tries to never to show weakness, even when things get rough.
• She is a high school student in real life, and sometimes lectures or berates the younger Kite in a sisterly way.

Haseo
Voice: Takahiro Sakurai
• A PC in the sequel to The World, "The World: R2".
• Back when he first started playing, one of his guildmates, a girl named Shino, was PKed and turned into a Lost One by Tri-Edge, a PC who looked identical to Kite. Burning with anger, Haseo set off to find Tri-Edge and extract revenge. As he gathered new companions, he learned about AIDA, an AI data anomaly not bound by the rules of the game world, and he discovered that he possesses a special power known as an Avatar.
• For a time after Shino was lost, Haseo kept strictly to himself and avoided contact with other players. But once he met Atoli, a PC who looks like Shino, and Kuhn, who went out of his way to warn him about the dangers of Avatars, he learned the value of using strength to protect rather than attack. In time, his PC evolved through Job Extend quests, reflecting Haseo's own growth as a person.
• He is socially awkward by nature, and his contemptuous attitude still comes out at times, but inside his heart is slowly becoming warmer and more compassionate.

Aura
Voice: Maaya Sakamoto
• An NPC created by the developer of The World, Harald Hoerwick in a plot to develop the ultimate AI. She has the ability to grow in a humanlike fashion by studying how to think as humans do.
• While she was being pursued by the controlling program of The World, Morganna, who wanted to shut her down, Aura sent a message to Kite asking for help.
• Learning about the human heart from his subsequent struggle, she finally performed a very human act, sacrificing herself.
• However, a few months later she was reborn, and now she watches events unfold as the will of The World.

Few months later, what do ya know! Both PXZ games apparently take place in 2011 since the MC's of the second game identify with Kite's time as being when they're from an thats exactly when Kite, BlackRose, & Aura are pulled from. Haseo comes from 7 years later which means 2018... or 2017 because CC2 always kinda forgot about the post-game adventures or something! Look 7 years later sounds cooler than 6 years later okay? Anyways unlike the R:1 characters, Haseo's still in the midst of his journey. He's pulled from Reminisce sometime after getting his 3rd form and before learning the truth. imo Their personalities come through untouched as their dialogue seems like stuff they'd say. Say what ya will about either games story, the writers at the very least did their homework!

Other stuff hmm... it's assumed by the characters themselves that during these events that in the real world they've become Lost Ones. As for being in their PC bodies in the real/other worlds? Chalk it up to multi-dimensional crazyness an leave it at that. In the first PXZ when real people show up in The World, Aura mentions Real Digitalization so it seems like a thing she's known about long before Jyotaro/Link huh?

I bought the first game, but I couldn't get through enough to reach the dot hack portion and the gameplay wasn't holding my attention that much so I put it down and regrettably never picked it back up. It is great to finally ready some things about the dot hack sections of it.

How far did ya get? In PXZ they're brought in at Chapter 7 which in the grand scheme of that game is early. PXZ2 bumps 'em up to prologue status and are brought in on Prologue 4!

Baddies? Places? Moves? Nah! Let's dig into our inventories an check out some items & equipment!

Project X Zone
Items
Healing Serum: Heal HP 50% for all allies
Recovery Drink: Heal HP 70% for all allies
---
Mage's Soul: XP 10% increase (to no higher than 100%)
Artisan's Soul: XP 30% increase (to no higher than 100%)
Emperor's Soul: XP 70% increase (to no higher than 100%)
---
Omnipotent Soda: Heal one ally of all ailments

The effects may not be exactly the same but the order in which they come is! I guess Omnipotent Soda was borrowed from G.U. because IMOQ didn't have a one-stop heal-all status item?

Equipment
Adventurer Broadsword: ATK+5
A Broadsword used by the Heavy Blade class.

Cats Blades: ATK+10
Duel swords used by a member of the Beast race.

Sakabatou: ATK+7 & TEC+5
A reverse-blade Broadsword used by the Heavy Blade class.

Sora's Blades: ATK+20
The duel swords used by Sora. Charged with memories.
---
Goblin Boots: DEF+5 & TEC+3
Yellow Goblin boots.

Goblin Gloves: DEF+10
Yellow Goblin gloves.

Goblin Mail: DEF+7 & TEC+5
Yellow Goblin armor.
---
Vital Charm: HP+600
A protective charm overflowing with vitality.

Goblin Cap: HP+800
A yellow Goblin cap.
---
Aura Figurine: Nullify ailment < Bind >
A mysterious figurine. Has the power to break seals.

