Ok, my copy of Link came in today. Lets assume I know nothing about patching the game, because I don't, other than to follow the instructions on that blog.
I know I need to install some kind of custom firmware, but what is it and where can I find it? Also I saw that there will be a re-release of the patch so I'm not in any real hurry at this point.

I'm not quite the expert on the subject, but to put it simply, Custom Firmware (aka. CFW) is a hack that
unlocks your PSP, so to speak. It allows you to play games, without the UMD, it also allows you to use cool programs, like SNES9X (a SNES emulator) and Xplora.
However, if you put a CFW on your PSP, then your warranty is voided.
Now there are several versions that you can use, but I would recommend you use something like 6.60 ME-1.8 or 6.60 LME-1.8 (depending on what model of PSP you have) If you are starting fresh. Once again, I am not exactly an expert with this kind of thing, but I have been using 6.60 ME-1.8 on my PSP2000 for a while now, and I haven't encountered any problems with anything so far.

d5t that would be awesome.
Clockmocker, I'll be adding a cfw guide on my site before the next release. It wont be part of the .hack page but it will be a blog post.

I suggest the 6.60 PRO-C1 (latest version if PRO CFW) which enables playing online for ad-hoc only games without the need of a PS3 (adhoc party) or a PC (XLink Kai).
CFW (ingeneral) also lets you install plugins, adding new features like dumping UMD to ISO (faster loading times and consuming less energy), taking screenshot, using your music (mp3) while playing, or remapping the buttons in case you can't stand normal configuration (for example I like to use L/R to rotate camera in games like Monster Hunter and Gods Eater although you can only use d-pad normally).
I don't know if it voids your warranty, but in any case, you can still revert back to an official firmware (OFW) without laving any trace of modification.

That helps a lot guys, I have a psp 2001, wish i could hook it up to my tv like my friend's.
I do have another question, when I do apply the patch will I be able to use my save game that I've been playing to hold me over?
I'm not too far into the game so it doesn't matter one way or another.

Yeah, you can continue using your saved game after you applied the patch.

Indeed, since the game is the same "old" japanese one, save should be compatible from a patch revision to another

The instructions can be confusing but it's not so bad. The file size you got is correct. Either you accidentally missed a step, or your PSP is not running a custom firmware. If it is, the file may not be in the proper folder. Try doing the process over from the beginning and make sure you also follow your custom firmwares instructions for loading ISOs. If you end up with the same result, I'm not sure what is going wrong.
I got it to work the first time, so it's not too difficult. Keep trying.

I already had my psp cracked, so it is in the right folder, I even tried the folder where my psn games are. I followed the steps now 5times and every time my psp say defect data.

Your CFW edition might not be compatible with the hack, so you might try updating that, I've had this problem with lots of games.

Yeah, the video was ripped from the game and subbed for Youtube, but I don't believe we've figured out how to sub it to be used in-game. So, unless we plan on subbing it later in-game, it'll remain without subs.

I don't think so since I could played the game with the Umd but not the patched Iso, also I'm on 6.60 so it shouldn't be outdated for this game. :/
