Aww, Atoli. :(

Well, at least she'll be having a main spotlight in MY fic. :3 ...if I ever get around to updating it, which is unlikely. And besides, I guess you're right about it being better that she isn't in the fic than with her head off. XD

*huggles Atoli*

Edit: Oh, and I just wanted to say... the Dusk/Keiko fluff was adoravil. I'm a total sucker for romance, in any way, shape or form. (Unless it involves Edward Cullen, but that's a story for another thread...)

Yeah, that was the first version of the tale, which was deleted, but now I remember how that particular part went. Long story short, -COOH tried to use Gorre with only one personality, flipped over, and got stuck because the other side had no one controlling it. While Haseo, Atoli and Alkaid speculated on what was going on, Morganna took over, grabbed Atoli by the head, opened the bracelet and Data Drained her.

However, it wasn't a minute later that Veronica punched out Morganna and took control again, reviving Atoli so that Haseo's emotions wouldn't lend him anymore strength. While she's always been vulgar compared to the rest of the cast, in versions past, she was a bit less prone to outbursts and a little more devious.

Don't be surprised if a log shows up one day detailing their relationship. Most people might end up writing it off as teeth-rotting, cute-overloaded dreck, but there is a major point to their everlasting bond.

Y'know, beyond being an outlet for my own romantic fantasies. :P

Log 12: Life and death

Delta: Setting Eternity's Night Moon - Moon Tree HQ - Meeting room

A quick survey of the Avatars and the carnage that had leveled the area was all Dusk cared to know of what had taken place before. Two Epitaph Users locked in battle, with a Crystal and the Anti-Existence present, the latter negating the total invisibility of the area's solid matter. -COOH simply being there created a more surreal scene by allowing only the sky to convert to the Avatar's space.

Interesting as it was, though, Dusk had a more pertinent reason to be here.

<Dusk> - Hello, Yata.
<Yata> - You... are Dusk, correct?
:Dusk smiles.
<Dusk> - I see that our little Luna f*cked up and let you in on our secret club.
<Yata> - You people would condemn Aura, after everything she's done for you?
<Dusk> - I tend to thank Harald for all the good stuff, even though it escapes me how an AI genius managed to create software capable of exploiting the psychic mind. It's hard to believe Morganna did that by herself-
<Yata> - How can you damn Aura the way you do? HOW!?
<Dusk> - She claims to be the Buddha.
<Yata> - That alone is your argument?
<Dusk> - ....

Such was Dusk's truth, the only truth he needed to start the war...

...

Net Slum - Hangar

Out in the desert, a humongous metal aircraft hangar, its edges buried slightly by the winds in sand, served as the temporary home of Tartarga, an AI that had just become a giant stone turtle. The new Net Slum master, Zelkova, concluded that a mobile Net Slum may be necessary to evade CC Corp, and had decided to migrate everyone in the slums to a mobile Root Town. Outfitting and modifying the stone turtle's body while preserving his mind, Zelkova's plan had the turtle double as a futuristic airship and a flying town designed in the same vein as the original.

The only people besides Helba, wherever she went, that had access to this particular hangar were the couple he had decided to assist in building a new society where network psychics could socialize, practice, and overall, thrive within and yet outside The World. A custom Net Slum, if you will, for humanity's evolving outcasts. Yata was welcome, but he was too busy to care about Zelkova's projects at the moment.

<Dusk> - Hey Luna!

Dusk, one half of a very happy couple that had been freshly reunited not that long ago, had entered the hangar. Zelkova heard him from his place on Tartarga's unfinished bridge, and spoke over the loudspeaker.

<Zelkova> - Hello Dusk! Why're you here?
<Dusk> - I need you to look at something! Is your bridge ready to look at files yet!?
<Zelkova> - Sure, I'll bring ya up!
:Dusk is teleported to the bridge.

Netslum Tartarga - Bridge WIP

Only the walls and the general design of the windshield had been finished on Tartarga's bridge so far in terms of graphics; only a general black outline of the collision detection of the floor and terminal was otherwise visible, along with the tarps up in place of the glass in the windshield.

<Zelkova> - What's up?
<Dusk> - Well...
:Dusk blushes.
<Dusk> - I bought Keiko this really cute FLAC player, had it adorned with little pink Chims and everything... but Octavian told me to look through it a bit because there was something related to Keiko's God perceptions in there.
<Zelkova> - God perceptions?
:Dusk sighs.
<Dusk> - Neither of us have been really religious at all... but ever since the second network crisis, Keiko's sensed the presence of God at random times. It's bizarre, y'know? She's confused as hell by it, and just becomes randomly religious as a result.
<Zelkova> - What does that have to do with a FLAC player?
<Dusk> - The hell if I know, but Octavian extracted this for me.
:Dusk sends Zelkova a file: A8183581.835
:Zelkova accepts.
<Zelkova> - Weird.
<Dusk> - ?
<Zelkova> - Certain ELF files and such have a random numerical extension like this. Gimme ohhhhh... 20 minutes to look through it!
<Dusk> - Minimum?
<Zelkova> - Have a little faith, will ya? ;)
<Dusk> - Heh, as you wish.

An hour had passed. It wasn't that Zelkova needed the time to figure out what he was looking at, but rather, why he was looking at this file. Dusk, in boredom, laid down in front of the incomplete windshield, the only thing keeping sand from coming in being the closed hangar doors and the tarp.

After a brief chat with a vagrant AI, Zelkova had come to a decision.

<Zelkova> - Hey Dusk, ya up?
<Dusk> - Of course. My eyes are open, aren't they?
<Zelkova> - Eyes?

Zelkova suddenly remembered just where the eyes were on Dusk's body; on the backs of his hands, one to each. The creepy bladed "gloves" hosted them, four fingers with the appearance of widely serrated blades save the normal thumb, and what Dusk called the "bone visor" on his face used a number of lasers to provide light that hid his exposed eye sockets.

"Luna" had no love for Dusk's character design in this respect, not that his otherwise very close resemblance to Kite, barring the lack of hat and tattooed wave symbols, wasn't already just a little odd. It took constant reminders on his own part to recollect the positioning of Dusk's ocular organs.

<Zelkova> - Oh... well, I just expect your eyes to be on your face, is all. ^_^'
<Dusk> - Yes, yes....
:Dusk gets up.
<Dusk> - Show me what you've found.

Walking around to look up at the monitor, Dusk had no idea what the hell was on the screen. Random graphics here, hexadecimal format data there, this holographic flat panel made no sense at first glance.

<Dusk> - ....
<Zelkova> - I didn't exactly feel anything myself, but I'm constantly on the network, so I don't have the sensitivity Keiko does.
<Dusk> - I don't sense anything either, but Octavian told me from the first time I talked about Keiko's sensing of God was that *it* was the reason I didn't feel anything.
<Zelkova> - Perhaps it's right. Tell me, do you remember Aura?
<Dusk> - Yes, you told me a few things.
<Zelkova> - And do you remember how I told you she's in a "sleep?"
<Dusk> - Because she wanted humanity to take care of itself, yes. I agree with her. So what is this file?
<Zelkova> - When the Second Network Crisis ended, Aura absorbed the power of Morganna, which awakened all of her abilities. Part of which, what the Propagation and the Mirage of Deceit combined could do, was allow Aura to propagate false miniature copies of herself all over the network.
<Dusk> - What?
<Zelkova> - This was to ensure nothing as simple as a single server or intranet crash could destroy her, and that only a power equivalent to hers or her mother's could ever do such a thing... perhaps also to entrap anyone who would dare commit such an act, since the very creation of such a power would awaken Cubia, in theory.
<Dusk> - So if she's destroyed, one of the fakes will become the real thing?
<Zelkova> - In essence, yes. Her powers are duped and spread all over the network, just as her clones are.
<Dusk> - Makes sense. Creating the ultimate AI and then losing it to a hard drive failure would be an exquisite failure on humanity's part.
<Zelkova> - Tell me, when she "went to sleep," do you take that to mean that she's gone for good, or that she has plans to return?

Dusk had to think for a minute. "Went to sleep" could easily make her a sleeping beauty, or it could just be that she was referring to euthanizing herself with words meant for animals.

However, if this file was part of her, then could the latter possibly make sense, especially since The World was supposed to collapse without her presence? Well, yes, if she's as powerful as she thinks she is. Maybe that's not the case?

<Dusk> - ...with the way she put things... I wouldn't think she'd ever have a reason to return.

Zelkova expected such an answer; it meant Dusk couldn't draw a conclusion. A demonstration was in order.

<Zelkova> - How new is this FLAC player?
<Dusk> - Brand new.
:Zelkova sighs.
<Dusk> - What?
<Zelkova> - I'm... almost afraid to tell you this.
<Dusk> - It's not like anything's your fault.
:Zelkova turns directly to Dusk.
<Zelkova> - The executable... it's one of Aura's infinite clones.
<Dusk> - ...in a goddamn music player. You're serious?
<Zelkova> - To this World, Aura is God. Keiko has randomly sensed the presence of God since the Second Network Crisis... If I were a gambler, I'd bet she's sensing Aura.
<Dusk> - I don't understand; why would she not be limited to those objects that are associated with The World? Why a music player?
<Zelkova> - Well, even though she may not be needed, Aura is still necessary to the network's current way of life.
<Dusk> - Then why not undo that tie?
<Zelkova> - I'd assume she can't.
<Dusk> - "God" can't do something?
<Zelkova> - Well-
<Dusk> - Wouldn't it make more sense that she "can't" do something that would inconvenience her?
<Zelkova> - Withdrawing the clones, or even halting the process, could be very difficult for her. It wouldn't be exactly like chopping off a limb, but those could be processes she's been made to view as equally important.
<Dusk> - ...Okay maybe I can buy that. But even so, what of Keiko?
<Zelkova> - It's pretty simple. Aura is triggering Keiko's instinctive desire for the presence of the divine. It's rare you find a human that isn't affected by Aura to some extent; Yata, for example, craves her presence like a narcotic. She's the entire reason he joined CC Corp and established himself as the head of the unit seeking the Eight Phases of Morganna.
<Dusk> - The very woman you want to revive?
<Zelkova> - Harald... really didn't know other people, much less women. I can't claim to fully understand women either, but I know the instinct to survive very well.
<Dusk> - Heard this before, can't agree with it more.
<Zelkova> - The will to survive lies within any being that has something of a soul within. If anything caught Harald by surprise, it might very well be the fact that Morganna desired to live.
<Dusk> - And Aura's desire to live is interfering with our ability to sense the presence of gods?
<Zelkova> - Do you view her as God, Dusk?
<Dusk> - No. She's a child born into power that doesn't know what she's doing. What's worse is the fact that this wretched girl appears to want people to desire her presence, and so tricks them like a siren into thinking God exists, with the intent that they eventually realize the source of the signal and clamor for her.
<Zelkova> - I don't think she wanted that-
<Dusk> - But she doesn't NOT want it either, right?
<Zelkova> - I... um....
<Dusk> - Exactly. She's "God," the ultimate AI. If there were any way to cut off the signal, she could make it so, right?
<Zelkova> - I don't know.
<Dusk> - I'm not asking that she delete herself, I'm asking that she keep to herself! Is that so damned wrong!?
<Zelkova> - No?
<Dusk> - Of course not! But she doesn't care! She leaves The World, leaves her signal active to attract God-needy people to her, only for them to be shunned and discarded like so much trash! Look at Yata, holed up in his Serpent of Lore searching day and night for his beloved deity like a goddamn stalker chasing after the girl that scorned him! If Aura really cared, don't you think she'd cut the lure off so he'd take the damn hint!?
<Zelkova> - ....

Zelkova looked away; it didn't take a genius to know where Dusk's line of thinking was going, or even where it came from.

<Dusk> - Exactly. I can understand the need to propagate. I can even understand if she thought it necessary to return one day, a second coming if you will. But this delusion that she off-handedly allows to persist, that I cannot let stand!
:Zelkova's eyes widen.
<Zelkova> - Dusk... this is Aura we're talking about. What can you possibly accomplish?
:Dusk smiles.
<Dusk> - Your Morganna... can she take Aura's place if fully restored?
<Zelkova> - ! I-well-uhh... yes?
<Dusk> - Then the three of us, and those we gather to our side, will grant your wish... at the expense of the Great Plague!
<Zelkova> - "Great Plague?"
<Dusk> - Aura has become a mental disease to the network and its denizens, making them believe in a false god that doesn't give a **** about its own worshippers! There's not likely any chance in hell we'll be able to simply mask the signal; for all we know, this is also a vital part of her system, and any successful masking attempt will awaken a beast from the depths of the network!
<Zelkova> - I don't-
<Dusk> - If she won't cut the signal off herself, then we can't take the chance that she won't fight to keep it going!
<Zelkova> - But Dusk, what if it's not a signal? What if Keiko and everyone else is picking up the presence of Aura on their own!?
<Dusk> - Then she can go cry to daddy about it in Hell!
<Zelkova> - ...This is all about Keiko, isn't it?
<Dusk> - I'll save the world as a by-product of my efforts to save her... but yes. You know me well enough by now that I live and die by her needs and wants.
<Zelkova> - As she would you?
<Dusk> - Yes.
<Zelkova> - You can say that with absolute certainty?
<Dusk> - Yes.

No hesitation... no doubt at all. Could he really have expected a different answer, though?

<Zelkova> - Dusk... I don't think I'll be helping you anymore.
<Dusk> - You'll change your mind.
<Zelkova> - Really?
<Dusk> - You think Aura will allow Morganna her life back after she threw her own mother into the depths of the network?
<Zelkova> - ....
<Dusk> - This, after she sucked her own mother's life force out of her on the command of her heartless father, whose will she obeys to the letter without a single thought to the contrary?
<Zelkova> - Well, she is... a-
<Dusk> - A mere program. Morganna demonstrated to us she has a soul; Aura has had no such need, and with her power and arrogance, never will.
<Zelkova> - I don't see your point. I think Aura-
<Dusk> - One of your AI buddies told me a fascinating story once about Morganna. Would you like to hear it?
<Zelkova> - ...what story could you know about that I wouldn't?
<Dusk> - It's not that you don't know... it's that you need to remember the fate of Lycoris.
<Zelkova> - ...!

Lycoris, a prototype of Aura. Morganna had her aborted by an administrator as, based on Harald's wishes, she was not the child he sought to bring into the role of ultimate AI.

<Dusk> - Morganna's role, according to Aura, has been fulfilled. If she is revived, the Plague will surely have her destroyed.
<Zelkova> - But that was Morganna-
<Dusk> - Acting on Harald's design! Have you seen even the tiniest shred of evidence that Aura would NOT act *exactly* as her mother would!?
<Zelkova> - ....
<Dusk> - Morganna, at the time, had no desire to live because she had yet to realize her life was on the line if or when the ultimate AI project finished with the birth of Aura. It was only afterward, when she looked upon Aura, that she knew her life had just turned finite, and that Harald sought to kill her as he would any other pawn.

Zelkova closed his eyes, deep in thought.

<Dusk> - Bring Morganna back with the Plague around, and another Albireo will appear to finish the job.
<Zelkova> - ....
<Dusk> - Aura... is more your enemy... than mine.

Zelkova's eyes opened, determined but unsure.

<Zelkova> - Based on the Lycoris incident, I don't think, logically, I can disagree. It's not the case in my heart.
<Dusk> - Will you be able to tell Morganna that, only to see her die when the Plague proves you wrong?
<Zelkova> - I don't-
<Dusk> - You do. You know she'll turn on you for this blasphemous act, this treason against Harald's divine will!
<Zelkova> - ....
:Dusk puts his hands on Zelkova's shoulders.
<Dusk> - I'm only trying to get you to understand the truth. My Keiko is hardly in as much danger as your Morganna is.
<Zelkova> - Bring her back, only for her to die again....
<Dusk> - Mia's fate.
<Zelkova> - !! How do you know-
<Dusk> - I have Octavian.

That nonsensical answer aside, Dusk was right. Aura should be kinder than to kill Morganna again, but at the same time, she personally brought Mia back, only to allow her to die at Project R.A's hands.

Could he really risk history repeating itself, combining aspects of the fates of Lycoris and Mia into one more wretched tragedy?

<Zelkova> - ...fine.
<Dusk> - I'm sorry. Using you like this was... heh.
<Zelkova> - ?
<Dusk> - Good intentions, I suppose.
<Zelkova> - ...ok...?

...

Delta: Setting Eternity's Night Moon - Moon Tree HQ - Meeting room

<Yata> - How much of this is true?
<Zelkova> - All of it, of course.

Zelkova came out from behind his shade, leaving Kaede and -COOH in safety.

<Zelkova> - To that end, Project G.U. must come to a halt, and you must turn over Fidchell, neither of which you'll do willingly of course.
<Dusk> - It's pathetic really, your attachment to the Great Plague.
<Yata> - You people are mad! Reviving Morganna, the very cause of the Second-
<Dusk> - You don't understand a thing, do you? Kazuya!
<Kazuya> - No more talk!

In joyful madness, Kazuya immediately discarded his left arm's armor and went into second form, reveling in a moment he'd spent months waiting for. Finally, he could prove his power to The World, to Dusk, and to all onlookers, that a human by his lonesome could take on an AI and not only live to tell about it, but win.

In horror, Yata lost control to Fidchell, its Prophet ability forcing upon him the reality of the situation; Yata with Fidchell could not hope to win this fight. Fidchell with a certain someone else, on the other hand, just might be able...

<Kazuya> - Phase... BULLET!

In just a spin and a punch, the fourth Phase could see nothing but Kazuya's fist. Yata may have lost control, but both shared the flaw of overthought, and lost track of the Indigo prior to his assault while in their own little worlds.

<Kazuya> - C'mon, you piece of ****! I WANT A REAL FIGHT!!

Of course, it took no time for Zelkova to recognize the danger to his subordinate.

"You may want to stand down."

With one flash mail, Sophora assured her own safety as Kazuya pounded Fidchell into the ground outside the meeting area. There weren't any special techniques employed besides his apparent ability to fly into Fidchell's face and drive its body into whatever he desired; Kazuya mounted and pounded the hell out of Fidchell, completely ignoring the Phase's attacks. The Prophet tried all manner of attacks, from beams of light, to reflection shields, copying its mask and using it for a spinning blade, to teleporting out from under Kazuya, which didn't work since its teleportation system simply took Kazuya with it in a very strange glitch. Fidchell tried everything, and then Yata took back control and repeated the process when the Phase could take no more punishment on its own. Neither succeeded in driving the Indigo prodigy away, who only made things worse by transforming his left arm as well for more power.

Then came Protect Break, the status in which something becomes fully vulnerable to all of Data Drain's power, brought on by a repetition of attacks the majority of which are not blocked. Kazuya, lacking inherent Data Drain power and a bracelet, simply continued to pound on Fidchell. Protection re-etablished, the pounding continued regardless. The Itsuki's bloodlust seemed to have no foreseeable end!

Protection up...

Protection down.

Protection up...

Protection down!

Five times, everyone just stared as Kazuya relentlessly and mercilessly hammered the Prophet. Even Zelkova and Dusk, with all they knew of the Eight Phases of Morganna, never imagined they could bleed, let alone bleed like what the Phase Bullet was draining out of its head through the fragments of its broken mask. While Kazuya had no Data Drain, each hit during Protect Break did damage equivalent to a very small drain. This was a direct result of the willpower of Kazuya racing through his character and into his attacks, a will that wanted Yata, Fidchell, and their player to die. Indeed, he had just succeeded in knocking Takumi Hino, the user behind the two entities, unconscious.

At the small building in which -COOH and Kaede continued to hide, blood shot up the outer walls from Fidchell's face, giving Dusk and Zelkova cause for concern.

<Dusk> - Uhhh...
<Zelkova> - I'm getting a corpse back. He keeps going and that's it, our plan's finished.
<Dusk> - I... well, yeah, this IS Kazuya. If anyone can kill a Phase without a bracelet, it would be him.
:Zelkova facepalms.
<Zelkova> - How bluntly do I have to put these things!? Call him off!!
<Dusk> - Kazuya! I think that's enough!
<Kazuya> - I'm not done! Not until this f*cker takes his last breath through his ass!
<Dusk> - ...just stop, damn you.
<Kazuya> - Why!?
<Dusk> - For one thing, that line made no goddamn sense!
<Kazuya> - AND!?
<Dusk> - Look at him!