"Adventurer Broadsword" is obviously just the plain ol' Level 1 broadsword called Adventurer. Dunno why they added the broadsword since its in the description anyways. Aside from the "Aura Figurine" all of these things can be found in the IMOQ games! Duel is their typo btw not mine!

Project X Zone 2
Items
Weird Black Tea: Restores 10% of max HP/SP (all units).
Strange Coffee: Restores 50% of max HP/SP (all units).
Holy Potion: Restores 10% of max SP (all units).
Godly Potion: Restores 50% of max SP (all units).
Wonder Potion: Restores 100% of max SP (all units).
---
Antidote Soda: Heals Poison (1 unit).
Esthesio Soda: Heals Stun (1 unit).
Solution Soda: Heals Bind (1 unit).
Revival Potion: Heals KO (1 unit).
Revival Serum: Heals KO (all units).
---
Wonder Soda: Heals all status ailments (1 unit).
Omnipotent Soda: Heals all status ailments (all units).

Once again the order of the healing things match up. Stun is a stand-in for Paralysis and Bind is a stand-in for Seal so each of the Soda's work the way they do in G.U.! Revival Potion is obviously a typo'd Revive Potion, or maybe its the other way around? The games had Revival Medicine and Revival Serum, so Revive Potion is the odd one out.

Equipment
Broad Legged: ATK+60 / TEC+5

Sora's Blades: ATK+48 / DEF+5 / TEC+5 / DEX+5 / SP+10
Nullifies Back Attacks

Twilight Bracelet Replica: ATK+91 / TEC+10 / DEX+10 / HP+3000
Stun Rate Up 10%

Lit Honeysuckle: ATK+78 / SP+20
Charge Bonus damage up 20%

Goblin Gloves: ATK+108
Skill SP cost Down 10%

Red Cross Staff: ATK+172 / TEC+15
Nullifies Heavy

Empty Skies: ATK+261 / DEF+50 / HP+6000 / SP+20
HP Counter
---
Cats Boots: DEF+108 / TEC+10 / DEX+5 / SP+10
Nullifies ZOC

Air Rollershoes: DEF+170 / DEX+15
Nullifies ZOC

Empty Eye of Sin: DEF+199
Skill SP cost Down 20%

Cute White Self-Improving AI: DEF+232
Halves Counterattack SP cost

Sadly the sequel didn't have equipment descriptions though in their place is some major POWER CREEP. Seriously look at the stats on these things compared the previous game @_@; Not to mention almost all of 'em having bonus side effects! This time there are three original pieces of gear. "Twilight Bracelet Replica" could be Kite's second bracelet, or maybe Shugo's? Who knows! I can only assume the "Red Cross Staff" is meant to represent/be Skeith's staff and that "Cute While Self-Improving AI" can only mean its another Aura item! The rest are a mixture of IMOQ and G.U. gear since Kite & Haseo are a mixed-era team.

Heh, that's some neat information. Some great references here as well. Do weapons show up on their character? If so I'd love to see what the Twilight Bracelet Replica and the Red Cross Staff look like in battle. It is kind of odd to see Aura as a piece of armor though.

Nooo cause of how "Pair" units work weapons/gear aren't visible. Ya can only equip one weapon & one accessory to a pair so there would be the question of which character it shows up on. An even the Resident Evil characters can equip say, the Broad Legged but they'll still use their guns, not pull some big ol' sword outta nowhere. Plus because of how criticals work having different shaped weapons then you're used to would really throw off your timing!

Now onto the baddies!

- Crosspedia Bios
Project X Zone
Skeith
Voice: ---
• One of the eight Phases created by "The World" management program, Morganna, in order to destroy Aura. Attacked Kite's friend, Orca, at Morganna's behest, sending him into a coma in the real world.

• Skeith has the ability to cause status ailments on PCs.

Skeith Zero
Voice: ---
• The original form of Skeith. One of the eight Phases created by "The World" management program, Morganna, in order to destroy Aura.
• Contains the consciousness of Sora, a PC who cooperated with Morganna to begin with but ultimately turned against her.
• Skeith Zero also eventually split into eight, one of which acts as vanguard in the continuing pursuit of Aura.

Stehoney
Voice: Noboyuki Hiyama
• A Golden Goblin.
• Characterized by being extremely fleet of foot. An underling of the other Golden Goblins, the "Four Goblin Kings," who are Jonue, Zyan, Albert, and Martina.
• Once challenged Kite to a game of Goblin Tag.

