In any case, if it's strategy and difficult thinking you want, IMOQ fills that gap, if it's just intense action and graphics, G.U. will be in your favor.
And either way, they're not enough. You don't really need real strategies for IMOQ, and the action and graphics GU have are poor...c'mon, the enemy AI SUCKS x-X
I personally don't like any of the 7 .Hack games...they're probably the easiest RPGs i've ever played, and very poor RPGs at that. IMOQ was actually nice, even though fields at one point were too repetitive and tedious, and GU just has an insane number of flaws i'm not even gonna mention. I've never recommended .Hack to any of my friends...mostly because they just like games like Halo or DBZ with alot of action and challenges every once, and .Hack doesn't have any of that at all, and without the story they're plain sucky games that don't entertain the general public at all. .Hack's story is awesome indeed, but i admit it, if it wasn't for that, i wouldn't have played the games at all 'XD

But you also gotta admit, the Data Drain infection rate in IMOQ was problematic, no matter how good of a gamer you were. Like everyone else says about it, "LOTTERY FROM HELL."

That was only noticeable (and dangerous) in only 2 areas in Quarantine, and there was nothing in comparison to it in the whole other 3 games (well, sometimes the Goblin thingies were fun to find out how to beat them :P)...but yeah, i admit it, those 2 12-floor dungeons with nothing but Data Bugs and a few normal monsters every once were so darn complicated and insane but fun XD GU really needed something like that...but the only thing in comparison is beating Outer Bugs while being like 20 levels lower.

And they still didn't seem as hard, or even dangerous

That case would be in IMOQ, the G.U. series makes it ridiculously EASY to level, you can hit the level cap with a few hours of intense training.
I agree that GU is much easier to level than IMOQ (I've played the GU series and I'm on //Mutation in IMOQ; never played it before

) and I can tell the difference, but even GU is tedious at first. And, that's why my friend stopped playing it. .Hack takes a bit of patience.
And as much as I hate to say this, I agree with TheSorrow. The 7 .Hack games are mediocre. The storyline's great, and that's why I read the books/manga, because it's fun to follow, but just too damn repetitive to play. IMOQ's slow battle system doesn't help too much either. The battle system is one thing I love about GU, except for the area border dome thingy, whatever it's called.
Why hasn't .hack been popular?

Is it overshadowed by WoW or Final Fantasy? Or is it because of the series being released in volumes? Or is it just not appealing to others?

Because it's horrible and far too complicated to get as popular as the games you mentioned.

Sounds like me there
I love the games and dont bother my friends into playing them. They did play them though on their own will.

It might just be unpopular since many people just don't know about it...
Like people have already mentioned in previous posts, the storyline is not the best for everyone. It might be too boring for some people.
But, when it comes down to it I still think it's because its just not well known.

It's the convoluted story, and it's slow at first. If you expect to be blown away by over the top action, you're gonna be disappointed. For instance .hack sign, a lot of people will just get turned off because most of it is dialogue at the beginning. They won't get into .hack because of previous or negative experience with the series like IMOQ or .hack sign. I had to grin and bear it for the first several episodes, but the plot picked up midway, and I ended up really liking it. If they want to make it more mainstream, then they would have to "downgrade" the story and put more meaningless action scenes into it.

GameStop is a big sponser of the games. There were posters in the stores and ads put into GameInformer when //Reminisce and //Redemption were released, and they're about the only place I've seen that sells the special edition of //Rebirth.

It could probably have been more popular had Bamco...Well, given it more attention.
While it had a fair bit of advertising, it lacked much exposure to the game press.
Stuff like putting up good trailers or the likes for game media sites, giving exclusives to some news sites and the likes would have given it a lot more attention...
You know, instead of the "oh, it's another JRPG and stuff" attitude they all ended up getting.
More hype among others than just its own fanbase would have helped...But I highly doubt Bamco could pull that off anyway :/

I didnt watch Sign till after I watched Twilight. Thats because Adult Swim was in the middle of the series at the time, then on one of my earlier B-days me and my friends were watching Twilight and we got hooked, mainly Devilkingbaal and I.
The trailers for the G.U game series should of been interesting enough for more fans, especially Volume 1 with the Azure Kite vs Haseo fight. These days it's easier for those who want to get into the series, all they need to do is look it up on sites or watch vids or mangafox.

Yeah...But those trailers usually cater mainly to fans of the old games or fans of the previous games in the GU line.

I don't think so. Each volume of G.U. sold more than the last, at least in Japan. It picked up fans way more than it lost them...