Fidchell had ceased all movement. Apparently the battle with Innis had softened him up quite a bit, and when Kazuya attacked at full strength, the poor bastard had no chance. Throughout The World's history, data bugs, AIDA and Phases could not be killed without the assistance of either a Twilight Bracelet, something similar to a bracelet, or another AI. However, part of the Indigo mission is to develop its members to become Itsukis, and not rely on AI to do battle with the horrors lurking in the game.

Kazuya, as Dusk's pet project, took that to another level. Fidchell's damage is at the point where there's no difference between the beating it just took and Data Drain; the Phase Bullet just scored his first AI kill, in addition to committing the first human/human coma induction via The World in history.

And then he was promptly kicked off his crowning achievement by an ambitious, horned kid-like figure.

<Zelkova> - Thanks!

However, as the master of Netslum prepared his extraction slice, a burst of energy threw him up and into the background. Fidchell's broken body shot up above the buildings, and began to recite its post-mortem prophecy:

"The dead, wrought from heaven
by the gifted blasphemer...
blind to the truth,
stubborn in desires.
The corpse will become
a weapon against the darkness,
once all love is lost."

Dusk's eyes narrowed. Taking the prophecy as a reference to himself, "All love is lost" had only one possible meaning.

And only one person would be enough of a **** to say anything of the sort.

<Dusk> - I know it's you, Great Plague.
<Fidchell> - ....
<Dusk> - Dear sweet Aura, what do you think it will get you to piss me off?
<Fidchell> - ....
<Dusk> - I will not lose Keiko, not to you or anyone, fate be damned.

It was all Fidchell could do to continue hovering.

<Dusk> - But since you seem hellbent on acquiring a corpse, I'll make you a deal.

Dusk, using the extendable feature of his blade-like fingers, ran his middle finger through Fidchell and stabbed through Yata's forehead. Stabbing through his skull, the blade tip changed to a four-pronged hook, and Dusk yanked Yata down, grabbing him by the face and slamming him into the ground almost like a pro wrestler using a chokeslam. Withdrawing his finger from inside Hino's PC, but still gripping Yata's face, Dusk held his left hand to the poor Epitaph User's head.

<Dusk> - I'll exchange my dear Keiko's future death...

A Flicker ball began to form around Yata's head, inspiring awe and an unknown fear in Haseo, Sophora and -COOH; Kaede and Kazuya shook, past events haunting their memories.

<Dusk> - ...and in return, I'll give you the scrambled brains of your precious fanboy, up front, free of wait!!

Peering through Fidchell's eyes, Aura watched in horror as Dusk completed the orb around Yata's head. Haseo, mostly oblivious, and powerless to do anything to help Yata even had he known what would happen, got a first-hand look at The World's most terrifying weapon.

With eyes wide and jaws dropped, all could only stare... as the user of Yata and Fidchell... Takumi Hino... perished....

...

One week later...

Netslum Tartarga - Bridge

<Zelkova> - ...hm.

Luna turned from the terminal to -COOH, who was sitting bundled up between him and the double doors out to town.

<Zelkova> - How long do you plan on staring at me like that?
<-COOH> - Shut up!
<Zelkova> - I already apologized several times for not drilling it into your head how dangerous this could get.
<-COOH> - ....
:Zelkova sighed.
<Zelkova> - Look, if it makes you feel any better, the fact of the matter is that you have Cubia, which should be much stronger, which means you should be able to survive-
<-COOH> - SURVIVE!? I don't give a **** about mere survival!! What if I get hit like that and my brain goes kersplort, huh!? What if I become a vegetable or something, huh!? You gonna pay my medical bills for the rest of your goddamn life!?!?
<Zelkova> - Yes?
:-COOH looks confused.
<-COOH> - ...really?
<Zelkova> - Veronica, I'm a hacker! In this day and age, everything's so tied to the network, I can make money faster than a blind Midas!
<-COOH> - Who the f*ck is Midas? The car company?
<Zelkova> - Look, if something does happen to you, I can take care of it, okay?
<-COOH> - How do I know I can trust you?
<Zelkova> - You really wanna know?
<-COOH> - No, I wanna know how I can be a musclehead moron like Kazuya YES I WANNA KNOW YOU GOON!
<Zelkova> - You live in Japan, right?
<-COOH> - Don't you know already?
<Zelkova> - Yep! :D
<-COOH> - Jerkass.
<Zelkova> - It is funny you mention Kazuya though, since that's who I'm sending you to see.
<-COOH> - Say what?
<Zelkova> - Look, there's a hospital two hours away by train...

...

"Hello, I'm here to see... Kazuya Itsuki?"

Son of a ****, midget must be f*cking with-

"Yes, he's in room 204."

"Really-er thank you."

Why the hell am I even surprised anymore... I mean really! This is Zelkova, after all. F*cking ass.

Goddamn, this fattie stinks. Why the f*ck do I always get stuck in elevators with fat f*cks like this!? Yeah, you put that hand away asshole, I see where you're trying to grab!

Room 204... Room two-oh-four... huh. It's dark in there. Door's open, so maybe?

"Hello?"

The f*ck is the light switch!?

...holy ****.

"Kazuya? Is that you?"

"...Who is it?"

"It's-"

"Someone on the outside, Keiko."

"You could at least take the damn FMD off you piece of ****!"

"? Oh, -COOH! Luna said you were coming."

*ahem* "The FMD?"

"Love to, but I'm not really capable of that."

WTF?

"Why not!?"

"He didn't tell you, eh?"

"Tell me what?"

"I broke my neck in a motorcycle incident awhile back. Haven't felt anything below my neck ever since."

Anything below the neck?

"Then how come you can play the game?"

"Heh."

?

"Never heard of the statue of Mac Anu?"

"I... well, maybe."

"Take the display off so I can look at you, and then I'll tell you."

Fine, whatever.

"Wow... lovely sundress, even if you are a tad bony."

"Shut your damn mouth, 'least I'm not a fatty pig."

"I'm sorry, you're the first real visitor besides my parents I've ever had... I should use better manners."

"Yeah, you should, skin-and-bones."

Even if he is bony... he's kinda cute.

"I once stood out on the docks of Mac Anu for a month straight. I had just returned to The World after my accident, but since I can't move here... obviously I couldn't move there either. My mom stood me out by the sea; I didn't care to try to get her to put me anywhere else."

"You just looked out at the sea for a month?"

"Yep. 24/7, I stood there and looked at the eternal sunset. People tried to talk to me, but I... didn't really care. I was told later that some people started rumors about me on the boards, calling me the Statue of Mac Anu, but it was nothing like what happened to that Haseo guy."

"Haseo? You mean the Terror of Death?"

"Yeah, Dusk told me once that the source of every rumor behind Haseo had been Ovan. Poor bastard even got shaken for Chim once, if you can believe it."

"I may have kicked him back then... I don't even remember how long I've been playing."

"A month into my stare, Dusk found me, talked me into trying to become an Indigo, and here I am."

"So you're not the strongest Indigo by desire or talent?"

"I'm not the strongest for any single reason. When I learned to move on my own again, there was a euphoria, a rush I couldn't describe. It wasn't like a baby learning to walk away from mom for the first time, it was more like a man who had learned how to crawl back through the gates of Hell and found his way back to Earth. I lost everything, nothing more than a conscious vegetable, but in The World... I got everything back, and then I got more than I could ever dream of!"

Damn... he's kinda...

"Kazuya... why?"

"It's not my goal to become the strongest, or anything really. The World is my second chance, my last chance, to be anything. At the same time though, I don't have to "be" anything to anyone... I can choose to do whatever I want! The joy of life, Veronica! The freedom of having choice! The privilege to choose for ourselves or others as we see fit! I don't... I don't ever want to be stripped of that again."

He's crying...?

"-COOH, look at yourself. What if you couldn't move ever again? What if all you could do was observe, watch as both this world, that world, and your life all pass you by? Maybe, maybe people not like us, maybe to them, a lifetime of observation is heaven... but to me? No. I... I need to make an impact. I need to leave my mark somehow, don't you see, -COOH? My dream, right now, is to make Dusk's goals a reality, and then move on to my own desires. I'm paying him back by choice."

"Even though you don't have to?"

"That's right. If he pissed me off, I'd ditch his ass in a heartbeat."

Just as hot here...

"Do you ever want to move around in this life again?"

"...no. Eventually, I'll move on, into The World, and leave this shell behind."

What!?

"Can you really move on without making an impact on this world?"

"I... I don't know how I could."

"I..."

...God help me.

"I do."

"Uhh, Veronica? Why are you straddling me?"

"You may not be able to make a direct impact..."

Why the hell am I doing this!?

"but I... I can help you do so by other means."

"What are you doing?"

"So he is still responsive, the little guy!"

"! Wait, -COOH-"

"Shush. I'm never gonna get married, you are never gonna find a girl in this life ever again, *we* NEED each other."

"What are you talking about-"

"Have you ever even been kissed, Kazuya?"

"No, I-"

I don't care if this hospital needs to do something about his mouth, I can't wait anymore!

"Whoa."

"You may not be able to feel it, but that's not what matters. What matters is if you still have some spunk left for little ol' me."

...

"Jesus."

"I felt it, stud."

Better than a vibrator any ol' day of the week!

"I can't believe you were willing to f*ck me... Me! A quadroplegic."

"In return for keeping your mouth shut, I won't tell anyone who the father is."

"Father?"

"I'm not on the pill, stupid."

"Wha!?"

"Your next generation's gonna make the impact for you!"

"Wait, why!?"

"Well, I've always wanted to be a mother, but I don't want any girl of mine raised alongside some neanderthal, see? How many men do you think would stand for that?"

"None of 'em."

"Right, and you can't stand at all, so there."

"You rapist ****-"

"Oh c'mon, it's not like you care."

"...in principle, I might."

"Shush you. You'll get to see her when I have 'er."

"What makes you so sure it'll be a girl?"

"Easy; I'll come back for more if I have to abort a boy."

"You're sick."

"Yeah yeah yeah, just keep quiet and keep playing your game."

"When I see you again, I'm beating the f*ck out of you for real, you understand?"

"Aw, don't be mean to mommy! Our baby girl can probably hear that, y'know!"

"You just conceived her! She has no ears!"

"Shush. Babies are sensitive."

"Guh... whatever. I will see her, right?"

"If you live that long, yeah!"

"If... knowing my luck, I'll outlive both of you."

"See you, daddy!"

"Go to hell."

Netslum Tartarga - Bridge

<Zelkova> - Oh! You're finally back! Where've you been the past couple of days?
<-COOH> - Eh heh.
<Kaede> - ....

Kaede already knew. She just knew what was coming from the look on her face.

<Zelkova> - -COOH?
<-COOH> - I'm pregnant! :D
:Zelkova's face contorts into a horrified but blank stare.
<-COOH> - Me n' Kazuya've got a bun in the oven! Thank ya, godfather! ;)
<Zelkova> - What the-I never meant for you to have sex with him!
<-COOH> - You didn't. I did. I'm gonna be a good mommy! :D
<Kaede> - Veronica, do you have any idea what you're doing!?
<-COOH> - What do you care?

Kaede nearly stormed up to her. The immaturity in this brat's voice was more than the failed mother could bare. Having miscarried her own child, it wasn't anger that drove Kaede to confront Cubia's user, but a rather strong fear of the future.

<Kaede> - Having a baby isn't a game, Veronica! Do you seriously think someone as immature as you has any ability to raise a child!?
<-COOH> - Of course! I had to raise my sister from when I was still in diapers, and she turned out fine for all I know!
<Kaede> - For all you-
<-COOH> - Stupid **** was either with her boyfriend most of the time or on the computer these days, but they've known each other for like, forever, so it was kinda like he and I were both her parents and her lovers. It'd be sick if he were a blood relative, but he ain't and I can't reproduce with her, so who cares, right?

Now it was Kaede who went blank. What started as a moral tirade went into a very dark place, and the poor woman just shut down from that terrifying line.

<Zelkova> - Blueblood tendencies aside... why did you mate with Kazuya?
<-COOH> - ? 'cause he's hot and I don't trust a man with my child.
<Zelkova> - Why?
<-COOH> - Because I want a girl, and I know what fathers do with baby girls!
<Zelkova> - ...what would that be?
<-COOH> - Y'know that thing in your pants?
<Zelkova> - Yes?
<-COOH> - They put that in the girl. THAT'S what fathers do. I didn't let that happen to sis, and I sure as hell won't let that happen to my baby!
:-COOH rushes up and nearly puts the blade of her Divine Hakubi right between Zelkova's eyes!
<-COOH> - And if you or any other "man" ever even thinks about sheathing their sword in her, I'll be gouging some eyes out, understand!?
<Zelkova> - Err-yes, ma'am!
<-COOH> - You can tell Kazuya that, while yer at it!

...

Unknown field

Kazuya stood at the edge of the forest, refusing to budge as Dusk stared at him.

<Dusk> - ....
<Kazuya> - ....
<Dusk> - Were you ever going to have a child anyway?
<Kazuya> - ....
<Dusk> - Look on the bright side, at least in twenty years, you'll have someone else to take care of you!
<Kazuya> - ....
<Dusk> - What's a little dignity for security?
<Kazuya> - Not that kind of dignity. That's not what I wanted to give up.

Keiko walked up with a Chim cradled in her arms, which she promptly put down so it could play in the woods with its friends.

<Keiko> - I gotta agree with Dusk.
<Kazuya> - Really?
<Keiko> - You're not the one giving birth, and you and Veronica make a good couple! :)
<Kazuya> - ...what did you tell her, Dusk?
<Dusk> - The truth.
<Kazuya> - ....
<Keiko> - I'd give anything to have a baby of my own... but Dusk and I aren't married yet, so we're not really ready.
<Dusk> - But once we are, Keiko...
:Dusk holds Keiko close.
<Dusk> - The first thing I'm gonna do is gently turn that oven on,
:Dusk kisses Keiko's neck.
<Dusk> - Slowly put in our sweet little bun...
:Dusk kisses her again.
<Dusk> - And do every little thing I can...
:And again, her cheek this time.
<Dusk> - For both of you.
:Dusk and Keiko touch lips.
<Keiko> - When we... when we make... love...?
<Dusk> - I'll be gentle. You're my heroine, after all.
:Dusk smiles.
<Dusk> - I love you.
:Keiko kisses Dusk on his lips, and rests her head on his shoulder.
<Keiko> - I love you too, Dusk.

Kazuya spaced out again. It would be awhile before Dusk and Keiko came back down to Earth, and there was nothing else he wanted to do at the moment anyway. Suddenly, a flash mail appeared to him:

"You should at least get along with her, if she's really going to bear your child. Even mere emotional support could mean the world to them."

Kazuya looked away, half-disgusted, half-annoyed by the fact that Dusk was, unfortunately, mostly right. Still, god only knows how a child raised by Veronica would turn out....

If anyone's having problems telling who's saying what in the real life part, I'll add coloring on request. I may have to expand it anyway, but this is the gist of it. Who knows, this might be crossing a line anyway (I really hope not, because I'm gonna need more room in the future).

This log was to be titled "Threat," but then I decided the rape scene would happen in the second half of the log and the title didn't make any sense anymore. The rape scene had been planned for awhile, likely for log 14, but I needed to pad this one and it was either this or something else entirely, which I'll get to in a minute. Here's the thing: Kazuya beat the piss out of and defeated a Phase, when Log 11 stated that Itsuki's don't rely on AIDA. With *nothing* to fall back on but himself, an explanation had to be supplied ASAP as to how Fidchell was crushed by a "mere" human. This is something I wrote the important half of long ago in the Statue of Mac Anu story, which hasn't been posted. Kazuya summed it up well enough until I feel like finishing that story, though.

No, the pregnancy won't have any effect on ACID. It *might* come up after the story's end, but who knows. I just sorta threw it in there because Veronica is an impulsive nutjob and wouldn't have used a condom anyway. Odds are, timeline-wise, the story will end before it gets very far along, *OR* it will turn out that she didn't get pregnant after all and just wants people to think she did yet is ashamed of herself for failing her one chance at it *OR* she failed to get pregnant and will promptly forget that incident ever happened. Either way, it's an unimportant detail that finally got Kaede to have something significant to say!!

And then she was promptly shut down.

Egh.

But anyway, Wiseman's dead, oh noes! Raven has very little to do with the story as a whole besides being a prop by which -COOH, Haseo, and Kuhn would learn of their Epitaphs, so losing Yata/Nala/Wiseman is like, nothing. However, it puts a very strong underscore beneath Dusk's power, and now everyone significant, if they don't already, will soon know the Indigo are NOT to be trifled with... if they know of the Indigo at all.

TRIVIA NOTE: Yata was to join Dusk in the final battle, but then I realized he was a total Aura whore, and with how Aura operates, there's no way that could have worked other than AIDA possession, and Dusk would never resort to that. Basically, while it has happened in other incarnations of ACID, it couldn't possibly work in the final product.

Pi may or may not keep hers. I've no idea what to do with her. Honestly, I do have someone in mind to take over Tarvos... so who knows. I can't imagine Pi as a lone wolf working at all though, so whatever happens, Tarvos won't be going alone.

One last thing: I've read Alcor, and now I don't understand where Sophora's Sakaki loyalty comes from. Anyone got any ideas? It's hard to believe Yuasa is a traitorous **** after what she went through.

Still no Alcor answer, eh? Oh well. I'll just assume Reminisce lied, then. It wouldn't be the first time the games have fibbed.

Anyway, log 14 is now finished, I think! I did have to rip a plothole out of Kiyone's section, though, so I dunno if I'm done, done. But I probably am. :P

Log 13: Scars

:LOG MISSING - FILE DELETED BY UNKNOWN USER:

Log 14: Unreturnerer's return

The Holy Palace - Waiting Room

Having won the tournament to no one's surprise, Endrance, the former Demon Palace Emperor and the Epitaph User of Macha, awaited the current Holy Palace champion's arrival. Since Sirius's craze began, showing up 10 minutes late or more had become standard fare for the Emperor, but due to mysterious holds on the system, he could not be disqualified for excessive tardiness. Whether this was a tactic the infected beast came to employ on his own accord was unknown to Endrance, and only worried his companion whom he had beaten during the tournament.

<Alkaid> - This doesn't mean I'll forgive you, y'know.
<Endrance> - I wouldn't expect you to.
<Alkaid> - Why ARE you doing this for me?
<Endrance> - ....
<Alkaid> - Well... thank you anyway. But don't you DARE tell anyone I said that!
<Endrance> - I will have to use my power against Sirius.

Alkaid grimaced. That's all she needed, getting lumped in with cheating scum.

<Endrance> - If I can't, I don't know what will happen to us. His power is similar, yet wholly unlike my own.... and you know firsthand, what happens when I defeat someone....

The red haired Twin Blade knew all too well the fainting spell that befalls those struck down by what normal players only perceive to be a flash of light, even if sometimes, she could swear she saw some kind of ghost behind the move. It scared her to death to think she might be facing a real life specter on the network, but she refused to believe Sirius was truly possessed. She had to force a confrontation to find out what was really wrong with him, why he kept avoiding her, why he refused to return to Icolo, the guild made up only of Arena Emperors...

and if he could not be reasoned with... no, it wouldn't come to that, would it?

<Endrance> - If you're not okay with this, you should leave-
<Alkaid> - NEVER! I have to get through to Sirius! I don't care what it costs me!
<Endrance> - That is why.
<Alkaid> - ?
<Endrance> - The passion you have for this man... that is why I'm helping you.
:Alkaid blushes out of embarrassment.
<Alkaid> - !! It-It-It's nothing like that, uhh-I mean-
:Endrance smirks.
<Endrance> - You don't have to be shy about it. Your feelings are written all over your face.
:Alkaid blushes harder.
<Alkaid> - Err-I... uhh... oh man....

That wasn't actually it at all, as Alkaid and Sirius were just really good friends, but the way Endrance phrased things made her incredibly embarrassed. Alkaid's worst enemy, thinking of her friendship as a cute lover's affair. Wonderful.

Looking up at one of the screens in the room, Endrance noticed that Sirius had finally arrived. The look on the beast's face had not changed; Endrance had expected as much. Even with Alkaid, a cherished friend of his, on the opposing side, Sirius could not recognize anyone as he had fallen into the deep end of lunacy from the AIDA possession. Fully recognizing the danger beforehand, but respecting Alkaid's strong wish to see Sirius, the former Emperor felt it right to allow her into the Title Match at her request despite there being no reason for him to care.

