is Shino emo, and why?

The way she changed her PC costume, and her attitude clearly say so.

I never really looked at her being emo I looked more at it to honor the absent Ovan. Like a funeral dress :3

The black is more of a sign of Shino's resolution to stay and wait for Ovan.

I don't think they even have an emo culture in Japan, and even if they do, Shino certainly isn't one.

I hope you know that the word "Emo" is used incorrectly on these boards a LOT.

Emo was originally a type of punk made in te late 80's. Bands such as "Rites of Spring", "fugazi" and "Embrace" started it off. It spawned sub genres such as "Emoviolence" and "Screamo" a bit later. Emoviolence examples: Usurp synapse and Bastard! Screamo: pg. 99 and Circle Takes the Square.

EMO DOESN'T MEAN EMOTIONAL. It is a shortened word for "emotive". since, well, 99.7% of music is emotional anyways, it would not make sense for a genre to be called "Emotional"

And bands like "Hawthorne Heights", "My chemical romance", and any other sub-par poprock band today is just that, sub-par poprock.

MTV and FUSE misused the word "emo" in an interview, and has turned into a synoym for trendy little teenagers with too much money and maybe a fringe.

There never was, and never will be, a real emo subculture. Especially not in the mainstream.

'Emo' is most certainly a subculture that has permeated into the mainstream, just as much as goth or chav. The culture involves a depressive and cynical view on life which people express through their 'emo' music and style of clothing... As well as the famous fringe. ¬_¬

Regardless of where it came from, that's what it connotates now. Besides, 99.7% of music is probably 'emotive' as well...

Suffice to say Shino isn't part of a sub-par pop rock band either.

Shino's not emo. The color black isn't emo. Being cheerful and positive like Shino has been is not emo.

I know what the word Emo means, we used to have emos in my school,

and we also still have them in College ( I'm kinda emo btw...-_-).

Also... I know. But Shino is not a "Neo-emo". She does not partake in buying tons of AFI and MCR merchandise (I hope not, anyway), and does not have a fringe.

Just because someone is constantly full of sorrow, that does not make them "Emo". If that was the truth, I would be Emo. Haha. And I resent those trendy idiots.

Also... Goth... Well. This mainstream form of goth you speak of is known to in the REAL music community as "Mallgoth". They are just as bad as, if not worse, than the other self proclaimed Emos.

i dotn kno why, but when peopel call themselves emo or goths, it just makes them seem like there just trying to be one, but calling someone a emo is diffrent.

What I think Umbra meant is that 99.7% of all music is emotionally inspired and motivated and whatnot. Name one song that doesn't have some sort of emotional affinity. You can't.

The 'real music community' is not the mainstream, is it? Whether or not you call people who follow these cultural fashions 'emo' or 'goth' doesn't matter, the fact of the matter is that many people do.

And if you read my post, you'll see I also say that Shino is not what you call a 'neo-emo', though I can assure you I've never heard a person say 'neo-emo' or 'mallgoth'.

Precisely. The term 'emotive' means to cause emotion, intend to cause emotion, or involve emotion. There is very little music that does not involve some form of emotion or intend to make you feel in a certain way.

If 99.7% of music is emotional, then 99.7% of music will be emotive.

It's not me getting fussy, and regardless of whether or not these fashions and subcultures piss you off, they still exist and you can't deny that.

If it means 'Emotive Hardcore' then that's all well and good, suffice to say it has a different meaning in the mainstream.

No one ever said anything about her type of music, and she is NOT emo, if you think shes emo then you probably dont know what emo is. Do you know what she thinks of life? And the reason behind her wearing black? its not cause shes emo. Maybe you need to rewatch Roots all over again.
