.hack//G.U. battle system
Enemy AI:
Like the previous games, enemy A.I. will be able to detect a party and attack members in real-time. New in //G.U is the ability to launch suprise attacks on enemies. Launching surprise attacks will increase the amount of damage Haseo does to monsters in a battle. In fields Haseo can use his motorcycle to run into enemies before battle starts and create damage. Haseo will also be able to change weapons during combat in real-time.
Skill Triggers:
An R1 button icon displayed over Haseo's head in battle signals a chance for a skill trigger. Pressing R1 will stop time and allow a player to enter the selected buttons to complete a skill trigger. The skills depend on the type of weapon equipped. You can equip four skills at a time (one for the PS2's Triangle, Circle, X, and Square buttons respectivly) on any weapon.
Party Attacks (tension):
Multiple hit-combos on an enemy will give users a chance to use a party attack with Haseo. The attack creates damage much higher than some skill triggers. In order to trigger a Party Attack, the tension meter in the upper right corner of the screen during battle must be full. The more damage Haseo receives and gives, the faster the meter will go up. There are two types of Party Attacks in Vol. 1//Rebirth. The first attack makes characters glow red and increases almost every vital status. The second attack is where the party actually does an attack together.

Player Killer Battles:
"In addition to standard monster battles, [.hack//G.U.] will also offer versus battles against Player Killers. On the field map, certain spots titled "Battle Area" are visible. Once a player approaches these zones, he will automatically be drawn into battle. Players who are being attacked by a foe might call for help. Successfully aiding them in battle and taking down their opponents will be rewarded by discounts at guild shops." (RPGFan)

Arena Battle:
Remitt and Survival mode are the two confirmed Arena battle types. The battles take place in Lumina Cross (one of //G.U.'s root towns), and will have a 3-on-3 limit. When a battle is won, a "Winning Piece," or WP, is awarded.