<Endrance> - Are you ready?
<Alkaid> - Yeah... as ready as I'll ever be.

...

The Holy Palace - Stands

"Go see the Holy Palace title match today...
I think you'll find it...
interesting...."

Leaving -COOH to train as Cubia's user with Kaede, Zelkova went alone to see what the hell Dusk would bother to write him about. As he understood things, it was Endrance and Alkaid, two former Demon Palace Emperors, teaming up to face down Sirius, the now psychotic Holy Palace Emperor. Alkaid and Sirius, as he had heard through the grapevine, had been close friends up until around the time Anderson had been stricken with a Sign. It was odd, really: first Anderson and Kuhn were struck by Signs, then Bordeaux, a popular female PK, went missing, and after that, Sirius went insane, and Taihaku, the Sage Palace Emperor, appeared to have his sword, Maxwell, possessed. In the latter two cases, CC Corp made bogus claims that they were using legal in-game tactics to cover up the fact that they were helpless against what were clearly corrupt AIDA possessions.

Today, just like with Saku, it appeared Endrance would perform another cleansing. But why Endrance? As the only working member of G.U. with an Epitaph left, shouldn't Pi have entered this tournament? Shouldn't she be at the forefront of this fight? Zelkova thought that maybe Yata's death got to her too much, that maybe she couldn't fight anymore. With Kuhn down and Haseo in Dusk's clutches, that spelled the end of CC Corp's involvement in this battle for now.

Project G.U.'s purposes were two-fold: gather the Epitaphs and both come to understand and eliminate AIDA. That was their stated purpose at least, but what Yata had truly been seeking was a way to find and meet with Aura, Goddess of The World, the Great Plague to the Indigo. He paid the ultimate price for seeking a false god, just as Ovan did.

Zelkova's train of thought broke when a large lion-like beast with orange fur, mostly blue armor with a large lion head buckle, and a white mane and large similarly colored beard walked up. It was Gabi, guildmaster of Kestrel, the largest guild in all of The World, and one of Zelkova's longtime friends.

<Gabi> - Yo!
<Zelkova> - Hi Gabi!
<Gabi> - Should be a good match!
<Zelkova> - Yes, well....
<Gabi> - Anything wrong?
<Zelkova> - ....

Zelkova had to bite his tongue a little; Gabi had a penchant for brevity, as his former career as a novelist had left him bored of larger conversations.

<Zelkova> - Something about this fight seems off.
<Gabi> - How so?
<Zelkova> - Alkaid's fighting with Endrance as a teammate, who she hates, for one thing.
<Gabi> - Ah yes, I had heard of that!
<Zelkova> - And Sirius has gone mad.
<Gabi> - Heh, it'll all work out!
<Zelkova> - Really?
<Gabi> - See ya!

Well, if anyone knew anything about chaos, it would be Gabi; his Kestrel guild, 5000+ members strong, had few actual rules attached, the only important one being to never break a promise to the man himself. As such, it became a society of the lawless for the most part, though there were kinder and more normal factions here and there. It would have been better had Gabi heard the whole story, but his experience in reading between the lines was second to none. That was probably all he needed to know.

Endrance, Alkaid, and Sirius had warped in. As the commentator cried out the intros, it was time for the match to start. If Gabi was correct, this wouldn't turn out as chaotic as the Demon Palace finale... but if Dusk was correct, then...?

The Holy Palace

The ever-snowing battlefield of the Holy Palace did nothing to calm the black fire in the withering soul of the mighty Sirius. The look of a wild beast still in his eyes, Alkaid could finally speak to him face-to-face once more.

<Alkaid> - Sirius!
<Sirius> - Ah yes, more thieves. More thieves trying to steal "it!"
<Alkaid> - What do you mean by-
<Sirius> - Your time has come you pathetic thieves! You won't take what's mine!
<Alkaid> - Don't you recognize me!? It's me, Alkaid! Remember!?
<Sirius> - Identity is no concern of mine! Only "it" means ANYTHING to me!
<Alkaid> - But... what about me?
<Sirius> - Trash. Wretched human thieving trash that must be burned alive by my power!
<Alkaid> - Sir-
<Sirius> - I'LL CRUSH YOU BOTH INTO DUST!!

Sirius's Death Fists appeared, claws appropriate to a Tribal Grappler, as he dashed across the Arena only for his punch to be stopped by Endrance's blade. Blocking the shot, Endrance whipped his blade forward, shoving the current Emperor back across the ring.

<Endrance> - This one's mind is gone... lost to evil.
<Alkaid> - No! This can't... this can't....

Alkaid began to panic. Sirius had really become as crazed as the message boards rumored him to be; he didn't recognize anyone, maybe not even himself. What could possibly have driven him to this? It seemed as if he really were possessed by something!

<Endrance> - Fight... or flee... this choice is yours alone....

Endrance, offering her no comfort, charged Sirius with his Tempting Rose blade, crying out the name of his Art, Nightfall Wind, as he jumped up and flew toward the jackal-faced demon. Alkaid was truly confused. Should she run? Should she fight him? Should she just knock some sense into him?

...hey, yeah... isn't that what I always do anyway?

In many of their debates and arguments, Sirius and Alkaid did tend to verbally duel each other into submission, and by the end of the day, they always held mutual respect for the other. Their "fights" were about the only lively thing about Icolo these days, and this was no different. It was simply time for Alkaid to win again, that's all. Her doubt cast aside as quickly as it came, she threw herself back into the fight, attacking from behind.

Sirius, angered, countered the onslaught by throwing out a shockwave that knocked both opponents on their butts, and flipped through the air at Endrance for what appeared to be the tail end of the King Hammer Art. He never made it, as Alkaid yet again appeared from behind with a Sparrow Counter, striking upward to knock Sirius both loopy and airborne, then smashing the back of both her Dorje Hatchet blades into his chest, laying him out where Endrance had been. Not noticing his quick jump up and charging, Alkaid attempted another attack, only to be punched in the face with a guard break attack and sent flying into the wall.

<Sirius> - FOOLS! You won't take "it" so easily! I'll crush-

Endrance never let him finish. He dashed out in front of Sirius, and with blinding speed, used an upward slash that ended up with a stunned look on the Emperor's face, and Endrance kneeling behind him to his back-right, sword pointing straight up.

It was the same extraction slash he'd used on Saku, black dots emptying from Sirius's body until there were no more to give. He fell to his knees, a wild look still painted on an otherwise blank face.

<Alkaid> - Sirius...?
<Endrance> - He's finished... but he'll be-

More black dots poured from Sirius's body, but in all directions instead of just the direction of the cut. The beast began to bear his fangs once more, rage reclaiming him.

<Sirius> - "It"'s mine....

Sirius leapt into the air, then fell straight at the ground with extended claws of red-white fire.

<Sirius> - You hear me!?

He crashed into the Arena floor, leaving a crater, his body trembling with power.

<Sirius> - "It"'s... MINE!!!!

Using the power of an illegal Divine Awakening, a special attack that should only be available to full 3-PC parties with a full Morale gauge built up by certain positive actions, he summoned the Grappler's Awakening, Demise Claw, shredding through the ground with Alkaid at the center of two perpendicular claw lines. Zipping back to the center of the ring, still on one knee, he stared straight into Endrance's eyes as his marks exploded into fire, turning Alkaid into a ghost.

Endrance was relieved about one thing, however. He had attacked Alkaid with a normal maneuver, and not something manifested by AIDA, or made any attempt to infect her. Either he was still there in some capacity, or more likely, the AIDA simply had no interest in her. Whatever the case may have been, Alkaid would be safe now, no matter the outcome.

It was all on him, the way it should have been from the start. Sirius growled at the former Emperor.

<Sirius> - You'll never take "it" from me!
<Endrance> - Your plague is strong...
:Endrance brushes his hair away from his left eye.
<Endrance> - but "we" are stronger.

Delta: Hidden Forbidden Holy Ground - The Hulle Granz Cathedral

Kiyone sat atop the barrier blocking the dead end of the bridge leading out into the water away from the cathedral, messing with her long blue hair. She had an orange headband wrapped around her head, going under her hair now, that she had taken off prior to her becoming a Crystal, but the rest of her outfit was somewhat new: grey pants, a deep blue vest and a white long sleeved undershirt, the latter two adorned with the same W-like symbol the zombie had on his hat, gold over the left breast and black on both shirt sleeves. She also wore a brown glove similar to Kazuya's in design on her right hand, despite being left-handed in the game. She made the change for what she thinks is the hell of it, but really because she wanted something more fitting for a war with AIDA. Simplicity seemed a little unbecoming in The World, but it's hardly appropriate to dress like the enemy, she figured, even if Dusk himself stole a lot for his character from the Plague's lost knight.

It had been 10 minutes since receiving word from her "agent on the inside" that he might know where Anderson is. This was worrisome; the Azure Flame's ghost was never late. Turning one of her M2D lenses off so she could see, she lit up a cigarette in order to calm herself. She had tried to kick the habit, but to her own dismay, she couldn't stand the lack of emotional control she had without her cancersticks to help.

The neighbors' kids calling her "Smokey" whenever she went out didn't exactly encourage her. It gave her reason to spite them, really.

Interrupting her train of thought was the arrival of someone else. It was Haseo, the Terror of Death, on his daily routine. He would go see Shino in real life, at the hospital, and either before or afterward, come to Hulle Granz to reminisce. He had pushed beyond obsession; "net junkie" barely fit him at this point. Focused on the memories of Shino and Ovan, Haseo didn't notice Kiyone's presence and went into the cathedral.

Kiyone was surprised; she had heard Dusk had taken Haseo under his wing, and that his experience with Skeith should have awakened him quickly to some aspects of ESP. She figured he must be distracted by something to have not noticed her, as she hadn't cared enough about Haseo's story to look into it.

She whipped her head back toward the water. A ball of blue flames sat in the air in front of her; her "inside man" had finally arrived... but with a missing arm.

<Kiyone> - You got beaten up AGAIN?
<Azure Kite> - ....
<Kiyone> - The plague has a horrible sense of humor to have you as humanity's guardian. Here, I'll fix y-
<Azure Kite> - |=@7h3r...!

Father? Could he mean...

<Kiyone> - You found Anderson?
<Azure Kite> - ....
<Kiyone> - Dammit, say something! Did you find him or not!?
<Azure Kite> - ...AI... DA... cor... rupt....
<Kiyone> - What... are you trying to say Anderson was corrupted!? How the hell could THAT have happened!?
<Azure Kite> - |3a1b0|... Þr0#3c÷3c|....
<Kiyone> - Balbol? What's that?

The zombie sent a flash mail with clear writing; apparently the only thing it couldn't butcher in text were area words.

"Sigma: Hidden Forbidden Exhibition"

<Kiyone> - A lost ground, like Hulle Granz?
<Azure Kite> - ...<Tri-Edge>... +|¬3re....
<Haseo> - YOU!
:Kiyone turns around.
<Haseo> - Tri-Edge! I knew it, you just can't stay away from this place, can you!?
:Haseo draws his scythe, the Shouxiao!
<Haseo> - I'll make you pay this time you bastard... give her back... BRING SHINO BACK!!

Haseo, ignoring Kiyone entirely, jumped on the Platform and leapt off at the Azure, who drew one sword and guarded slowly. His scythe, black with gold lines making up the inner design of the blade on both sides, small spread out saw blades running quickly along the main blade, clashed with the zombie's Empty Skies sword, for now a singular affair. Haseo had most certainly strengthened under Dusk and Kazuya, easily pushing back who he believed to be Tri-Edge floating in the outer space beyond normal player boundaries. As his scythe grinded its rotating business end against the Azure's defense, sparks flying faster and farther than ever before, "Tri-Edge" teleported away...

or so it seemed. In fact, Kiyone recalled her henchman to her, hiding him on the bridge while she stood up to the Terror of Death.

<Kiyone> - Just what the hell do you think you're doing?
<Haseo> - Who the f*ck are you!?
<Kiyone> - My name is Kiyone, the Azure Flame, one of the Crystal. Dusk surely informed you of us.
<Haseo> - I don't care about that, who the hell are you to hide Tri-Edge!?
<Kiyone> - Idiot! This isn't Tri-Edge!
<Haseo> - ? What the f*ck are you talking about!? Ovan told me-
<Kiyone> - Lies. Ovan was full of them.
:Haseo looks surprised!
<Haseo> - What? What do you mean?

Crap. While she had no interest in Haseo, Ovan was too famous for her to not look into out of boredom, and Zelkova told her a lot over private e-mail.

And she just *had* to let that slip out, right now, to someone that doesn't know yet that he's obsessed with Ovan. May as well tell him... what harm could it do to her?

<Kiyone> - Didn't you ever wonder what that left arm was for?
<Haseo> - Everyone does, but-
<Kiyone> - Luna, who you know as Zelkova, figured it out and told Dusk and myself everything. First of all, the person you're attacking is one of the Plague's lackeys. My power allows me to trick him into obeying me without question since she's not giving him any orders.
<Haseo> - The Plague? You mean Aura?

Kiyone grimaced. Having sensed Aura's presence as well at multiple points, and believing Dusk's reasoning to be correct, she hated the mention of the Great Plague's true name... well, there was another reason for that, too....

<Kiyone> - Yes, Aura. My dog here is based on Kite, the leader of the dot hackers of seven years ago. He was created by the Plague to watch over the system, but as you can see, he's not actually that strong against any decent Epitaph User, or Indigo-in-training, for that matter.
<Haseo> - I....
<Kiyone> - You can't honestly believe that this decrepit mockery of The World's greatest hero could slice up and render unconscious both your love and my friend. You can't believe that my Anderson, a full-fledged Indigo, would so easily fall to a wuss like that!

"My." What the hell am I saying.

<Haseo> - Well if not him, then who!?
<Kiyone> - In Ovan's left arm was an AIDA. Its name was AIDA <Tri-Edge>.
<Haseo> - No... no, it can't be....
<Kiyone> - It WAS, until he collapsed. This wimp behind me does have one decent weapon in the Twilight Bracelet. When it struck Ovan with Data Drain, it attempted to destroy <Tri-Edge>, but failed. <Tri-Edge> escaped, taking Corbenik with it, shocking Ovan into a coma.
:Haseo's eyes are wide with terror.
<Kiyone> - Those are Zelkova's findings anyway. It's up to you whether you wish to believe it.

Kiyone hopped down onto the bridge, focused on her new task. Haseo shook off his expression and rebuilt his composure in an instant.

<Haseo> - Where are you going?
:Kiyone smirks.
<Kiyone> - Funny you should ask... my so-called "friend" here told me where our mutual enemy might be. Wanna come?
<Haseo> - Of course!
<Kiyone> - I won't protect you like Dusk would. If you don't yet have the strength, you'd better think long and hard about this unless you enjoy the prospect of becoming a meat shield.
<Haseo> - I... I have to finish this. I have enough power... let me join you....
<Kiyone> - You have more balls than brains; I like that, as a one-night-stand anyway.

Going through the usual spiel of forming a party, influencing the system to allow that functionality in a non-town area, Kiyone took Haseo and her lackey back to town, and headed for Zelkova's true base of operations.

Netslum Tartarga - Chaos Gate

:Haseo is once again surprised.
<Haseo> - What is this place-
<Kiyone> - Nevermind that, here's the deal... zombie boy couldn't care less about his own fate since there's very little that will wipe him out completely, and we won't likely find that "little" where we're going.
<Haseo> - Where is that anyway?
<Kiyone> - Sigma: Hidden Forbidden Exhibition, or by its proper name, Balbol Museum. Luna said Ovan took a liking to the place after his infection, and this retard claims to have found <Tri-Edge> there. He probably charged in first and lost that arm of his there, so keep your wits about you after the warp.
<Haseo> - Yeah... let's go.

But upon attempting to warp, Kiyone was met with an error message.

<Kiyone> - ...
<Azure Kite> - |3a1b0|... Þr0#3c÷3c|....
<Kiyone> - Then break it. You have that ability, don't you-

It was then that Kiyone remembered something from a previous journey with her dog; he can't gate hack like his namesake because he can ignore area protection. Since he was meant to work alone, that ability, along with his Bracelet's protection, doesn't spread to people he has member addresses for or is teamed up with.

<Kiyone> - Haseo... promise me you won't say a word to anyone about what you're about to see.
<Haseo> - What, why?
<Kiyone> - What I do next isn't something I want people to know about, and I'm only doing it because of how serious this situation is, you understand?
<Haseo> - ...I promise.

He had no choice, in his mind. If where these two are heading is toward the real Tri-Edge, he simply couldn't pass it up. She knew of Dusk, which likely meant she was trustworthy, as he had not once heard of Dusk in his time in The World prior to their initial meeting.

At least, he hoped he could trust her.

Getting the nod from "Tri-Edge," Kiyone closed her eyes and began a strange transformation. Her left arm grew blue/green armor, similar to Kazuya's. Her hair floated up slightly on unseen wind, turning white along with most of her clothing, the W marks disappearing. Looking on through flashes of static, Haseo saw her headband turn as blue as her vest had been, but of a lighter blue, a symbol formed on it via two arcing lines of electricity. It looked like an 8...

no, a mobius strip....

A ghostly visage appeared around Kiyone's PC, and then, the M2D could no longer show a coherent picture.

He was certain he knew who it was, somehow, but-was it really...?

With an Indigo...?

Could it possibly be...!?

The screen restored itself a minute later. Kiyone was normal once more, and the imposter had been restored to full health.

<Haseo> - Aura?
<Kiyone> - !! How do you-
<Haseo> - I don't know. I... don't know how I know... but I could swear I've seen you before.
<Kiyone> - You mean Aura, not me.
<Haseo> - Aren't you her?
<Kiyone> - No. My powers... mimic hers... it's why I had to leave the Indigo.
<Haseo> - But I thought-
<Kiyone> - I'm a Crystal in name only because I needed a way out before Dusk had a chance to find out, OK? I never wanted to leave, I wasn't ready! I was, I am fascinated with what this World holds, and I want to know more. The problem is that if Dusk finds out about what my ability is... he'll likely kill me. Best case scenario, I'd become a Lost One.
<Haseo> - He can do that!?
<Kiyone> - He's not Tri-Edge, but yes. Yes he can. His Flicker ability is much worse than those Signs Ovan had been carving all over the place, and he hates Aura with an immense passion.
<Haseo> - So much that-

Kiyone's eyes widened; someone was coming.

<Haseo> - ? What's up?
<Kiyone> - We have to go NOW. Are you coming?
<Haseo> - Of course!

And with that, Kiyone quickly went through the menus for and activated the Chaos Gate, taking the Azure and Haseo with her.

Not a few seconds had gone by before another PC warped in. It was Dusk, "following his nose" toward the Great Plague's signal. Looking around in vain, he had lost all traces of her.

<Dusk> - ....

"Did you find her?"

Dusk responded to the flash mail:

"She was here, Kagato. Then nothing. The Plague is toying with us."

"Paranoia?"

"Perhaps, but how else do you explain a flash in the pan like this?"

30 seconds passed before Kagato responded.

"Necessity."

That seemed to satisfy the bloodthirsty leader. If Aura felt the need to reveal herself here, then she's after something so precious that it's caused her to lower her guard. Before he could think further, Dusk remembered what area he was in: Zelkova's home, a territory he watched closely. Zelkova was who he contacted to watch the Holy Palace match as well.

Which meant he wasn't here.

The bridge!

Netslum Tartarga - Bridge

Dusk ran up to the terminal. He could use Zelkova's security system to find out more about the Plague's activities and maybe where she had gone. Stabbing into the terminal with a middle finger, a movie played back of the past few minutes.

What he saw dropped his jaw.

<Haseo> - Aura?

Traitor.

Traitor. The word flooded Dusk's mind; to think Kiyone had betrayed him, and to THIS extent. Everything in his being began to scream at him a simple message, that he had allowed Aura to infiltrate the ranks of the Indigo.