Sphinx Menhir
Voice: ---
• A stone statue of a monster sitting cross-legged and holding what looks like a human head.
• As well as taking advantage of its weight to crush its foes, it also attacks with magic.

Yup, Skeith Zero is here and just like in .hack//ZERO its plotline is left dangling lol. Dunno if that was an in-joke or because PXZ isn't uh really good for plot x.x; The Golden Goblins are the initial focal point of one of the games chapters and unless ya know what you're doing their antics could very well cost you a game over! The same baddie, different color crews all appear in the game starting with the weakest versions and upgrading as ya move along. Thankfully the Menhir's don't revive each other/other baddies in a stage! The bugged out Headhunter name spelling is just like it is in the .hack games to!

Project X Zone 2
Skeith
Voice: ---
• One of the eight Phases created by management program of The World, Morganna, in order to destroy Aura. This is the first Phase, "The Terror of Death", which has the ability to give PCs status ailments.
• At Morganna's behest, he attacked Kite's friend, Orca, sending him into a coma in the real world.
• The red wand Skeith carries is said to contain the minds he has stolen from PCs.

Azure Kite
Voice: Sayaka Aida
• A mysterious PC also known as "Tri-Edge" who hunts and PKs other players in The World.
• He exudes an ominous aura and lacks any kind of visible expression. On the surface, he looks exactly like Kite, even wielding the same triple-edged blades, but otherwise he is very different from regular PCs. He is able to float, teleport, and split into three separate versions, enabling him to attack an opponent from different directions simultaneously.
• When Haseo first tracked him down, Azure Flame Kite defeated him easily and used his Data Drain ability to revert Haseo's PC to its initial state. At first he was believed to be the same kind of being as AIDA, but other PCs thought to be his allies have been known to oppose AIDA. the truth remains a mystery.

Stehoney
Voice: Noboyuki Hiyama
• A Golden Goblin. It is particularly fleet of foot.
• An underling of the other Golden Goblins, the Four Goblin Kings (Jonue, Zyan, Albert, and Martina).
• Together with the four kings, it once challenged Kite to a game of Goblin Tag.

• A Golden Goblin. It is particularly fleet of foot.
• Together with the Four Goblin Kings, it challenged Kite during his third round of Goblin Tag.
• The T stands for "Turbo".

Stehoney X
Voice: Noboyuki Hiyama
• A Golden Goblin. It is particularly fleet of foot.
• Together with the Four Goblin Kings, it challenged Kite during his fourth round of Goblin Tag.
• The X is simply an attempt to look strong and cool. This also accounts for the undeniable mystique of X the Reploid and Mr. X the crime boss.

Headhunter
Voice: Yukitarou Namura
• An undead monster carrying a massive sword and a skull. It swings its sword with all of its strength.

Headless King
Voice: Yukitarou Namura
• An undead monster carrying a massive sword and a skull. It swings its sword with all of its strength, but it also uses attack magic.

AIDA < ANNA >
Voice: ---
• The most primitive type of AIDA, an AI data anomaly that is no longer bound to the rules of The World. It floats in the air like a marine organism and attacks by firing Algol Lasers and Kobold Bullets, the latter of which were of course named for the famous programming language "Kobold".

Bugborn Alpha

Bugborn Beta

Goblin Mage

Goblin Sage
Voice: ---
• A spellcasting low-level monster found in The World. It looks suprisingly intellectual for belonging to such a simple-minded species.

Strange Head
Voice: ---
• A beast-type monster with a distinctive nose. Normally it moves quite sluggishly, but when it's ready to attack it will roll itself up and charge at its opponent with surprsing speed.

Olin Pack
Voice: ---
• A beast-type monster with a distinctive nose. Normally it moves quite sluggishly, but when it's ready to attack it will roll itself up and charge at its opponent with surprsing speed.

Gigamouth
Voice: Yoshiaki Hasegawa
• A monster with an enormous mouth. It attacks by winding up its upper body and pounding away with its abnormally long tongue.

Apititer
Voice: Yoshiaki Hasegawa
• A monster with an enormous mouth. It attacks by winding up its upper body and pounding away with its abnormally long tongue.