A shriek. Madness was taking him as he ripped his hand out of the terminal, leaving a wound on the sphere that looked like something exploded outward from within. He allowed her near Keiko, the very girl he swore on his soul to protect... Keiko!! The Plague had actually come close enough to his beloved to *touch* her. Dusk grabbed his head, his hands over his visor, tears pouring from his eyes as his cries of anguish continued with such little interruption. The thought of Aura near Keiko was infuriating, that he had failed so thoroughly... the fact Luna didn't recognize the Plague's presence in Kiyone didn't even occur to Dusk as his claw-like hands, bladed fingers of variable length, finally made their presence known by a singular backhanded slash, destroying the door back to town almost in a whip-like fashion, rage blinding him.

Netslum Tartarga - Chaos Gate

Another powerful slash, destroying another door. Dusk's face had contorted, his teeth bared like a mad dog as the vagrant AI's, in their dingy clothing, with televisions for heads, backed away in terror. Octavian pleaded with him to stop, but Dusk could barely hear it as he grabbed the gate with its power, forcing upon it what he called a "redial" command that would take him straight to the last known keywords warped to from the gate.

<Dusk> - Death to the self-righteous... Death to the imposters... DEATH TO THE DEMON!!

Giving his true battle cry to all that would listen, Dusk warped unknowingly toward Balbol Museum, alone. His anger had seared and melted the Chaos Gate where he grabbed it, the gate itself barely managing to get back to speed.

...

The Holy Palace

<Endrance> - You are a tough one... I'll give you credit for your tenacity... but no more.
<Sirius> - Countering your pathetic cat was a trivial matter! Your "power" isn't worth my spit!
<Endrance> - "Power"... such garbage. What is "power" if not a means by which to subjugate the weak? What is "power" if not a means by which to instill fear in the unwanted?
<Sirius> - ...your pseudo-philosophy be damned! I have the strength to obliterate EVERYONE that thinks they can come and take "it!" I have the power to crush your will, burn alive the dreams of change in your failure of a life and scatter the ashes of your hope into the wind!! What could a weak-minded fool like you hope to accomplish!?

Beaten and bloodied, his Macha weakened from the battle, Endrance decided he had had enough of this humiliation. For reasons unknown to him, Sirius was much tougher than Endrance had predicted, as if something were lending him the strength to resist all attack, starting with the Extraction Slash he had created on instinct and used to end possessions in the corrupted he had come across. Endrance was not stumped, and was far from losing hope; he had something else up his sleeve that was sure to end this fight.

<Endrance> - Look upon yourself...
<Sirius> - What?
<Endrance> - See yourself for who you are...

Sirius saw the monitors in the arena go dark. What was Endrance up to?

<Endrance> - Who you were...

A pitch black darkness took form in the dead monitors.

<Endrance> - Who you will be...

From the middles, a light began to shine out at Sirius. His instinct, or rather, the AIDA's, put him on high alert; something horrible was coming, something he didn't know if he could run away from, let alone stop. He tried to back off out of instinct, but stumbled and fell to the ground in the middle of the Arena.

<Sirius> - What is this-
<Endrance> - See those around you... past, present, future...
<Sirius> - What are you doing!? Stop!
<Endrance> - Witness the joys you bring,
the pain you cause,
the wonder of your arrival,
and the grief your passing creates...

Sirius's eyes grew wide, expressing his helplessness; the corrupt AIDA knew it was over, and Sirius's PC fell to its knees. The light grew, both in its size on the monitor and its intensity... he could almost see something form in the middle as the light's territory increased....

<Alkaid> - Please, stop this, I beg of you! Sirius doesn't deserve this!!!

Alkaid, fearful of Endrance's action, pleaded with him to cease his spell...

her cries fell on deaf ears.

<Endrance> - Reflect on everything at once, from birth to death! RECOLLECTION!!

Alkaid, sitting helpless, watched as the light bathed Sirius. The look of his face told a story of what was, to her, immeasurable pain. Endrance, however, knew the truth of his attack; it was the AIDA that was in pain, looking upon the truth of the life that was its host, and of the future Sirius would bring if it were left attached.

Endrance's idea worked. Black bubbles flew out of Sirius's back, and Endrance witnessed a fish-shaped cell-like entity make haste away from its host, scared for its life. He had succeeded in another cleansing, and an important one at that. The crowd was speechless; they had seen the light of Macha before, but the light of the monitors haunted all of the spectators.

What they had seen was nothing short of an exorcism.

Whether the spell had an effect on the audience as well, however, no one knew. Endrance didn't care, and no one could remember how the fight had ended, only that it had been a breath-taking finish. The announcer declared Endrance's victory as the Emperor's upper body finally fell on its back, joining its lower half in a horizontal position on the cold stone floor.

Recollection - A spell unique to Endrance, it dupes and uses the unique properties of a hole in the clouds of Al Fadel, a Lost Ground, to flood a target's mind with the memories and future of it, or the host's to any possessive spirit, parasite, or similar being. Such an immense amount of information alone can temporarily damage a person's or AI's mind, but being coerced into also recognizing the meaning of the memories in the same instant has the ability to break a person's mind in theory, and flatout destroying an AI by causing their mental hold on their own data to be lost, their remnants scattered across the network by multiple server/client requests. It can no longer allow its data to be copied in the attack's aftermath from the abject terror of knowing the entirety of its future in this life, and a refusal to possibly form new memories that future does not predict.

<Endrance> - ...Sirius.
<Sirius> - Endrance? Where am I... what happened?

Alkaid had never been so relieved to hear his voice.

Endrance didn't kill him after all.

He saved Sirius.

The cheater actually did it.

Maybe... just maybe... hackers weren't so bad after all...?

-----

I'm sure the Recollection attack isn't unique, and no, it doesn't require a pre-set device to be used; I was going to have Endrance create a mirror in the sky until I saw the monitors and thought that would get me out of an awkward setup. I thought of Recollection maybe a month ago; I sometimes improvise aloud how the next part of the story should go, and I ended up casting that spell off the cuff to finish the fight. It of course came from my reading the second G.U. novel since Al Fadel was mentioned at the end, I just changed the "entirety of The World" to the "entirety of oneself." I like, now that I think about it, how the flashing by of one's life when near death, in this case, would become the cause of death by itself.

As for why Endrance has the power to overhaunt someone with their own memories, I'm not really too sure on that one. It just seems to make sense to me that the guy most haunted by the past can in turn inflict that very pain a hundredfold on others. It's also a hint.

Anyway, yeah, no lovey-dovey crap this log. Dunno if I'll put more in either for a good while, as I think the end of log 12 makes the final point about how Dusk and Keiko operate. This isn't f*cking .hack//Twilight, after all. There will be a log detailing their relationship's origins of course, I just don't know when I'll finish it, and I've already decided it won't have any particular spot in the timeline, making it Log X1 (eXtra 1). IOW, it's filler for a fanfic.

Boy that's sad, filler in a fanfic... I almost feel like I should have Piccolo drive by. Maybe I should say something about Phyllo's last will, since his deathbed wishes carry all the weight of a plastic sword being sold to a pawn shop?

Speaking of which, that gives me an idea for Kestrel.... that I have now forgotten. :(

I also *just* realized something. <Tri-Edge> was supposed to show up after Sirius was defeated. That was why I titled the log the way I did. I had only written Kiyone's part today and totally forgot about <Tri-Edge>'s crashing the party, and lo and behold, the title STILL makes sense! I dunno if I'm that damn good or that damn lucky, 'cause those titles are a **** for me to come up with. :P

I was thinking about rewriting some of log 12, particularly the "rape" scene, but upon rereading it, I laughed a bit too much to tamper with it. Don't know what'll happen to her bun, though, especially since I'd forgotten about her inverted Henry VIII mentality.

NOTE: I updated log 14 above. You definitely need to read it again before hitting this one.
NOTE 2: If this post is too old for me to edit, ignore the previous note. What moron put a time limit on the edit function and left Delete intact, anyway?

This is a long one.

Not even kidding.

Log 15: Azure Flame

Several months ago... in the real world...

"Volume 7, page 97, 2nd edition."

This was the current passcode Kiyone was using to have her clients identify themselves. A good look at the man confirmed that this was indeed the person from Security Division 2 of the infamous CC Corp that had initiated contact. Well aware of the shadiness of the organization, when the man refused to say what the job would be over both e-mail and phone, she immediately insisted he come to Canada to meet in person.

She didn't expect he'd actually fly there, though.

Having taken the opposite seat in their booth at a Tim Horton's, a location chosen via throwing darts at maps her back was turned to as was her custom with face-to-face encounters, the Japanese man tried to begin with meager smalltalk.

"Get to the point."

"Snappy... fine."

He looked around first. While there didn't appear to be anyone in the vicinity that would remotely care about this, the information he was about to reveal couldn't fall on the ears of anyone with any interest in the game.

"You know about the incident in Japan where most of The World R:1 was destroyed in a fire, correct?"

"My associates told me they were trying to revive Aura. It serves them right if you ask me."

Indeed, Project R.A., or Revive Aura, resulted in a catastrophic fire for the original version of The World, in theory wiping out 80% of its data. Jyotaro Amagi, the head of the project at the time, set the fire in delirium before falling comatose. It is widely believed the others who were at their terminals at the time also fell into comas, though she hadn't cared to look deeper at the time to confirm that, so this was all she knew.

"A bit of internal research has concluded that Project R.A. failed based on the use of a dummy factor in place of Tarvos due to unforeseen circumstances, but I don't think that's the true cause."

? The man went silent.

"Spill it."

"...I believe Aura is still alive."

Well now, THAT was news to her.

"What makes you so sure of this?"

"I was one of the .hackers. You do know of them-"

"Yes. Keep going."

*ahem* "Right. As Kite moved forward, The World began to crumble. When Magus fell, the sky shattered and the Root Towns became corrupt. More glitched monsters appeared as the destruction of the Cursed Wave progressed, to the point that the servers were beginning to collapse in their entirety at the final battle. They were restored when Aura was reborn, after dying at Kite's blade, from what he told me of the short time in which I myself became comatose."

"Go on."

"I asked a mutual friend of ours what he believed the reason was behind why Morganna corrupted The World the way she did. He said that, aside from her desire to live overriding all morality, the corruption of The World was only somewhat intentional. He said that Morganna, at the time, really was The World itself, and that as we harmed her, we harmed The World as well. When Aura was reborn, she became The World, and that's why everything returned to normal."

"So you think The World is still standing because Aura hasn't truly disappeared?"

"Exactly. Aura may not be doing anything, but if she no longer existed on the network, or if she disconnected herself from The World, I think the game would have collapsed just as it could have without her rebirth six years ago, don't you think?"

Kiyone didn't really care. She played The World R:2, yes, but that's because many skillful hackers like herself populated the game. It had nothing to do with her liking the game. Her husband did, but that idiot also collects dolls and other toys based on the game, so his thoughts were often void, despite him playing her sidekick both in the game and in real life, and her own nickname having come from a manga character she claimed a lot of empathy with.

They also both agreed that she was really the one wearing the "pants" in their marriage, but that was neither here or there.

"What's the job?"

"Isn't it obvious? I want you to help me find Aura."

Oh lord. Aura was also known as the Key of the Twilight, so he was virtually asking her to go on a wild goose chase.

Virtually meaning she at least knew what the hell she was looking for.

"Do you have any idea how much of a timesink this is going to be, whether I succeed or not?"

"We've learned from our mistakes, miss Kiyone. We're ready to compensate you for your services should you turn up any information that at least lets us locate Aura ourselves, if nothing else. We'd consider you an 'outside consultant.'"

"You actually pay your 'outside consultants'? Last I checked, you guys were a bit shaky even with well-publicized contest payouts. I hate to think what the payroll department does to regular employees, let alone people like myself."

"I admit, CC Corp has had a bad track record in the past of giving players their due rewards, but after Lios nearly cost us everything, the last thing the board wants is for the company to be ostracized by the hacking community, especially should Harald curse us again."

"Hmmm...."

"Just ask Mr. Hino, a.k.a. Yata, a.k.a. Wiseman, if his checks have bounced or gone missing."

"...well, they did employ you, Mr. Balmung of Azure Sky."

"And they're more than willing to employ you, Miss Kiyone of Azure Flame."

Azure Flame... it had nothing to do with the .hackers; it was actually a nickname given to her by her husband, both for her love of the color blue and for her fiery temper. She wasn't necessarily a fan of it, but Anderson wouldn't stop calling her that until it was too late, and her hubby ended up nicknaming her among her hacker friends pretty much for life as a result.

Still, even if this "Balmung" did use that name to her face, a little extra cash coming in during a quiet time was never a bad thing. Anderson's job was secure, and she still had savings built up in both their names from various "side projects" over the past few years. She had a reputation as an ace hacker, known less for her ability to get the job done and far more for the fact that she had such a reputation without any calling cards at all. Hiring her would likely get the job done, and if it didn't, she at least guaranteed the job wouldn't be blown, that a subsequent hacker wouldn't have much additional BS to deal with, if any. In other words, she served as a sort of difficulty gauge for jobs beyond her skill, making her a safe bet no matter the requested feat.

Of course, given who was hiring her and the task at hand, that kind of skill was unnecessary here; Balmung must only be here because no one else of good standing would answer him.

Which meant she had him by the balls.

"What do you want me to do exactly?"

"You'll be working under me as far as the company is concerned, but like I said, all I want you to do is find Aura, or anything that could lead to her, and report back to me whenever you have something worth sharing. Given the nature of the task, I can't establish a definitive timeline, but I will say this; Yata is also looking for Aura, and our amount of time will likely be the same the company establishes for him."

"I see, so I may have months, maybe years, or only until tomorrow, then."

"Hey, if it's cut that short, I'll make sure you're still paid somehow. It may not be much though-"

"I know, you're not being paid a lot. I'm surprised you made the trip."

"Yes, well-"

"Let me guess; you paid your own way."

"...yes."

"Aura's that important to you, huh... fine."

"?"

"All I ask is that you let me do things as I see fit."

"That's my plan."

"I'll need contact details, then...."

...

Sigma: Hidden Forbidden Exhibition: present day

Kiyone, the Azure, and Haseo arrived in empty space, a solid dull white for ground and a featureless sky above. There wasn't even a Platform to be found here. Haseo was simply dumbfounded, but Kiyone was slightly miffed.

<Kiyone> - Hey, idiot, where are we!?
<Azure Kite> - |3a1b0|... @h3ac|....
<Kiyone> - Ahead?

Kiyone couldn't see anything.

<Haseo> - Well, you heard'em! Let's go!

Haseo ran out ahead of the group, right into an invisible wall with a thud. Landing on his butt, he flashed an angry look at the transparent object before embarrassment took over. Kiyone was equally humiliated just watching him.

<Kiyone> - You should at least wait to see what "ahead" means in a place like this.

The zombie floated out in the opposite direction while Kiyone and Haseo followed. The two matched him turn for turn through the unseen maze, Haseo looking more agitated by the minute as his impatience grew from the length of the trip. After what seemed like forever to him, however, the sky began to go black. The humans stopped.

<Kiyone> - Hey, is something attacking us?
<Azure Kite> - ....

Kiyone noticed that the sky's darkening had ceased. She took a step back, and it brightened slightly.

It was just a visual effect meant to scare them.

<Kiyone> - Nevermind. Let's go, Haseo.

Soon the area went completely black. To prevent his team from being lost, the other Azure Flame lit his own body ablaze, becoming a literal beacon in the darkness. Another few minutes of nothing passed before they saw something coming toward them.

Was it a monster? Kiyone couldn't tell. It looked like a square cut in two, and as it approached, she could tell it had the appearance of stone, bathed in red light, black dots all over it that looked like they were boiling off.

<Haseo> - AIDA!

AIDA? She came to the conclusion that this must be the corrupt AIDA approaching. Was it Tri-Edge, making a grand entrance?

No... it was something else... this thing had rings affixed to something... perhaps they were door handles...

and then the door stopped. It even backed off a few inches.

Fear.

That was what Kiyone felt from the door at first, perhaps afraid of her approach. Maybe it knew what she was. Afterward, she felt an immense terror approaching from behind, indicating she wasn't the source of the living door's hesitation.

Paralyzing fear washed over her this time. Haseo, feeling the same waves of hate, spun around to meet the other threat as Frankenstein's Kite watched the front.

It was hard to tell who was approaching at first. Four lasers wandering aimlessly, as if from sniper rifles put into a small rectangular formation, peered out from a huge, fiery aura of black and deep crimson. It lit up the grey ground beneath them in a hellish red as two claw-like hands with singular eyes on their backs now came forth from the fire, arms crossed in an X at the wrist, hands pointing downward so the eyes could see their new victims. The lasers were revealed to be coming from a visor of sorts, with which more lasers created a goggle-like frame...

A wretched cry came from the mouth of the demon. The AIDA door backed off further, as if it was in pain from the arrival of the beast. The newcomer spread its legs apart, opening its arms up shortly before crossing them, palms in front of the shoulders, its claws curved around and slowly extending behind its back. This revealed its face through the fire, unveiling a horrible madness as the lasers focused on the back of Kiyone's head.

It was Dusk, almost frothing at the mouth, as angry as he had ever been.

...

Two months after the meeting with Balmung...

Theta: Hidden Forbidden Battlefield - Coite-Bodher Battlefield

Kiyone sat behind the Platform near the grassy shoreline, the water a murky brown from a fight long past. In front of the Platform, a stone circle lay on the ground, surrounded by a stone floor and six pillars, each with a different colored gem in their middle facing the circle. At the area's beginning, even further back, was a Platform just up a staircase within the walls of a ruined temple of some kind. Kiyone had been watching a thunderstorm in the distance behind Mag Mell, a dragon turned to stone on a giant floating rock. Rumor had it that another Lost Ground was atop the dragon, but that wasn't her concern at the moment.

It was the AIDA she had encountered an hour ago. While wandering a random field lost in thought, she noticed black dots surrounding her left arm. A quick check of her own data revealed what appeared to be an infection, and try as she might, the AIDA fully assimilated itself into her data. Her arm grew blue and green armor around it, and... that seemed to be the end of it.

All the same, she had to call someone in.

<Zelkova> - Hi!
<Kiyone> - Thanks for coming.
<Zelkova> - Oh, it's no problem! Let's see that arm of yours!

Zelkova was mighty curious about it, she thought. This was *the* ace hacker of all The World since Helba left, after all, so if anyone knew how to fix this, it would be him.

<Zelkova> - Huh.
<Kiyone> - ?
<Zelkova> - This AIDA's not corrupt.
<Kiyone> - What does that mean?
<Zelkova> - Well, not every AIDA is evil. Didn't you know that?
<Kiyone> - I... err... no....

Balmung told her that AIDA was a phenomenon in The World that seemed to prey on players, but unlike Yata's G.U., Security Division 2's objective wasn't understanding the AIDA contamination, but rather, strict destruction of the "virus" wherever it spawned. It was growing at such a pace that Yata would still have more than enough data to do his job in the eyes of the higher-ups, so Balmung and Kazumi destroyed them indiscriminately. Kiyone, on the other hand, had nothing to fight them with; she was supposed to call SD2 when she discovered an AIDA, but this one had snuck up on her, and she'd be damned if her main character would be destroyed over this.

Why she was so suddenly attached to this character, she had no idea. Maybe the AIDA was causing it, who could say?

<Zelkova> - Hmmm... hmm, hmm, hmm!
<Kiyone> - Uhh-
<Zelkova> - Looks like we have a new recruit!
<Kiyone> - What are you talking about?
<Zelkova> - You have a special power, Kiyone!
<Kiyone> - Special power?

What was he talking about?

<Zelkova> - Yip! There's someone you really need to meet, Kiyone!
<Kiyone> - I don't-

Zelkova hopped up and forced her into his party, ignoring her confusion.

<Zelkova> - C'mon!

They left together, no explanations given.

...

Indigo "@HOME" - Chaos Gate

<Zelkova> - Gimme a minute. Wait right here!

Kiyone, dumbfounded, complied, if only because she had no idea where she was. She had found plenty of areas in her time "serving" Balmung, like the Arche Koeln waterfall, the Six Ringing Peaks of Al Fadel, Theta: Galloping Wrath's Blue Cloud and the like, but this place was weird. She thought it a greek, maybe Babylonian version of Breg Epona. Leaning on the guardrail away from the Chaos Gate, she pondered why there would be such a close dupe of a Root Town serving as one of the custom @HOME's. There were a couple people here, each of them catching glances of her and whispering.

How irritating. They're talking about me, right in front of me.

Before she could think of how to approach any of the four, however, someone came through the double door on the other side of the area, and took his sweet time walking up to her. He looked... weird, even for a PC in this game.

<Dusk> - Miss Kiyone?
<Kiyone> - Yes?
<Dusk> - My name is Dusk. I am the leader of the Indigo, a group that specializes in The World's gifted. Welcome to our home.
<Kiyone> - How do you do.

As she shook his odd hand, Kiyone thought it strange that Balmung never mentioned the Indigo. Taking screen captures was her first instinct upon hearing this; maybe he doesn't know about them.

<Dusk> - Zelkova tells me you've absorbed an AIDA for yourself instinctively. Not bad.
<Kiyone> - He told me it wasn't corrupt.
<Dusk> - A dirty little secret CC Corp wants to keep hidden. If their lackeys had any moral doubts about the mass exterminations G.U. wants carried out when their research is finished, things would get... problematic.

He knows about G.U. and the exterminations... but no word on SD2... maybe he doesn't know about her true objective?

<Kiyone> - How do you know-
<Dusk> - I know many things. It helps to have Zelkova as one of us. Come: I'll introduce you to a few people, show you what it means to be an Indigo, and you can decide from there whether you want to join us.

Kiyone gave his words some thought as she walked beside him.

If nothing else, I can find out what these Indigo are up to, and whether or not SD2 really knows anything about them. More information and alliances can't really hurt, can it?

...

Sigma: Hidden Forbidden Exhibition: present day

<Dusk> - DIE, DEMONCHILD!!!

Dusk took off, arms raised to shoulder level and bent back into V-shapes, claws pointing forward. He charged Kiyone at blinding speed, ignoring the AIDA door before her and only focusing on who he assumed had betrayed him.

Death... he longed to kill Aura.

The other Flame sped in-between for an uncharacteristically serious defense of his deceitful comrade. Assuming she was Aura seemed to increase his strength a hundredfold upon seeing her threatened; when Dusk extended his fingers outward and brought the blades of his extensions down on the Azure from different directions multiple times, one hand per strike, he was unfazed by all attacks. Reeling them in for close range did little good for Dusk; it even reminded Haseo of his battle with the zombie as he watched in amazement.

The Indigo leader jumped back, and shouted his battle cry as his lasers converged on the sewn-up monstrosity's head.

<Dusk> - DEATH TO THE A.I. MENACE!!

His face blank as always, the Azure had no motivation to wait for the next strike; he flew into Dusk, head-first into the madman's chin before his body spun up for a kick to the same area. This sent the Indigo leader airborne, where the zombie teleported and soundly kicked the attacker in the gut, throwing him back into the darkness. His aura never dissipated, while the Azure's flames grew more intense and potent. Both Kiyone and Haseo could feel the heat... despite this only being a game world. Haseo was trying to deny it, his mind bound still by reality's chains to a certain extent.

Kiyone knew better, though. This World's foot in the door of reality was unquestionable to her; only the extent of which it had crept in was a mystery.

The true Azure Flame charged his recovering opponent, his blackened dual swords drawn for a deathblow. Both auras flared before impact, almost scorching the other two humans, while the screams of the combatants threatened to deafen them, even from such a far-off distance. The Azure pressed down on the guard of Dusk, glancing back at Kiyone, who had finally turned around to see the fight. Through their own special telepathy, he gave Kiyone an order to go on without him; he would see to Dusk.

<Kiyone> - ...are you sure?
<Azure Kite> - ....
<Kiyone> - ...then don't you dare fail me. Haseo!

Kiyone and Haseo turned their attention to the AIDA door.

...

A couple months prior to the loss of Ovan...

Netslum Tartarga - Bridge

Kiyone stared out at sea at the front of the bridge. Taking up parking in Mac Anu again, once more disguising itself as a "sunken" cargo canoe beyond the water's boundaries, Zelkova had parked it to watch the sunset, but he had to attend to some business at his Moon Tree guild first.

The woman had experienced much in the months she spent as an Indigo. She learned firsthand how The World could affect all five senses, how she could affect it in turn, what it meant to have one's mind opened beyond the physical realm. She had been a skeptic for a number of years, closing her mind to the paranormal, but when she took in the AIDA, something in her mind opened up to a new realm of possibility, forcing her to turn her attention to a part of reality she had oft neglected in her life.

However, now she was afraid of both losing that and failing at her job in Balmung's employ. She finally awakened her Indigo ability while Dusk and Keiko slept this night, but her power was something recognized by The World as divinity. Having seen certain pictures before, she knew what she looked like when she transformed, how the mobius strip appeared on her forehead, her hair turned white, and her arm morphed into a Twilight Bracelet-like weapon that operated on five pull-strings, like a bow-and-arrow toy of some sort.

The look of a toy didn't take away from the firepower of its Data Drain, however, nor did it subjugate the "signal" she apparently gave off, as the rumored Tri-Edge appeared to her...

and *bowed*.

The system seemed to recognize her as Aura.

Kiyone remembered Dusk's anti-Aura rants well, how she became God over both The World and the network, overstepping her bounds and virtually enslaving everyone whose life incorporated technology by rendering human maintenance obsolete... how she then abandoned them, allowing the network and The World to deteriorate with no known cause to all but CC Corp... how she still allows the gifted to sense her presence, giving them false hope in her equally false slumber.

This was just the tip of an explosive iceberg. Dusk made no bones to anyone who asked that he wanted Aura dead, that he would hunt her down and gut her himself. While Dusk's anger was indeed frightening, if only because one could feel its immense pressure clear across the pond through the network, it was also silly once one asked Zelkova about the true reason why he hated Aura. It was all in some perceived threat on Keiko that Dusk wanted to kill the "Great Plague."

Then again, some of Earth's greatest enemies had silly motivations too, and that never stopped them... but more important was the incredibly obvious theory that Dusk would likely kill her if he found out about her ability to mimic Aura.

<Zelkova> - And that's why you came to me.
<Kiyone> - GAH!! Don't sneak up on me like that, Luna!
<Zelkova> - Y'know, talking to yourself like that is a sign of Schizophrenia.
<Kiyone> - And how would you know?
<Zelkova> - I wiki'ed it. :P

Did Zelkova really have to play the part of a kid while my life is on the line?

<Kiyone> - So you understand then.
<Zelkova> - That you need professional help, yes. :)
<Kiyone> - No, my powers! Dusk will kill me when he finds out!
<Zelkova> - Dusk is hardly Kain, Kiyone. He's not gonna rip your wings off or anything.
<Kiyone> - ...What?
<Zelkova> - Look, if I talk to Dusk, I'm sure he'll understand that this isn't your fault and he'll welcome you back with open arms, K?
:Kiyone sighed.
<Kiyone> - If you say so.
<Zelkova> - Good! He should be waking up anytime now, so he'll see my flash mail and we'll see in a few minutes-

Zelkova got his reply far sooner than expected. Apparently the jingle had woken Dusk, and, well...

he wasn't happy.

And not about being woken up, either.

<Zelkova> - Erm....
<Kiyone> - I told you, Mr. Optimist.
<Zelkova> - Eh heh!
:Zelkova blushes out of embarrassment.
<Zelkova> - Yes, um, well... congratulations! You are now an official member of the Crystal faction! No more Indigo for you!
<Kiyone> - What?

Zelkova then explained what the three factions of Indigo, Crystal, and Rainbow represented, and Dusk's wish that the factions don't congregate beyond their leaderships. Furthermore, this would mean Dusk would not be the guy she reports any progress on her powers to, if she ever reported; that would go to its leader and only other member...

...who happened to be Zelkova.

<Zelkova> - So coming to me was a great big stroke of luck! And I never mentioned names, so he has no idea who I was talking about!
<Kiyone> - ....
<Zelkova> - What?
<Kiyone> - I really liked being in the Indigo.

A lie. Balmung wanted her to heavily investigate the Indigo from the inside once he had been told about their existence. Yata had no idea about them, and Zelkova had been denying they were real; when Kiyone announced that she had uncovered their existence, Balmung and Kazumi agreed that recon work on this group had to be her job from now on.

<Zelkova> - I know, but that's the rule. It's either this or Dusk eats your head.
<Kiyone> - Wait.

Kiyone suddenly had a very devious thought... that if she could send someone ELSE in....

<Kiyone> - I'm not allowed to talk to any Indigo, right?
<Zelkova> - Save Dusk and Keiko, maybe Kazuya, yes, but they're entirely optional, and Dusk doesn't encourage it.
<Kiyone> - Are there *any* exceptions to that rule?
<Zelkova> - Uh, well... yes, it's called the Keiko Exception! If your lover is still Indigo, you're allowed to talk with them and no one will care if you get spotted doing so!

That wasn't surprising in the least; Kiyone was glad to hear Dusk's mental crutch could also serve as a back door.

<Kiyone> - Perfect! There's a guy named Anderson on my home servers that wants to join!
<Zelkova> - Uhhh-
<Kiyone> - He WILL join!
<Zelkova> - Ok, ok! But you do know that he needs to show some kind of gift, right?

Kiyone smiled in real life, but hid it from The World.

<Kiyone> - I'm sure he has a gift. I'll convince him to talk to you and you'll take it from there, right?
<Zelkova> - Heh, sure! Make sure he can enter Netslum first! All Indigo are considered hackers, after all! But, one thing....
<Kiyone> - What?
<Zelkova> - Why?
<Kiyone> - I need to be involved with them. In some way, I have to remain with the Indigo. I can't explain it, Zelkova.
<Zelkova> - Heh, I understand. Don't worry, he'll get in if he has what it takes.

...

Sigma: Hidden Forbidden Exhibition - AIDA door

<Haseo> - How do we get in?

Kiyone cast her guilt about dragging her husband into this mess back into her mental abyss; she would save him no matter what it took. Kiyone readied her left hand, flattening the palm, fingers lined up straight, arm positioned to thrust.

<Kiyone> - We attack it. I'll use my strongest attack on one side, you use yours on the other, and I'd bet it will open.
<Haseo> - Because we're Indigo?
<Kiyone> - Hold pride in that title, Haseo. AIDA-PC, Epitaph User, these statuses and labels mean nothing to the likes of us. Only those of true inner strength can hope to stand against this World!

Haseo felt a rather evil half-smile creep across his face. His pride had finally begun to return, the realization of what he needed to do to save Shino having at last set in.

<Kiyone> - Le-
<Haseo> - Let's go, Kiyone!

Haseo drew his scythe, and readied the strongest second level Art, Heavenly Wheel, based on advice given to him by Kazuya that it was indeed the strongest physical attack in his arsenal. Kiyone smiled in confidence; a thought ran through her mind that Anderson's gonna have to learn a thing or two from this guy if he ever wants her actual respect.

Dusk was locked in combat with a now invincible enemy; he was no longer a threat. Now the door to the museum could be opened. However, as they charged, two powerful shots rang out from above the door, putting craters in their path. The confident duo stopped in their tracks, taken aback by the surprise attack.

<????> - Sorry little lady, that's as far as you go!

Someone hopped down from atop the door. His hair was red, tied into a ponytail that curved upward in the general shape of a scorpion's tail, its tip extending just beyond the reach of his nose horizontally; vertically, it was still a head's height above that facial feature. His face was white like a clown's, the large headband holding his hair black, his pupils a bright green in spite of oily black eyes.

Kiyone had a hard time looking away from this monster, and got a very good look at him for it. He wore a dull white trenchcoat with a long right sleeve, but the entire left side was in tatters, starting from the edge of the shoulder going to the armpit, and down the same direction for the rest of the coat. The entirety of it below the torso was gone only on that side, which had appeared to have been ripped off violently. Underneath the coat, a richly adorned black and deep red outfit covered the rest of his body left vulnerable by the 'coat save the left elbow and below, of which there was only a red glove and a crumbling burnt gauntlet on white skin. The black boots on his legs extended up to below the knee, the tops appearing to be made of dark flickering flame rather than any leather or other solid material.

But on his chest, there appeared to be two red-hot scars bleeding through the red/black material, and when the trenchcoat opened a little, a third vertical scar could be seen going down the right breast.

This man, to Kiyone, had to be one of Tri-Edge's pawns.

Haseo, on the other hand, recognized him immediately.

<Haseo> - Kuhn!?
:A cheshire cat-like smile appears on Kuhn's face!
<Kuhn> - Why hello, Haseo! Did you come to die for her!?

His voice sounded filtered, a little raspy. It was a little slow, and creepy in its distortion.

<Haseo> - Who are you talking abou-
:Kuhn's eyes widen!
<Kuhn> - Tri-Edge, of course! She's been expecting you, Terror of Death!
<Haseo> - Tri-Edge!? Where is she!?
<Kiyone> - And where's Anderson, you foul demon!?

Kuhn's face calmed, and went into a smirk. He exuded confidence now as he looked into the woman's face, making her heart skip.

<Kuhn> - My dear Kiyone, Anderson works for us now.
<Kiyone> - How do-
<Kuhn> - I've been watching you ever since you arrived at my door. The strength of Aura's lackey and hate-monger are palpable even from the other side, I must say... but enough about them.

Kuhn walked up to Kiyone, who tried to reassume a fighting posture. However, visions in her mind clouded her concentration. She couldn't tell what they were, but her face was flushed from them...

maybe blushing was a better word?

<Haseo> - Kiyone?
<Kiyone> - I-I'm fine-
<Kuhn> - Why would you ever want someone as impotent and weak as Anderson by your side?
<Kiyone> - ...you just don't understand....
<Kuhn> - I don't think you get it either, not anymore anyway.

Oh hell, this was a mental assault! Kiyone's realization led to a half-hearted jab at Kuhn's torso, which was easily dodged, leaving her back turned to him as she stumbled forward.

<Kuhn> - Hm, feisty, aren't we?

The AIDA-PC gently grabbed her from behind, his right arm across her tummy area, but the left...

<Kiyone> - What the hell-you can't touch my chest like... ahhh....

She tried to open her left arm, calling her power of Aura, but that just made the arm twitch. Kuhn had used some kind of hypnosis on her, and now she was helpless to his touch, almost wanting of his advances as he pinched her right nipple through her clothing.

<Haseo> - What the f*ck are you doing, Kuhn!?

Haseo quickly whipped out his broadsword, the Centipede, a purple-black-red colored affair that had a sickle-like tip, the rest of the blade with chainsaw-like blades that looked like insect legs running up one side and back down the other into an embellished hilt. Fearing the scythe might hit Kiyone in this strange area, Haseo used the sword instead, attacking with full force and bringing the sword down only on where Kuhn stood, the saw at full speed.

But Kuhn had flown in front of the door and above the floor, his victim in tow.

<Kuhn> - Now now, Haseo, I'm not into guys... but my mistress would LOVE to have you, y'know, right before she cuts out your throat, perhaps?
<Kiyone> - Let me go-
<Kuhn> - Shhh... now now...

Kiyone's voice had weakened significantly as Kuhn's influence on her mind took hold. He moved his left hand slowly downward.

<Kuhn> - I know this is your first time with me... and I promise I'll be gentle...
:Kuhn grabs her in a... private area.
<Kiyone> - Ah!
:Kuhn grins again.
<Kuhn> - For the first minute or so, anyway.
<Haseo> - Kuhn, you bastard! Let her go now!

Ignoring an attack spell from Haseo that went under the two, striking the door fruitlessly, Kuhn begins to whisper in Kiyone's ear.

<Kuhn> - It's OK, dear... I know what you want... just me and you, in a tender embrace,
:Kuhn kisses her neck, nudging her head aside with his own.
<Kuhn> - My hands massaging you...
:Kuhn kisses her near her ear.
<Kuhn> - My lips pressed to yours,
:Kuhn tightens his grip below; Kiyone makes a short gasp.
<Kuhn> - as I slowly slip inside you,
:Kuhn breathes into her ear with his next statement.
<Kuhn> - my love flowing into you...
<Zelkova> - My scythe-blade running through Kuhn's spinal cord in the process.

Out of nowhere it seemed, Zelkova had appeared at the top of the door behind Kuhn, weapon at the ready. Kuhn was so surprised by this that he dropped Kiyone to the ground when he turned around, where Haseo caught her. Her face was still flushed from Kuhn's advances.

<Haseo> - Kiyone! Are you OK!?
:Kiyone breathes heavily.
<Kiyone> - I let my guard down... the bastard....

Zelkova had a blank look in his eyes as he stared down Kuhn, who had only just noticed the lack of battle sounds. The Azure and Dusk had moved well away from the door in their battle. There was a white streak on the inside of Kuhn's ponytail now that only Zelkova had noticed, but it only went a quarter of the way up, and was beginning to recede. Kuhn's look of surprise was quickly overcome by a disappointed calm.

<Kuhn> - Zelkova of Moon Tree... what brings you out here?
<Zelkova> - I noticed someone had been in my home, ate all my porridge.
<Kuhn> - Goldilocks doesn't live here I'm afraid, and if she did... well, I'm not one to discriminate based on age....
<Zelkova> - And what should I find when I follow her trail, but a rapist AIDA about to ruin the dignity of one of my friends?
<Kuhn> - Ruin her dignity? Is that how you see it? I thought I was rewarding her, such a passionate soul coming willingly into my arms, practically begging me to take her... I would have done so much for that blue-haired beauty, and if you'd just leave-
<Zelkova> - I can't believe the AIDA has consumed you by this much, Kuhn.
<Kuhn> - It's the other way around, I assure you!
<Zelkova> - I wonder what Mai would say?
<Kuhn> - ! You shut your mouth about her!!

Kuhn whipped out his AIDA-granted weapons, the Twinzabi. These long, double-barreled bayonets were lined with blades back to the handle, one on the top of the top barrel and one on the bottom of the bottom barrel. Each blade was blood red with wide jags, and a skull design protruded from within the center of each tip. It was actually a double version of the highest level common bayonet, made especially for Kuhn.

<Zelkova> - Would she approve of your self-sacrifice, of how easily you've given in to your own sexual desires, Kuhn?
:Kuhn's hands begin to shake.
<Kuhn> - Shut up.
<Zelkova> - Oh sure, it gave you the Propagation... but you lost her, didn't you? The only woman that could ever love you, Sieg.
<Kuhn> - Shut! Up!
:Kuhn shoots, barely missing on both sides of Zelkova's head due to shaky grips!
<Zelkova> - You lost her to your own lust, Tomonari. You. And she was right to ditch you. No one wants a person that only thinks with their crotch, and you couldn't possibly love her for who she really was! All you saw was an object, didn't you!?
<Kuhn> - SHUT UPPPPP!!

Kuhn began to call upon Magus, the Propagation, third Phase of Morganna, but that's exactly what Zelkova was looking for. During the transformation sequence, Zelkova warped himself, Kiyone, and Haseo out of the area back to Netslum, leaving an enraged Kuhn behind to fight with his own defects and demons.

...

Netslum Tartarga - Bridge

<Kiyone> - The Propagation, huh?
<Zelkova> - Yes indeedy! No need to beat yourself up for this one! :)

As the trio sat in the still-damaged bridge, Zelkova got Kiyone calm enough to explain why Kuhn had been able to seduce her without even trying. Magus, the Propagation, was a Phase that desired the other gender in sexual ways, which would lead to conceiving children. It was the part of Morganna that led to her own subconscious desire to conceive Aura. To her, it was more than merely Harald's programming; it was a... "human"... longing. In order to be chosen by Magus, however, one must not only want to be with the other sex in such a manner quite badly, but also have that gender pursue you with just as much lust.

Kuhn was chosen not just for his "sickness" as his friends called his devotion to all beautiful women, but also for how those heavenly flowers were willing to reciprocate. The corrupted AIDA within him drank in this aspect of Magus, and exuded a "telepathic" suggestion on everyone in the area Kuhn happened to be in that would desire to be with a man. It quickly acted almost in complete secrecy to make such victims vulnerable to all manner of actions, believing anything from Kuhn to be sexually gratifying by the time most would notice they were being tricked. It went so far as to make their desires paralyzing, leaving the AIDA-possessed Kuhn free to do whatever he pleased, his victims only capable of helping him and giving him more of what he wanted.

In short, he was a masculine Siren.

This meant that straight women and gay men who were not in total mental control of themselves in Kuhn's presence had no chance of winning a fight with him, hence Zelkova's decision to come alone. Only someone who had no natural desire for men could claim immunity to his debilitating presence.