Skeith being back is bad news for Haseo since it means he can't use his Avatar! It's good news for Xiaomu since when Haseo declares that it is "his Skeith" she get ta crack the joke "Holy crap, Skeith-slash-Haseo is actually canon?!" lol. Azure Kite is an enemy... maybe? As in Roots/G.U. he's got a job to do soooo?? Naturally Haseo mistakes Kite for him at the start of the game! Much to many players dismay the Golden Goblins return! Their little competition is thankfully easier this time around but even when ya got 'em beat they declare they'll return in 7 years better then ever! AIDA is one of the big plot points throughout the game so its a shame we only get the most basic version of it to fight. Its effects are felt as it infects friend and foe alike. An like before the rest of the baddies show up in their increasing more difficult versions!

Well, you convinced me. Since I was out today I went and picked up the sequel. That said there's some interesting lore here, and some clear mistakes. The Eight Phases are Morganna herself, so why they say that the rest of the Phases are in Skeith Zero seems rather bizarre. It was my understanding that the Phases lay dormant until they were next to be invoked and couldn't be encountered out of order (hence why Mia transformed into Macha shortly after Gorre's defeat). Also Kite "wielding the same triple-edged blades" makes no sense. Unless it's Project X Zone story explanation, Kite never wielded anything similar to Empty Skies.

It's great to hear AIDA is a pretty big part of the plot. Though since Skeith is the only Phase mentioned I assume that he's the Only Phase in the game?

In Link's .hack//ZERO scenario when you defeat Skeith Zero it's shown splitting up into a buncha different parts so I assume the Skeith we saw in SIGN and ZERO was Skeith Zero. When defeated it seperated into the eight phases which then lay dormant, aside from Skeith?
Also Kite "wielding the same triple-edged blades" makes no sense. Unless it's Project X Zone story explanation, Kite never wielded anything similar to Empty Skies.
Hmm well actually if ya have a copy of XXXX Vol.2 go check out pg.186!

An to be fair there are 3 pronged Twin Blade weapons in IMOQ. None that look like Empty Skies but if people are blind enough to mistake Azure Kite for Kite well why not mistake the weapon to? It's like Amy Rose mistaking every hedgehog in the world for Sonic >_>; Long shot but maybe in Legacy he'll lose the Bracelet and gain an Emtpy Skies-esque weapon!

Skeith / Zero were also recurring plot points in the original but AIDA sticks it out to darn well near the end an is much more relevant. Skeith is the only phase in either game, an ta be fair alot of .hack media! Gorre never gets any love ;.;

Lv.19: Rip Teyn
Lv.24: Protect Break
Lv.29: Tri-Edge & Harpoon
Lv.33: Ap Do
Lv.38: Meteor Strike
Lv.43: Ap Corv

Set Stats
Movement Range: 6
Attack Range: 2
Special Attack Range: 3
Multi-Attack Range: 4

Attacks
Sparrow Counter & Gun Drive
Strength: C
XP Up: 6%

Solo Whirlwind Dance & Cyclone
Strength: B
XP Up: 4%

Gale Blade & Tiger Blitz
Strength: A
XP Up: 6%

Tiger Ring Blade & Xth Cross Chain
Strength: B
XP Up: 6%
This attack may inflict Down status on enemies.

Tri-Edge & Harpoon
Strength: B
XP Up: 5%
Critical+
This attack may inflict Stun status on enemies.

Special Attack: Data Drain
Strength: S
XP cost: 100%
Affects: 1 enemy
This attack may inflict Stun status on enemies.

Multi-Attack: Meteor Strike
Strength C
XP cost: 100%
Affects: 2-4 enemies
This attack may inflict Stun status on enemies.

Support Attack: Tri-Edge & Cyclone
Strength C

Unless I'm mistaken Gun Drive is supposed ta be Gan Drive. The names & animations of these are largely taken from G.U. and Versus such as BlackRose's Meteor Strike. So in a way we've got some Versus stuff officially translated? lol. Starting off with their A-rated normal attack already unlock is pretty nice especially compared to a few pair units who learn their strongest attack last.

Skills
Repth
Healing magic
XP Cost: 30%
Heal HP 30% (Ally)

Rip Maen
Active Skill: XP cost reduced by half for Rescuing active at all times
XP Cost: 50%

Rip Teyn
Magic that cures ailments
XP Cost: 10%
Heal all ailments (Ally)

Protect Break
XP: --
Active Skill: 30% Chance of nullifying enemy block

Ap Do
Magic that increases speed (Self)
XP Cost: 20%
Range +2

Ap Corv
Magic that enhances physical strength (Self)
XP Cost: 30%
ATK +15%

They've got a pretty great skillset all around. Reviving an ally for 50% of your XP instead of 100% is handy. There was no Seal status in IMOQ but Rip Teyn did cure Poison and Paralysis in those games as well as this, so another right call on callbacks! Protect Break rocks when it works cause late-game baddies get pretty high block meters an its satisfying ta see 'em get just straight shattered! Ap Do & Ap Corv can make the duo move farther an hit harder! Which as you'd expect can be super useful!