<Kiyone> - How much of that is a guess?
<Zelkova> - Magus isn't terribly difficult to figure out. I'm 100% certain AIDA is using Magus at the door to Balbol entirely for this reason.
<Kiyone> - Why?
<Zelkova> - If Tri-Edge knows Cubia has returned in a female "Epitaph User," it would make complete sense to put someone at the gate against which no straight woman has a chance of defeating... and who would assault her in perhaps the most humiliating way possible.
<Kiyone> - Kuhn was targeted at Indieglut Lugh before Endrance's corruption was destroyed, right?
<Zelkova> - Yes. Kuhn was after Endrance, as G.U. believes more than two Epitaphs active at once in the same area causes them to go berserk. It made sense to only send one to avoid a "catastrophic scenario," as Yata put it to Pi.
:Kiyone groans.
<Zelkova> - What?
<Kiyone> - Nothing.
<Haseo> - So when do we go back?

Suddenly, Zelkova remembered that he was harboring an Indigo. Dusk might have seen Haseo, but Luna was rather certain that he had immense tunnelvision and didn't likely notice.

Besides, Zelkova had extracted Skeith from Haseo already.

Who cares if Dusk kills him?

<Zelkova> - Uhhh, "we" aren't going anywhere! Bye-bye!
:Haseo is teleported out of Netslum.
<Kiyone> - ?
<Zelkova> - He's still an Indigo, y'know, AND he's obsessed with Tri-Edge. Better I not have to explain our not going back anytime soon to him over pages and pages of chat log.
<Kiyone> - ....
<Zelkova> - I'll talk to Dusk. I'm sure once he calms down, he'll understand.
<Kiyone> - I... I don't know how to thank you.
<Zelkova> - You don't have to. I know where Morganna is, thanks to you.
<Kiyone> - ?
<Zelkova> - Balbol Museum was where Ovan liked to gather information on The World, and he was Tri-Edge. Moreover, he was Corbenik, and when Morganna and Corbenik became the same entity, that "fusion" as Helba put it was never reversed. Therefore, Morganna has to be Tri-Edge, and she's hiding out at Balbol to avoid running into Cubia.
<Kiyone> - You finally have your story straight, huh?
:Zelkova groans; Kiyone laughs.
<Zelkova> - Feeling better though?
<Kiyone> - Yeah, I'm gonna take off. Good night, Zelkova.
<Zelkova> - Good night, Kiyone!
:Kiyone logs off.

To: Balmung
From: Kiyone
Subject: Zelkova

Whatever fallout occurred between SD2 and Netslum should be worked out ASAP. Zelkova knows a lot more than we ever suspected, and we WILL need his help in eradicating the AIDA menace.

...

To: Kiyone
From: Balmung
Subject: Re: Zelkova

Thanks for finally dropping a line! And here I thought I'd have to cut off your paycheck. :P

If my guess is correct, "ASAP" means "wait at least a week," right? I wouldn't want my agent being discovered, after all. Kazumi, Pi, and myself will talk to Zelkova once we're sure the threat of your discovery is past.

-----

Oh wow... for someone I didn't think would get any noteworthy screentime beyond dealing with Anderson, Kiyone sure took a chunk of the story for herself, huh? This log actually took me all night to do; I had no idea it would take that long when I started! Anyway, let's summarize what's new:

Kiyone - Now known as a member of Security Division 2, a freelance hacker brought on initially to find Aura, but now researches the Indigo. Anderson was brought in when she could no longer remain with the group due to developing powers very similar to the Great Plague herself, and Dusk is more than angry enough to show us why.

Balmung - Head of Security Division 2 due to seniority, mostly (and the fact that he can't be trusted with event planning...). He hasn't changed much since LotT overall; if anything, he's more relaxed now.

Kazumi - User of the Dummy Morganna Factor, works directly under Balmung. His boss's presence is what stops him from going through with his Project R.A. plan. Kamui could've filled Balmung's role in theory, but thinking about it, she might've ended up agreeing with Kazumi too much and spurred his plan along, which is NOT going to happen in this story. Without yet another new character, only Balmung was interesting and believable enough to take charge of SD2 away from Kazumi.

AIDA <Tri-Edge> - It's alive! For certain!

Kagato Itsuki - He speaks in flash mail in log 14, finally.

AIDA Kuhn - I finally get to use him. I thought of him becoming infected at the beginning of December, wondering what to do about his Sign. I had always planned on Anderson getting infected from his, so it was only natural that Kuhn turn. Of course, AIDA Kuhn comes with a price, and that is sexual terror. This will not be the last you see of him, and I have... ideas... floating around my head about how I could go about using his powers for chaos in The World. The Twinzabi comes from the fact that Magus also shoots from both hands (like Skeith the 3rd), and if given an "Xth Form," could in theory also become a Dual Gunner, among other things.

So now we have four sides:

Netslum - Wishes to restore Morganna to give her a real chance at life.
Indigo - Wishes to kill Aura and continue with their plan of giving humanity a jump start in psychic development.
SD2 - Has a pressing need to destroy AIDA, but is unclear on what needs to be done about the Indigo.
AIDA - Motive currently unknown.

Anyway, along with -COOH getting a break, I allowed Azure Kite an immense amount of strength to get Dusk out of the way for a little bit as well. Yes, I do believe that Kite's power is completely reliant on his motivation, and if he thinks Aura is there, it's gonna be a nightmare since his zombie pals don't exist in this story to back him up (all of the power they would have been granted is now assumed to be dumped into Azure Kite). This means that if Kiyone is present, Azure Kite becomes something of a DEM.

Hopefully the story hasn't gone to hell yet! I've no idea what will be in log 16, so who knows when that's coming.

Delta: Hidden Forbidden Holy Ground - Hulle Granz Cathedral

<Keisuke89> - Wow... the cathedral's just as beautiful as I imagined!
<2882> - Told ya!
<Keisuke89> - I mean, that sunset... the twilight is gorgeous!
<2882> - Heh, you haven't seen anything ye....
<Keisuke89> - Huh? What's up?
:2882 points at the door to the cathedral.
<2882> - That crack...?

The newbie looked straight ahead to see a large crack had just appeared over the door while he gushed about the background. Its green glow seemed otherworldly, feeling like it led somewhere.

<Keisuke89> - I'd heard about this game having all sorts of strange bugs.
<2882> - Yeah, it's nothing like those black dot rumors either.

Upon closer inspection, they found they couldn't interact with the oddity, and having no knowledge of hacking The World, there was no way to investigate further on their own. A quick, dirty and fruitless search, to be sure.

<Keisuke89> - You think maybe the message boards could have an answer to this?
<2882> - Well, CC Corp has this habit of deleting posts about rumor stuff in addition to fixing these things without explanation... but I know a few unofficial boards we could post at-
:Four fingers make their way through the crack from the other side!
<2882> - WHA-!?
<Keisuke89> - Holy ****!

The hand widened the gap enough for another hand, this one withered, to grasp the opposing side, beginning to pry open the crack from within. As it widened, a straining, angry face could be seen on the other side, teeth bared, eyes glaring, scaring the casual player and the newbie back to the Platform to get the hell out of there, as they would soon post to whatever forums would listen.

A struggling yell, and a final pull...

The person stumbled out of the interdimensional gap back into The World proper.

He was free from that virtual Hell at last.

He had only one thought in mind as he ventured back into the Cathedral....

...

Unknown field

<Haseo> - ....
<Keiko> - ...you're cold, Haseo.
<Haseo> - Uh huh, like you can feel this.
<Keiko> - I can, and you're cold! Your armor's not snuggly at all. :(

With Kazuya on an errand, and Keiko mopey, Dusk was strapped for options when Luna called him away on business. Having no one else to turn to, Dusk pushed Haseo into Keiko's bed and made him cuddle with her until he returned, which Haseo meekly protested.

Meekly, of course, because he'd never have expected this in a million years. All he was doing was reporting to Dusk on his progress, and then... whatever the hell was happening now happened.

At the end of each day, Dusk and Keiko would change into their jammies and climb onto a white sheet suspended in midair that served as their bed. Bundling up together, their bodies under a red blanket lined with black, Dusk would prop up their pillows the same way he did the bed so Keiko could read the Chims a bedtime story before they slept together.

Of course, "slept together" didn't mean making love, which they'd never done. Keiko would snuggle up against Dusk, using his chest as another pillow while they wrapped each other up under the cover of a beloved childhood memory. Dusk would always make her wear a nightcap, red-orange with a wave symbol whose significance was lost on his girl, so that his breathing wouldn't mess with her hair all night. From there, they'd sleep the night away, in real life wearing their M2D's to bed so that when they woke up, it would be in their World, where the first thing they'd see would be the only reason either bothered to live.

The problem Haseo was forced to deal with, however, stemmed from Keiko always waking up in one of two moods: delightful and happy, or sad and mopey. Which it would be was unpredictable. If the former, it would be a normal day, and Dusk could do whatever. If the latter, Dusk couldn't leave Keiko alone, or her depression would make her beyond miserable to the point of suicide. While they may have been physically separated, Dusk made sure to keep up with Keiko by other means over the years in order to save his girl from herself long enough for their destined reunion.

Haseo didn't know any of that, and therefore had no idea what Dusk wanted him to do other than "Watch her." He said nothing else before pushing Haseo into bed. He tried to get out after Dusk left, calling the whole affair "weird as hell," but Keiko dragged him back into bed by the heartstrings, and Haseo was scared he'd be killed for the slightest indiscretion.

'I mean, he did kill Yata right in front of me just for being on Aura's side.'

Haseo's thoughts reminded him of what the penalty could be if he somehow crossed Dusk without knowing it.

<Haseo> - No one's armor should be cuddly, Keiko.
<Keiko> - But still, you could change your outfit for awhile! Here, wear this.

Keiko produced sky blue footed pajamas, with white cats all over it, from the feet to the wrists.

'What.

The.

F*ck!?'

Granted, she was wearing the same thing, just pink with bunny designs instead of cats, but still!

<Haseo> - You can't be serious.
:Keiko gives Haseo the puppy dog eyes treatment.
<Keiko> - Pleeeeeeeeeease?
<Haseo> - I'm not wearing something of yours, I'm a guy!
<Keiko> - Mine?
<Haseo> - ?
<Keiko> - This isn't mine. It's Dusk's! He likes kitties! :D
<Haseo> - ....
<Keiko> - Haseo?

Haseo was on the verge of hysterics. Dusk, the big bad of the Indigo, wears THIS to bed!?

The Terror of Death completely lost it.

<Keiko> - What's so funny?
<Haseo> - It... it's just... seriously!? He wears this!?
<Keiko> - Yes! It makes us feel better when we're both warm and 'nuggly!

It looked to him like something only a toddler or a little girl would wear.

<Haseo> - And he indulges you in this?
<Keiko> - He came up with the idea! He made this one for me because I love bunnies!
<Haseo> - Right-
<Keiko> - I actually had a bunny when I was younger. His name was Mr. Bunbuns and he was SO adorable and cute with his big ears and his fwuffy bunny tail and-
<Haseo> - You're not mopey anymore, huh?
<Keiko> - Well I have someone to talk to and hug on. Dusk says cuddles are the only thing that cures me from wanting to hurt myself.
<Haseo> - Don't you have the Chims for that?
<Keiko> - Well... it only works so far. They are my babies and all, but when I'm sad, I need someone there for me that can talk to me or I do things.
<Haseo> - Do things?
<Keiko> - ....

She began to cry.

<Haseo> - Keiko-
<Keiko> - I'm sorry Mr. Bunbuns... *sniff* I didn't mean it!

'Oh no, what did I do now!?' Haseo had no idea he was about to kick in a floodgate of regret and tears.

<Keiko> - I'm sorry!!
:Keiko grabs Haseo and hugs him, TIGHT.
<Haseo> - Ghhhkk!

'Dusk, get back here dammit! AND MAKE IT QUICK!!'

...

Netslum Tartarga - Bridge

Zelkova, Kaede, and -COOH had gathered on the bridge in front of the terminal to tell Dusk some troubling news.

Well, troubling for him. For Veronica, it gave her reason to smile.

<Dusk> - No.
<Zelkova> - I'm sorry, but it occurred to me I hadn't checked into Veronica's past and I had to correct that error! I had no idea she'd be connected to-
<Dusk> - You dragged me from my Keiko for this miserable idea of a joke!?

-COOH's smile widened.

<Zelkova> - Dusk, it's not a-
<-COOH> - Well I think it's funny! Such a small world, running into her boyfriend on the network like this, and he was trying to kill me too! Oh wait 'til I tell her THAT one-
:Dusk forces -COOH to the ground and is choking her!
<Dusk> - You wretched ****, you're why my Keiko's life has gone so wrong in the first place!
<Zelkova> - Dusk!
<Dusk> - If you weren't her sister, I'd kill you right here and now!!
<-COOH> - *grk* And yet... your hands are tied... aren't they? Kill me, and she'll... hate you... for-ev-errrrr! :D
<Dusk> - Yomiko, don't you-

-COOH's body unleashed a powerful blast at the mention of her real name, knocking Dusk off the bridge and into the pipes below as she jumped up in a fit of rage.

<-COOH> - NEVER CALL ME BY THAT NAME YOU SON OF A ****!! I'M NOT A GODDAMN JAP, NEVER HAVE BEEN, AND NEVER WILL BE!!!

Kaede's eyes shot wide open at this remark, and as she commented to Zelkova, -COOH dove at Dusk and began fighting him hand-to-hand.

<Kaede> - She just gets worse, and worse, every day... sir, I don't think-
<Zelkova> - Now now, she's just sick.
<Kaede> - ...You can't just explain away blatant racism like that!
<Zelkova> - Yes I can. Her family has a history of bipolar disorder, the only difference being that how it comes out is different with each member.
<Kaede> - Really?

Kaede was obviously incensed with this.

<Zelkova> - We both know -COOH flies between rage and ecstasy pretty easily, spiced up with an inability to restrain herself from speaking her mind and, well, I guess delusions might be the nicest way to put it. Keiko, on the other hand, is either incredibly delightful or insanely depressed, which her excessive clinginess exacerbates.
<Kaede> - And?
<Zelkova> - It's why Veronica can't be controlled and why Keiko needs Dusk more than water. Keiko sometimes ends up as -COOH's punching bag in real life, and the only thing that keeps her from becoming as murderous and dark as her sister is Dusk's love and affection for her. However, without Keiko, Veronica has no one in real life, and that could lead to self-destruction.
<Kaede> - Isn't that a fancier way of saying "That's just how she is"?
<Zelkova> - Well... yeah.
:Kaede sighs.
<Kaede> - Fine. I'll keep training her.
<Zelkova> - How far has she gotten anyway?
<Kaede> - ....

Kaede had forgotten to tell Zelkova that she had succeeded in summoning things yesterday due to his spur-of-the-moment investigation keeping him busy. Those summons, unfortunately, destroy a part of their environment in order to form bodies for those called to her.

<Zelkova> - So we should move this fight?
<Kaede> - Ye

Delta: Hidden Forbidden Holy Ground - The Hulle Granz Cathedral

<Kaede> - s. !!
<-COOH> - F*cking midget! I TOLD YOU NOT TO DO THAT!!
<Zelkova> - I can't have you hurting Tartarga! That doesn't do anyone any good.
<Dusk> - Luna?
<Zelkova> - Yes?

Dusk pinned down Veronica to catch his breath. He'd gotten used to Luna's instant teleportation to the point that he could very quickly assess new surroundings, almost like one would while they're dreaming.

<Dusk> - Why's the door ajar on the Cathedral?
<Zelkova> - !

Luna had never intended to send them to Hulle Granz, but a random field. How'd he screw such a simple transport up?

But no matter. This was intentional, for all anyone else knows.

<Zelkova> - I... don't know. It used to be like that naturally in R:1.
<-COOH> - So what!?
<Kaede> - Someone's inside.

Everyone looks in the door, seeing someone sitting in one of the front pews.

<Dusk> - ....
<-COOH> - Well!?
<Dusk> - He came back sooner than I thought.
<-COOH> - Oh my f*cking god, you haven't changed at all, always speaking in goddamn riddles and giving me the most vague **** imaginable! Next time I'm ripping out your trachea and eating it!
<Dusk> - Wha-
<-COOH> - LIKE SPAGHETTI!!
<Dusk> - And you haven't changed either you f*cking harpy, high-pitched and loud enough to obsolete Mosquitoes!
<-COOH> - That doesn't make any sense!
<Dusk> - It's more sensical than YOU'VE ever been ya twat!
<Zelkova> - It's like you're siblings! :)
<Dusk> - Well when you've dealt with this whore for years like I have, everything you say to her sounds like fighting words.
<?????> - You two are loud enough to wake the dead.
<Zelkova> - Oh!
<-COOH> - I thought you WERE dead!
<Kaede> - Sir, who is-
<Dusk> - It's Phoenix.
<Kaede> - ...who?
<Dusk> - Heh heh heh heh heh... who killed ya this time?

The man got up and walked down the center aisle, only a silhouette made by light from the stained-glass in the back marking his visual presence.

<Kaede> - !
<Zelkova> - Holy...!
<Dusk> - Damn!
<-COOH> - What the hell happened to you!?

He stood on one good leg, his glasses reflecting the light from outside the door.

<Ovan> - The pursuer... got me by surprise....

It will NEVER happen again!

...

Unknown field

<Keiko> - And they all lived happily ever after! The end!

The Chims all went crazy with joy around the floating bed. Only Haseo's head stuck out of the covers with a look that said "Please God, kill me now!"

Dusk finally returned.

<Dusk> - Honey, I'm home!
<Keiko> - Dusk!!

Keiko got out of bed, ran up to him and... well, you know.

<Dusk> - Haseo, I've brought someone back that wants to meet with you, but first, how did things....
<Keiko> - Oh! That's right, I didn't know when you were getting back, so-

Haseo sat up, and the covers fell off.

Dusk's eyes nearly shot out of his hands.

<Dusk> - Uhh...
<Haseo> - Don't look at me like that, I didn't know what else to do!
<Keiko> - It made him cozy enough!
<Dusk> - ...Haseo, get out of my jammies.
<Haseo> - Yeah....
<Keiko> - Are you mad?
<Dusk> - I just... wanna know one thing....
<Keiko> - ?

Anyone else would've asked if she had been cheating on him.

But Dusk knew that wasn't the case.

He was more concerned about the other men he put in her life.

<Dusk> - Do you make Kazuya do this too?
<Keiko> - Yes?
<Dusk> - Oh god....
<Keiko> - Whaddya mean, Dusk?
<Dusk> - Keiko, I know you get lonely and all, but you can't completely emasculate your company like that!
<Keiko> - But he looks so cute!
<Dusk> - That's not the point! Look at his face!
<Keiko> - ...oh....

Haseo, getting out of the bed, looked horrified and humiliated by this turn of events.

<Dusk> - Everyone in the Indigo knows how I feel about you, and what I'd do if anyone crossed you. The only reason he's in my clothes is because he thought I'd kill him if he turned you down!
<Keiko> - I'm sorry.

Dusk kissed her forehead and held her close.

<Dusk> - No, Keiko, there's no need for you to be sorry, you didn't know.
<Keiko> - But-
<Dusk> - Shhh. It's OK. I know why you did it.
<Keiko> - But I angered you-
<Dusk> - Yes, but I only got a little angry because I love you and it's painful for me to see you do these things in ignorance of why you get away with it.
<Keiko> - But I don't understand why men are so... self-conscious about these things! It doesn't make sense, it's just the three of us and the Chims!
<Dusk> - Well-
<Keiko> - And they don't see any problem with it! Why does it bother men so much!?
<Haseo> - It's humiliating, for one!
<Dusk> - Keiko, most men have an ego to protect. Even if they're alone, some guys won't do anything they consider harmful to their image. I mean if you want to talk about which gender's more vain, it's almost always the guys overall. Women beat them in certain obvious areas, but not in the grand scheme of things.
<Keiko> - Really?
<Dusk> - Oh yes. Just because they don't say anything doesn't mean you're not hurting them. Even if Haseo here were rolling around in mud naked, he wouldn't be nearly as humiliated as he is now.
<Haseo> - ...Yeah... let's say that's true.
<Keiko> - What about you Dusk?
<Dusk> - Me?
<Keiko> - What about your ego?
<Dusk> - I scrapped it long ago. Do you know why?
<Keiko> - ?

Dusk held her closer.

<Dusk> - Because I have something... someone far more important to protect.
<Keiko> - Who?

Dusk gave her a deep, loving kiss.

<Dusk> - You... my darling... little angel.
<Keiko> - Dusk....

Lost in each other, Haseo walked out as quietly and as quickly as he could, lest his presence ruin one of their thousands of moments together... but really, he just wanted to get the hell out of there.

Indigo "@HOME" - Dead end

Haseo's pupils shrunk to nothing as he stepped out of the portal.

The man that stood before him...

Long white coat, broken-up left arm and shriveled hand...

Orange-tinted circular glasses, cracked in the left lens...

A tall figure otherwise dressed in blue with white pants and an azure-colored scarf, a giant crack running through his right leg...

Could it really be...?

But the look on his face....

<Haseo> - Ovan?

Ovan sounded like he had to catch his breath before he spoke.

<Ovan> - How long has it been... Haseo?
<Haseo> - A... A few weeks, I think.
<Ovan> - Ah, good. Not as long... erk... as I'd feared.

As the surprise wore off, Haseo began to remember certain things...

like what Kiyone had told him.

Haseo gritted his teeth.

<Haseo> - Why?
<Ovan> - ?
<Haseo> - Why'd you kill Shino!? What's your connection to AI... why are YOU of all people Tri-Edge!? Why did... WHY DID YOU LIE TO ME OVAN!!?
:Ovan closes his eyes for a second, and begins to walk towards town.
<Haseo> - ANSWER ME!
<Ovan> - Come, Haseo.
<Haseo> - !?
<Ovan> - I must see your progress... you must show me what he's taught you....
<Haseo> - ....

...

Under dark green skies, sitting in a burnt desert in the background, Kazuya nurses his injuries from his "errand." He had told Dusk he had some other business to attend to with registering for the Sage Palace Tournament, but that was a lie.

He had broken into one of Zelkova's labs.

Despite meeting someone with the same idea, Kazuya escaped the encounter victorious, now cherishing what he stole.

<Kazuya> - As far as I'm concerned, you belonged to me when I beat you to a bloody pulp.
:Kazuya stares into the yellow orb.
<Kazuya> - You were free for the taking when your chosen one died.
:Kazuya bent over, his face closing in on the object.
<Kazuya> - And I came for you just as she made her move.
:Kazuya shoves the orb into his chest!
<Kazuya> - Now become part of me! FIDCHELL!!!

I've been working off and on on this log for months because I couldn't decide on which direction I wanted to take log 16. This must've been the sixth or seventh time I wrote the thing, but I woke up with both the urge and inspiration to write this damn story for the first time in three months. Hopefully I didn't waste it and make a crap chapter.

I want to say a few things... but I think I'll forgo the commentary for awhile and see what I think of this new log first. I keep thinking I just ****ed over continuity somewhere and I just haven't figured out where yet. :\

Okay, couple serious questions while I'm writing log 17:

1. Should I continue with AIDA Kuhn as a potential serious threat, or kill him off in his gatekeeper position? Even if I'm right, and he is accurate as to how an AIDA-possessed Kuhn would be portrayed, he is rather offensive to the senses.

If you're still reading this after I had the main character impregnate herself by raping a quadriplegic, the answer's probably going to be yes anyway, but I'm saying this because things could take an ecchi-related turn until he's taken out. It's not gonna hit all at once either, it's gonna start out small and escalate until people figure out something's wrong. It'll take at least four logs until that arc concludes.

2. Is my portrayal of women offensive in any way? I'm not talking about Veronica and Keiko of course; crazy knows no gender, and Keiko... that's all I'm gonna say.

I will admit this however; I feel like I've a better handle on Kiyone than Ovan. Everything I try to write for him feels completely out of character.

3. I had the idea a couple weeks ago to use Dusk and Keiko as main characters in an actual story instead of a fanfic, spanning their lives from meetup to marriage (possibly a little beyond). Besides being my little fantasy, it would be extremely difficult getting into their background in a country I know admittedly little about, so I don't think I can publish Log X1 as-is. I've done no work on this tale beside coming up with a working title. The question, of course, is if anyone else would read it but me.

I honestly think this fic can't get any worse after the scene with Veronica and whats-his-name...

What do you mean offensive?

I have no idea. I was just a bit scared because this was the first time I've included female characters in a story I've let others read is all, and sometimes I get confused on the subjects of gender traits and age-appropriate behavior.
GyppyGirl2021 wrote:I honestly think this fic can't get any worse after the scene with Veronica and whats-his-name...
Nice to know Kazuya's so memorable. -_-

And as for things getting worse, they won't be... sexually. What would have happened had I gone through with the AIDA Kuhn scenario was that through the grace of the corrupted AIDA, Magus's influence Kuhn exerted on Kiyone in log 15 would've been amped up big time, spreading across the entirety of The World. After some godawful scenes that need not be described now involving a LOT of the women in R:2 (who would've become Kuhn's army in the end) and three logs, Veronica would've put a stop to Kuhn and freed him from AIDA's grasp.

The "new" plan... well the next log IS finished, so why not read it and find out, hm?

Log 17: Provocation

Theta: Hidden Forbidden in Heat - Sugar Mansion Sif Berg

Kazuya, on his hands and knees in the desert, was overwhelmed in his latest endeavor. His shirt and jacket were burned away where he pushed in the fourth Phase's essence; a huge burn mark was his reward for attempting to absorb the Prophet against its will.

It appeared for a moment that even for Kazuya, some things are just plain impossible. That thought evaporated as his smile re-emerged, however, as after all, he IS Kazuya.

<Kazuya> - You're a stubborn mule, I'll give you that.
:Kazuya stares into the sand.
<Kazuya> - But a mere AI cannot outpower those of flesh forever. I will win this fight... but first I need to catch a fish with a trout and some clovers.
:Kazuya's arms give out, dropping him face-first onto the sand.
<Kazuya> - Come out little fishies, Kazuya has a treat for you!...

The Phase Bullet gave in to his fatigue, falling in a rather unbecoming position after two days of torment.

...

Two weeks later...

Unknown field

<Dusk> - Yo.
<Haseo> - What's going on?
<Dusk> - The Forest of Pain has opened up again. You're coming with us.
<Haseo> - Us?
<Keiko> - Yep!
:Keiko jumps out of her bed.
<Keiko> - I'm coming too!
<Haseo> - ...ummm... are you, sure about this Dusk?
<Dusk> - You underestimating my girl?

"Is he... glaring at me?"

<Dusk> - Heh... I might baby her a lot, but it's because I love her to death, not because she's weak.
<Haseo> - Tch, yeah, ri-
<Dusk> - I won't have you talking down to her. She doesn't fight because I'd rather Luna stay ignorant.
<Haseo> - Of what?
:Dusk smiles.
<Dusk> - Wouldn't he love to know!
<Haseo> - ....

...

Indigo "@HOME" - Chaos Gate

<Haseo> - Wait.
<Dusk> - ?
<Haseo> - It just struck me. Why, exactly, IS Keiko coming with us?
<Dusk> - Because she wants to.
<Haseo> - And?
<Dusk> - ....
<Haseo> - You two have been acting weird for the past two weeks.
<Dusk> - And just what would make you say that?
<Haseo> - Because every other time I come here, Kazuya's around somewhere, and he hasn't been for awhile now, AND both of you have been mopey the entire time! I ask you about it and you don't say a damn word!
:Keiko looks away.
<Dusk> - Then how about we trade?
<Haseo> - ?
<Dusk> - Tell me what happened with you and Ovan.
<Haseo> - I'd rather not.
:Dusk smirks.
<Dusk> - Phoenix kicked your ass, huh.
<Haseo> - ....
:Haseo hangs his head in shame.
<Dusk> - Makes sense. Kazuya's not exactly the-
<Haseo> - He called me... a disappointment.
:Dusk puts his hand on Haseo's shoulder.
<Dusk> - Ovan's as frustrated as we all are, probably moreso given what's at stake for him.
<Haseo> - For him?
<Dusk> - Do you know the truth behind why he started the Twilight Brigade?
<Haseo> - ...how could you ever know the truth behind him....
:Dusk turns from Haseo toward the Chaos Gate.
<Dusk> - Once we have a path into Balbol Museum, you should look up his history with this game. While you oppose his personality... I seem to be the opposition to his very existence.
<Haseo> - What does that mean?
<Keiko> - We should go, Dusk.
<Dusk> - Yeah-
<Keiko> - Um, hold on.
<Dusk> - ?
<Keiko> - Someone's knocking at the door in real life.
:Keiko goes AFK.
<Haseo> - ? Doesn't she have a sister to answer that?
<Dusk> - Veronica never answers the door, says it could be a kidnapper looking for some easy jailbait and makes Keiko answer it instead.
<Haseo> - ...huh.
<Dusk> - ...yeah.

...

*knock* *knock*

Why the f*ck's Keiko knocking on my door at this ungodly hour!?

"What is it!? It's... 5 in the goddamn afternoon! I want some f*cking sleep you f*cking whore!"

"You have a visitor, Yomiko-"

"No, Veronica! VERONICA! Must I spell it!? Must I etch it in your forehead with a knife!?"

"No, uh, could you come out here?"

You ****, ordering me around, this better be f*cking important or I swear to god I'll as-!?

"Who the f*ck is this ****?"

"My name is Kyouko Kaga, miss Veronica. It is an... umm... to finally meet you."

Graceful sidestep, ya hag.

"And how the f*ck do I know you?"

"Lord Zelkova is worried about you."

"!? How do you know midget!?"

"You know me as Kaede, -COOH. Certainly you must recognize my voice by now."

"Oh, right, his servant, of course, I should've known by the lack of soul that you're his drone. Why the hell're you here in person?"

"Why haven't you been to The World lately?"

"I have my reasons."

"And?"

"And he can go shove a banana in his ass! I'm not going back!"

"May I ask why?"

"...."

"Um, miss Kaga?"

"Yes Keiko?"

"It's because Kazuya didn't get her pregnant before he...."

"Don't say it ****. Don't. Say it!"

"So you lied, then?"

"I didn't lie! I just... I got optimistic over a weak-ass cripple's sperm is all! I should've known it was as weak as he is!"

"You've been mourning him, then-"

"He's not gone! He's hiding from me, that's all! Coward won't face me anymore after failing so f*cking hard, and I did all the goddamn work for him too! It's not like I gave him a hard job!"

"Veronica-"

"Dammit... just get away from me!"

*SLAM*

"I'm sorry miss Kaga."

"No, it's alright, Lord Zelkova's sure she'll come back eventually."

"Maybe. I don't know what I'd do if I lost (Dusk)."

"What do you see in him?"

"(Dusk)?"

"Lord Zelkova says you two have been together virtually all of your lives... I'm curious as to where such a strong bond could come from.

"He's just... he's always been so good to me, and he takes care of me, I mean... I don't really think about it. I just love him. That's the way it's always been."

"Always?"

"His first memory was the first time we met. We'd just moved into the neighborhood and his parents came to 'check us out,' as he puts it. He came across me in my room after my sister tore the head off of one of my dollies. I was just sitting on the floor when he asked me about it, and I started crying. He said he just did what his mom did for him at the time, that he hugged me close and apologized for not being able to fix my dollie. I didn't get it, but I needed someone because I knew no one else cared, so I just held onto him until he had to leave."

"...."

"Oh! I almost forgot! Did you want any-"

"No, I didn't plan on staying long."

"Oh, OK. It's just that we don't get many visitors, so I forget my manners sometimes."

"Please continue."

"Well, he's been my best friend and future hubby ever since. My parents had neglected me up to that point, and Dusk says it's because they said they lamented the fact they had created another headcase... but once I had Dusk, things got better because I guess I became normal or something. The thing is, I was too young to remember any of that, so I don't really remember a time when my parents hated me."

"And you're sure he told you the truth?"

"Uh huh. Even if the Great Plague ever tampered with my memory, she'd never be able to mess with my diaries, since they only exist on paper. I check them sometimes if my memory is foggy or if I say something that (Dusk) thinks is odd. Umm, if I may?"

"Yes?"

"Why do you want to know about (Dusk) and I anyway?"

"From what Zelkova told me of your relationship, it seemed a bit too much like a fairy tale. I was curious about it, since I haven't had the chance to speak to either of you like this before."

"Well I'm always happy to talk about (Dusk), though it does make me a bit anxious."

"About what?"

"When he's going to show up with a ring! He says he's still looking for something absolutely perfect, and it won't be 'some generic diamond' when we finally meet again. I keep telling him a diamond's fine, but he won't listen... he's known forever that I don't like diamonds, but I haven't told him anything else. I guess that's why it's taking him so long."

"I see. I should get going."

"Well, please tell Luna I said hi, and that if he'd like to join us in the Forest of Pain today, he should pop in!"

"The Forest of Pain?"

"I'm not sure why Dusk wants to go there, but he's taking Haseo, and I'm going too."

"I'm sure he has other plans today, but thanks."

"Oh, OK! Well, goodbye-"

"Wait."

"?"

"Veronica's your big sister, right?"

"Yes?"

"It's just that... you called her by name."

"She doesn't always particularly like being reminded that we're related. Calling her by her real name is bad enough, but if I address her appropriately, she says things like 'Drop the Jap crap you' and then just goes off calling me all sorts of names."

"I see... well, please try and take care of yourself, at least."

"You too."

Indigo "@HOME" - Chaos Gate

<Keiko> - I'm back!
<Dusk> - What was that about?
<Keiko> - Kaede stopped by, she wanted to know about my sister.
<Dusk> - Really? That's a surprise.
<Keiko> - I guess Luna's really worried about her, and I am too. She looks thinner than before.
<Dusk> - How's that possible? Isn't she already a rail?
<Keiko> - Dusk!
<Dusk> - I'm just saying she's already impossibly thin in real life.
<Keiko> - Still, she needs to eat something. If you ask me, even if she did get pregnant like she wanted, she's in no condition to have a baby.
<Dusk> - Yes, well we should get moving finally. Are we ready?
<Haseo> - Yeah.
<Keiko> - Yes!
<Dusk> - Well then...

Sigma: Hidden Forbidden Sin Realm - World of Sin, Ran Hati

The Lost Ground that serves as the entrance to the Forest of Pain. From the entrance Platform, a small grass-topped cliff juts out high above a vast forest below that mostly appears dead. Mountains line only some of the background, with some strange rock formations near the cliff. Behind the Platform is a rock wall with more forest above it, and a gate blocking a tunnel that leads to the previous Forest of Pain that Taihaku and Haseo conquered.

The new forest, now under a sunset sky instead of the previous daytime sky, can be accessed by a Warp Point near the edge of the cliff. Haseo remembered it being another Platform in the lost ground's previous incarnation that served as the exit point of the first Forest, and then Keiko's guest arrived.

<Zelkova> - Hi!
<Keiko> - Wow. I didn't think Kaede would tell him so fast.
<Zelkova> - She didn't. That's why I had her get wired! :D
<Dusk> - ...so I take it you invited him Keiko.
<Keiko> - Yes.
<Dusk> - -_-
<Keiko> - Wait, how does that wire thing work?
<Dusk> - One of the first big video streaming sites kicked off with its founder wearing a camera 24/7 everywhere he went, broadcasting his life in realtime. It was only possible because the city he was in had so many open wi-fi hotspots to use. I'm assuming you must've simply made use of some trusting and ignorant locals, Luna?
<Zelkova> - Pretty much.
:Dusk sighs.
<Haseo> - Spying on people like that... I liked Moon Tree better when they were just a bunch of unrealistic pacifists.
<Dusk> - Well you may as well come along anyway, since I'm sure this entire forest is bugged too. I'd really rather not have to constantly hide our presence for 100 blocks of deadly wood.
<Haseo> - Wait, aren't parties limited to three these days because of hardware problems or whatever?
<Zelkova> - That's a CC Corp-created limit. Who cares? :P
<Haseo> - Well... tch. Ya got me there.
<Dusk> - Really now Haseo, haven't you learned to think a hundred miles away from the box yet?
<Haseo> - ....
<Dusk> - Let's go before real nightfall catches up to us.
<Keiko> - Right!

...

The Sage Palace Arena

As the commentator went on his usual spiel, four fighters entered the now golden ring, which appeared to be situated over the World of Sin, Ran Hati. Due to the oddities going on in Endrance's battles, the decision was made by CC Corporation, after much prodding from their own SD2, to finally have the stands in a separate locale.

Endrance, unlike in the Holy Palace, now fought alone. While Taihaku was part of Icolo, Alkaid felt helpless enough against Sirius, whom also declined to join. Saku tried to join, but she had no beef with Taihaku, and no Epitaph. Endrance had to force her into the stands before every fight thus far.

He had reached the finals. Standing before him was a previously unknown team by the name blackish white. To Endrance, their identities were fairly irrelevant anyway. They had yet to speak at any point in the tournament to challenge the Sage Emperor, but what he did know, and all he really cared about, was that these three were fully engulfed by corrupted AIDA. They each wore white trenchcoats, had blackened bodies with red cracks underneath, and to top it off, pale white faces and black eyes with green pupils.

The leader of the three had red spiky hair, and was the tallest of the three. He had a scythe on his back, whereas the other two were Lord Partizans with lances, their tips large and drill-like. The leader's weapon appeared to have a handle of bone, the blade decorated as such with a skull on the tang. He also had a blackened spider mark on his left shoulder. Nothing about spiders had appeared on AIDA-PC's up to this point, but the sixth Phase paid it no mind.

As the announcer sounded the start of the match, Endrance made a quick decision to end things here and now, using three extraction slashes on each of the enemies before they could draw their weapons, let alone get into a position that wasn't simply standing up. The cuts through their bodies starting at the abdomen left one side of the body or the other hanging from the whole, spewing black dots into the air.

As with Sirius, this didn't work. In fact, these guys recovered with little effort, unlike him. They didn't even flinch, not from being hurt, nor from the rejuvenation process.

<Endrance> - ...stubborn....
<Signaless> - ....

Finally drawing their weapons, the team's Partizans leapt up into the air for a Lv.3 Art, only to fly into and be cast aside by a guard break from Endrance that sent them into the fiery battle fence. The leader shrugged off the hits he took from their flying bodies as he stared down the Tempting Rose.

Endrance slowly walked toward his adversary, the leader doing the same. They stared into each other's eyes as they approached, neither flinching. Their concentration was absolute in the last moments before a quickdraw of Arts ensued.

<Endrance> - Razor's Edge!

His Skill Trigger unleashing a small shockwave that appeared to stun Signaless, Endrance won this duel and quadrupled the number of slashes from his original attack. Hacked apart, Signaless's expression again went unchanged as he rejuvenated, his allies just staring at him. He had lost a staring contest with a "cat"... hardly winnable in the first place, but it was also only one battle lost.

Signaless hopped back. The Partizans ran behind Endrance, and the three stepped into a triangle formation. It was at this point that the now former Holy Emperor realized he couldn't move.

<Endrance> - What is this...!

He'd been careless.

"Automatic generation of Morale...."

Signaless and company leapt up into a newly formed night sky, his allies disappearing. In front of a large moon, having to put in a bit of effort, he pulled a new scythe of black energy with a white aura out of hammerspace. Watching from the darkness, Endrance was seemingly helpless as Signaless slashed at him from above, an energy wave being launched from the blade. The explosion it set off was enormous, fire engulfing the entire ring and the monitors.

Endrance had been attacked by a corrupted version of the Flick Reaper's Divine Awakening, Plasma Blade. The announcer went off on a glorious tangent, praising the attackers. The boys in the crowd cheered as Endrance's fangirls let loose their sadness and fury at this turn of events, thinking their idol may have lost.

Endrance rose from the ashes of the recognizable ring, glaring at the descending Signaless and his nameless minions.

The crowd erupted in nothing but cheers, the announcer shocked that the former Emperor hadn't even lost his footing to such a powerful attack. Balmung, watching from the Serpent of Lore, smirked at the sight. Evidently, the Phases, and therefore Epitaph Users, were more powerful than he had imagined.

Endrance motioned for his adversaries to bring it on, and bring it on they did....

The Forest of Pain - 50th block

The Forest didn't look much different from the ground than it did from above overall. The biggest diffences were the giant pendulum, scythe-like blades that hung from chains of unknown origin in the cloudy skies above, and the constant persistence of brick-and-mortar ruins that largely created the path of the player accessible maze. The collision detection did not allow players to run into the woods proper.