Project X Zone 2
In Level Up Order
Lv.--: Flame Dance & Tiger Blitz
Lv.--: Moonlight Blade & Lotus Flower
Lv.--: Data Drain
Lv.--: Tri-Flame & Reapers Dance
Lv.--: Repth
Lv.09: Double Gale Blade
Lv.09: Backstab
Lv.10: Additional Skill Slot Opened
Lv.12: Quick Rengeki
Lv.15: Ghost Falcon & Charge Slash
Lv.19: Rip Teyn
Lv.20: Additional Skill Slot Opened
Lv.23: Protect Break
Lv.--: The Terror of Death (story related)
Lv.25: Tri-Flame & Reapers Dance
Lv.30: Surprise Attack
Lv.33: Vengeful Blade
Lv.37: Rengeki Finish
Lv.43: Data Drain

During the final chapter of the game one of my pair units hit Lv.37 an learned a new skill. Sadly that unit was not Kite & Haseo! Thankfully NG+ doesn't just mean harder baddies but also higher Exp for beating 'em! So next time through I oughta learn if they got another move or two to discover! (update: on replaying the game in Hard Mode levels skyrocketed an I've filled in these last two blanks!)

Set Stats
Movement Range: 5
Attack Range: 2
SP-M-Rng: 0

Attacks
Flame Dance & Tiger Blitz
Strength: A

Moonlight Blade & Lotus Flower
Strength: B
May inflict Down status on enemies.

Double Gale Blade
Strength: C
May inflict Stun status on enemies.

Ghost Falcon & Charge Slash
Strength: A

Tri-Flame & Reapers Dance
Strength: C
May inflict Poison status on enemies.

Special Attack: Data Drain
Strength: S
May inflict Down status on enemies.

Multi-Attack: The Terror of Death
Strength: S

Support Attack: Tri-Flame & Reapers Dance
Strength: C
May inflict Poison status on enemies.

Once again attacks are primarily taken from G.U. and Versus. Thankfully Haseo makes use of his full (at the time) arsenal cause having 'em both just using nothing but Twin Blade attacks'd suck! The Terror of Death is basically Avatar Awakening which I always liked! One thing to note is that attacks in this game can be powered up by spending CP on 'em. This can increase their power, status ailment trigger rate, critical hit damage, and combo EXP. You're not gonna max 'em on a first playthrough or even a second so I didn't list the cost or stat increases cause they'll be a mystery to me for some time!

Skills
Repth
Kite's magic that heals the energy all adventurers rely on.
Cost: 20 SP
HP Recovered: 30% (Ally)

Backstab
Haseo can earn a damage bonus when hitting a foe from behind.
Cost: 70 SP
Back Attack Up 50% (Self)

Rip Teyn
Kite's magic that heals status ailments, always helpful in a pinch.
Cost: 30 SP
Heal Poison, Heal Stun, Heal Bind (Ally)

Surprise Attack
Haseo sneaks up on an unwitting foe, keeping out of sight before striking.
Cost: 70 SP
Side Attack Up 75% (Self)

Repth & Rip Teyn retain their usefulness but the real stars are Haseo's skills! I like to imagine Haseo customizing his weapons with the Bear Paw for the Backstab which makes for incredibly powerful attacks if ya can make use of it. Surprise Attack was in G.U. and customizing with a Cat Fang increases its damage. Side Attacks aren't as strong as Back Attacks but this skill helps close the gap, plus its more common to be in a position to get a Side Attack.

Messed up again here an didn't jot down the purchase cost of Protect Break. Next time!! This time around passive skills have to be equipped to a slot, more of which are unlocked as ya level up. Which means until you've gotten pretty far in you'll have ta pick an choose which ya wanna use. I like abusing Speed Talisman by spending up their SP healing others and next turn getting that movement bonus! I'm not sure what the difference is between Armor Pierce and Protect Break are but at least on the first playthrough I found 'em more useful then the others.
(updated too! got flavor text for active skills as well as filling in previously missing data!)