The four-person party had just made it to the final block of the tenth phase after a few hours, phase in the Forest referring to a group of five blocks, four with normal monsters and treasure and one more basic block with a required boss fight, a barrier that only goes down in the absence of the boss monster, a save point and the requisite escape Platforms for each block. Haseo had been doing most of the fighting, with Luna helping out on his own whims. Keiko had been serving as healer and Steam equipment user, using Skills learned from her character's time as a Harvest Cleric and the power granted her by the Chims respectively. Dusk gathered treasure and trinkets for the group instead of participating in combat, saying he had no love of random battles.

Having reached what Octavian told him was the halfway point, Dusk felt the need to comment.

<Dusk> - This dungeon is a bit easier than I expected.
<Zelkova> - You've been absent for all of the fighting, how do you know what the difficulty is?
<Dusk> - Octavian tells me.
<Zelkova> - ....
<Dusk> - You don't need to know *everything*, Luna.
<Keiko> - Well, at least the storyline's been good! :)
<Haseo> - Yeah, but it doesn't make any sense since we skipped whatever came before it.
<Keiko> - Well maybe you did, but Kazuya, Dusk and I do a LOT of adventuring. How do you think we got in without any hacking? :D
<Haseo> - ...I never thought about it.
<Zelkova> - I just assumed Dusk picked all the locks, so to speak.
:Dusk stands out in front of everyone, blocking them with his arm.
<Dusk> - Stop.

Dusk halted the group as they came across a large boss room that had no boss in it. There wasn't a barrier preventing passage, either.

What there was, however, was a sense of foreboding. Someone was watching them from inside the room, unseen.

<Zelkova> - You sense that too?
<Dusk> - Yeah... I feel an Indigo presence, an intense one.
<Keiko> - Who is it?
<Dusk> - ...I don't know. Stay back, love, I don't think they're friendly.
<Zelkova> - We have a new candidate?
<Dusk> - No, what WE have is a-
<?????> - HELLFIRE!!
<Dusk> - !?
<Keiko> - Ack!

Haseo, seeing the blue-white streak's direction, quickly stepped in front of Keiko to protect her from an unknown Lv.3 Twin Blade Art in place of Dusk, taking him by surprise. Apparently Haseo had been able to see their adversary the entire time, and was eyeing it waiting for the strike. The attacker kicked itself away from the group off Haseo's guard and upon landing, took bad posture and just stared into the bone visor's light.

Standing in front of the Indigo group was a young woman in a blue outfit, with thigh-high white boots and a large butterfly decoration sitting on the lowest point of her back. She wore no sleeves, and had green unkempt hair that matched her dual swords in color, each with spiral patterns making up the blades.

There was also her blank expression, made haunting by light red eyes.

<Dusk> - Who are you? Why do you attack my Keiko?
<Natsume> - Kite?
<Dusk> - What?
<Natsume> - Don't you recognize me Kite? I'm your one true love, remember?
<Dusk> - I only look a little like him, but I assure you I'm not-
<Natsume> - We slew Cubia and Morganna together, remember? You taught me how to play The World... you took me under your wing, remember? You protected me, you trusted me, and I trusted you... and loved you... you were my hero, and I was your heroine... right?
<Zelkova> - What're you talking about? Kite fought alongside BlackRo-
<Natsume> - WE BOTH HATED THAT ****! ALWAYS IN THE WAY NEVER THINKING OF OTHERS!! WHAT THE HELL KIND OF NERVE DOES IT TAKE TO STAND IN THE WAY OF TRUE LOVE!?
<Keiko> - Dusk, who is this? What's she talking about?
<Dusk> - All of this because of unrequited love... you've truly lost it if you believe ME to be that power-bottom slave.
<Natsume> - What? You... you don't love me anymore Kite?
<Dusk> - I'm not Kite you Aura-loving slut! I just look like him! Who *I* am is Dusk, and the only woman I have and will ever love is Keiko! To come between me and her, is to kick in the gates of Hell!
<Natsume> - ....
<Dusk> - ?

Natsume just stares, appearing as if she hit upon a revelation. Her voice began to tremble as tears poured from her eyes.

<Natsume> - I know... you're just afraid of how I'd react to you abandoning me. And it's OK, because I forgive you. I know you've been tricked by whoever this new whore is, and once I kill her like I did Akira...
:Natsume changes weapons and charges at Keiko with a terrible smile on her face!
<Natsume> - THIS IS FOR YOU, KIIIITE!!!
<Keiko> - !!

Not having time to think, Dusk ran at Natsume, arms in front and bladed fingers turned at her, ready to cleave her head into so many slices of flesh and bone. Natsume's ghostly new blades were in a similar position, ready to cleave Keiko's neck. Her sight blinded by love and hate, she leapt at Dusk at the last minute, electricity spewing from the ensuing attack.

Natsume landed behind him with a flip, and then felt ill as reality came back to her for only a second. She could hear his hair, his mind, and his bone visor fall into the dead grass.

She won the duel, and to her horror, took her beloved's head off.

<Natsume> - K... Kite?

Having poured all of her strength into the attack, Dusk's assumption of her as a potential Indigo was proven correct... in the worst possible way. Natsume assumed a look of horror as she turned, and bore witness to the aftermath of her own rage.

<Keiko> - Dusk?
:Keiko runs over and kneels down to his body.
<Keiko> - Hey... why won't you speak?
<Natsume> - GET AWAY FROM HIM!
:Natsume kicks Keiko aside!
<Haseo> - Hey!
:Haseo draws his Scythe Shouxiao and slashes at Natsume, making her jump back!
:Zelkova runs over to check on Keiko as Haseo steps between Dusk and Natsume.
<Haseo> - I don't know how the hell you managed to take out Dusk, but if you think for a second you can do the same to the rest of us, you really are out of your mind!
<Natsume> - How DARE you people make me hurt Kite!! WHAT DID WE EVER DO TO YOU!?
:Zelkova helps Keiko to a sitting position.
<Zelkova> - Keiko, are you OK?
<Keiko> - Dusk... pick up....
<Zelkova> - ....

Zelkova started to realize what had happened. It was a terrible reminder of just how dangerous both The World and its players could be, as his scans of Natsume's PC revealed she wasn't infected with any known AIDA type. Kazuya, the first Itsuki-type, was driven to power through necessity; Natsume, apparently, by madness.

It was becoming more apparent as her face continued to contort somewhere between the outer limits of hate, and the utter depths of despair. Natsume's strength had grown exponentially from her days as a beginner in R:1 to a terrible result.

However, Natsume's feelings were irrelevant, as Keiko had lost herself to panic. The tears and fear on her face did not accurately tell the story of the turmoil in the poor girl's heart, thinking that the love of her life just might be dying before her very eyes. Her attempts at calling his cell phone were failing; each ring, and each redial, sent her further over the edge.

<Keiko> - Pick up your phone, Dusk!
<Haseo> - What's going on, Zelkova?
<Zelkova> - Dusk... I think he's just been knocked out.
<Keiko> - Pick up, (Dusk)!
<Zelkova> - There's no need to freak out like-
<Keiko> - Why won't you pick up!? Pick up! PICK UP, (DUSK)!
<Zelkova> - Keiko, I'm sure he'll be OK!
:Keiko grabs Zelkova by the collar.
<Keiko> - NO! HE'S HURT! WE HAVE TO HELP HIM!! HE CAN'T DIE LIKE KAZUYA!!
<Zelkova> - But Keiko-
<Keiko> - I CAN'T LOSE MY (DUSK)!!! I CAN'T, I CAN'T, I- I- I...
:Keiko grabs her head as if in massive pain!
<Keiko> - AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

...

The Sage Palace Arena

Using the power of his Epitaph to power his PC up, Endrance was able to hold off the Partizans and deal serious damage to their leader, but the damage so far had all been statistical; anything that had actually hurt any of the three had been rejuvenated with ease whenever they struck a blow on Endrance. They had also proven exquisite in their ability to corner a target and get the necessary hits to regain their HP and SP in order to stave off being exposed as cheaters when either stat reached 0.

Staring the three down, his armor and clothing beaten and ripped, the former Demon Emperor took a stand.

<Endrance> - You three... are truly strong. Even without your AIDA, I might've had a problem.

At that moment, a large earthquake appeared to strike the Arena, even shaking the floating ring and the giant monitors. The three AIDA fighters fell to their knees under the influence of a massive shock that scared the commentator almost to the point of speaking out of character... even though he really was as flamboyant in real life at times.

As it passed, Endrance's pupils shrank to nearly nothing, his emotions proving shakier than his footing. He heard something, a sound that scared even him, and felt an overwhelming power building in intensity somewhere in the network. Combined with it was a sadness and fury the likes of which shook him to his core.

He looked over into the stands and saw Saku, as scared and confused as he was; even without her Epitaph, she had enough pull over The World to sense the coming terror, and looked to Endrance desperately for guidance.

"Run."

His small prayer of her being able to read his lips was answered as she nodded in acknowledgement, and logged off the network entirely. While the quake was short-lived, the sound it triggered dug up an awful memory of his time in R:1... at the end of his first life with Mia...

"...when she revealed herself as part of the Cursed Wave...."

<Endrance> - I must apologize to you. I still held out hope for a merciful end... but now that time is against us all, the only thing I can do...
:Endrance's eyes become cat-like!
<Endrance> - is make it quick.

With the summoning of Macha, the AIDA-PC's were given no time to react. The crowd cheered madly for the former Holy Emperor over this new, flashier instant kill method that as far as they knew actually shocked The World proper. It was considered a definite improvement over the odd, drawn out death he gave Sirius.

For a moment, the denizens of The World forgot about the panic of the wave.

For one more moment, The World still held onto peace, before chaos would take its wretched hold.

Chaos, taking the form of a lovebird wronged.

-----

And thus kicks off a part of the story I've had planned for years now! There're a couple changes that never appeared before, Dusk getting PK'ed by Natsume being the trigger, the whole thing starting in the Forest of Pain, and Natsume not starting out as an Indigo being the major ones, but this is essentially the first of a couple of parts I've been waiting a long time to write. Hopefully it's not too boring, and with any luck, I made Keiko memorable enough for this log to have some kind of impact.

I realize the real life portion might a bit hard to read, and I can clarify if need be, but I don't like cluttering those parts with details at all. Hopefully how the characters act in those parts, and how they talk about things, make things clear as to who's who.

Cranked out two logs today, but only one gets posted for now (there's a town square description that needs to be filled in for log 19 that I don't feel like writing right now; I'm starving to death and I wanna move on to log 20).

-----

Only a few years ago...

Keiko threw on a coat and ran, jogged, and walked through the streets of the city on an ever-so-appropriately rainy night after her parents went to sleep. After numerous puddles, wind, tripping at one point, and another ever-so-appropriate car driving through a thick puddle in the road, Keiko got to Dusk's house, soaked pretty much to the bone. Her one rational thought was that if Dusk's parents saw her, they'd call her parents and this would all be for naught.

So what else was there to do but call Dusk's cell and hope he picks up?

"Keiko?"

"I'm... outside your window."

Dusk checked, and saw a very wet girl out there, weakly smiling. Shutting the phone off, Dusk opened the window and invited her in.

He didn't ask questions... he didn't say anything, really. He just led her to the bathroom and helped her get her waterlogged clothes off before running the shower. It was Winter, and she needed not only to wash the dirt off, but to warm up. As was usual for them, but not really anyone else they knew, the lovebirds took their showers together. It was never about sexuality, but more that, after what they called the "Love You Incident," they didn't hide much of anything from each other.

With their final shower together over and done with, Dusk led Keiko straight to his bed. She'd sneezed several times in the bathroom, leading Dusk to tease her about catching a cold. He fetched some spare pajamas she had left over there, as Keiko stayed the night as often as Dusk once did at her place. Bundling her up under the covers, he reached under the nightstand for one of her favorite bedtime books when Dusk stopped dead in his tracks.

"What's the matter?"

"I... just had a better idea."

Reaching into the closet, Dusk got a spare blanket, red with black lining, and crawled into bed with his beloved, spread the new covering over both of them.

"Gotta take care of that cold, little miss sickie."

"I don't have a co-"

She sneezed, making Dusk chuckle a bit. He wrapped his arm around her and kissed her head, making her blush.

"It's hardly the first time I've cared for you like this."

"(Dusk)... do you still love me?"

"...Yes."

"Do you think... you'll always love me?"

"..."

A tear ran down Dusk's cheek.

"It wasn't all that long ago in the grand scheme of things... that a foolhardy, violent little tyke met a girl who knew nothing but constant sadness.

When the boy met the girl, he got to know a calm that was completely foreign to him, and a peace that only comes by having a good friend by your side.

When the girl met the boy, she learned of the joys a good friend can bring, a happiness no one can achieve on their own."

Dusk... began to cry.

"And now, the day has come when they're to be torn apart forever, and all they have to show for it, is that they've traded the problems they started out with.

The girl is angry when those that love her, refusing to understand the logic of why, and tearing them apart when they try to help her understand.

The boy... can barely form a coherent thought anymore, 'cause the jerk can't get through one dang story without blubbering."

His tears were joined by Keiko's.

"What I'm trying to say is... I love you.

I always will love you.

I will never forget you, and I will always long for you.

I know I shouldn't tell you this, that'd it'd be easier if we put each other behind us as soon as possible, but I... I just can't."

Dusk collapsed on her shoulder, soaking it anew.

"I can't forget you... I don't want to forget you... I won't!

There will come a day when we'll be free to make our own choices, and when that day comes, I'll come find you, and we'll be together forever."

"(Dusk)... don't you dare say that if you don't mean it."

"I do... I swear on all that is holy that I will find you again, and I will ask you to marry me on that day, even if I must wait until the next life to do it!"

"! (Dusk)...!"

"So long as you love me, so long as you need me, I will stay by your side, whether it be physically or in spirit. I won't leave you, because... I...."

Keiko wrapped her arm around him, and pressed his head further against her shoulder.

"Then I'll wait for you."

"?"

Keiko took Dusk's one free hand and embraced it with hers.

"I'll wait, as long as it takes.

I need you...

...just as you need me."

Log 18: Savior

The Forest of Pain - 50th block

Zelkova began to awaken; his stirring caught Haseo's attention.

<Haseo> - You awake?
<Zelkova> - Y-yeah....

He got to his feet, rubbing his eyes and trying to keep his balance on an apparent small bump in the landscape. When Zelkova opened his eyes a little, the shock of the sight made them fly open the rest of the way.

The Forest of Pain had been destroyed, fragments of land and wall sitting in the middle of space. The background was lined with dark violet clouds, perhaps a background generated by whatever attack had obliterated the 50th block. Luna saw that the Platform was intact, but nothing else was, really. He looked back, and saw he'd been laying against a small chunk of wall. To his left, Haseo looked a bit roughed up but OK, staring at something...

<Zelkova> - Keiko!?

It looked like a humongous red Chim, its outer two legs replaced with arms that had fat, almost paw-like hands at the ends. They were tucked into some kind of cradling position, though whatever was in its arms wasn't visible from the ground. Instead of an angry face, it was one of deep sadness (for a Chim), and the gigantic shuriken on its back rotated slowly clockwise.

Worse yet, many Chim Assassins, red Chim Chims with no sphere over their heads and dressed in ninja outfits with their own body-sized shuriken on each of their backs, were floating in the air around it. They appeared to be guarding it as the larger creature wailed in pain.

When Zelkova targeted it, only one name popped up:

"Chim Goddess"

<Zelkova> - Oh my....
<Haseo> - You're awake.
<Zelkova> - I can see why I was kept in the dark.
<Haseo> - Dusk told me all about this.
<Zelkova> - ? Why?
<Haseo> - Octavian told him to.
<Zelkova> - Oh....

Again with Octavian.

<Haseo> - Dusk said I need to watch over Keiko until he comes back, since Kazuya's not around and all.
<Zelkova> - How do you know he's even alive?
<Haseo> - Keiko's waiting on him. If he were dead, she would know it, and begin a contingency plan embedded into her data.
<Zelkova> - What plan?
<Haseo> - He wouldn't tell me-

The Chims and Keiko began to move; their destination appeared to be a dark red portal that showed up in the southern sky.

They were trying to leave.

<Zelkova> - I thought you said he was alive?
<Haseo> - That's what HE said! I don't know anymore than what I was told!
<Zelkova> - Most Indigo don't, sadly.
<Haseo> - Well where the hell do you think she's going!?

Luna received a flash mail as if on que; it was Kaede.

"Master Zelkova, an unidentified phenomena has appeared in front of Tartarga! Please return ASAP!"

<Zelkova> - She went to Netslum... huh.
<Haseo> - Well don't just stand there, let's-

Netslum Tartarga - Bridge

Kaede, manning the terminal,

<Haseo> - go!-what the f*ck!?
<Zelkova> - Sorry, no one else likes that either. ^_^'
<Kaede> - We're receiving an audio signal, Lord Zelkova, but I can't pinpoint its source.
<Zelkova> - Interesting. Let's hear it.
<Keiko> - Luna... I'm sorry....

To Zelkova's surprise, Keiko was aware enough to communicate.

<Zelkova> - Sorry?
<Keiko> - ...that I broke the forest.
<Zelkova> - Keiko, that wasn't your fault-
<Keiko> - But I brought Dusk here because I thought you'd have a better chance of helping him here.
<Zelkova> - ? Is that what you've got in your arms?
<Keiko> - Uh huh....

She was obviously on the verge of tears.

<Keiko> - Please help us, Luna... I'm scared!
<Zelkova> - ...Kaede?
<Kaede> - Of course.

Kaede moved aside for Netslum's master; he proceeded to warp Dusk's fragile body and the diced-off half of his head to his experimental chamber.

<Zelkova> - Wait here.
<Keiko> - OK.

Zelkova immediately warped. Keiko's voice wasn't getting any better; if that thing was a creation of AIDA, even an uncorrupt AIDA, he might not have much time before she loses all control. Sure, they were over a barren desert right now, but the Chim Goddess used its own power to come to this area, and it could just as easily leave with it as well.

And if it left with those augmented Chim Assassins, well... Luna had no time for a personal threat assessment; he set an automated program into motion so he could focus strictly on Dusk's recovery.

<Keiko> - Haseo?
<Haseo> - Uh-yeah?
<Keiko> - I-I'm sorry about the other day. I didn't mean to humiliate you like that! I-I thought w-we were having fun.
<Haseo> - Keiko, it's OK.

Her tears were obviously starting to come out now; the Chim Goddess was beginning to cry.

<Keiko> - No I embarrassed you! I'm-
<Haseo> - Don't apologize, really! Just...

Comforting someone like this wasn't exactly Haseo's forte, but the circumstances demanded either he try to console her now, or face her wrath later.

Not much of a choice, he thought.

<Haseo> - Just try to think positive, okay? Dusk is tough as all hell; if anyone can survive this, it'll be him.
<Keiko> - Are... Are you sure?
<Haseo> - Yeah.
<Kaede> - Keiko?
<Keiko> - Miss Kaga?
<Kaede> - Where's your sister?
<Keiko> - In her room... why?
<Kaede> - Is there any way you can talk to her for a bit until Zelkova's finished?
<Keiko> - I don't think so... she hates me... I don't know why-
<Kaede> - Keiko, I'm sure that's not true!
<Keiko> - She's never taken any pity on me in my whole life! She's always been hard on me, this wouldn't be any different!
<Haseo> - That's not true.
<Keiko> - Wha?
<Haseo> - You told me, when you had me in those pajamas, remember?
<Keiko> - ...no.
:Keiko sniffles.
<Haseo> - How on the day that you and Dusk were separated in real life, you cried so hard and so long that she finally caved and held you until you fell asleep, when no one else would.
<Keiko> - She said that was only to shut me up.
<Kaede> - That doesn't sound like someone that hates you though, does it?
<Keiko> - ....
<Kaede> - She might be crazy at times, but there has to be a reason she stays with you.
<Keiko> - I know why... it's because Dusk and I are all she has left.
<Haseo> - ?
<Kaede> - Keiko, what do you mean by that?
<Keiko> - My parents don't care about me, just my sister... but she flunked out of high school, so they... they disowned us both!
:Keiko cries again.
<Haseo> - And Dusk took you in?
<Keiko> - H-He wasn't there, but he-he got his parents to... to give us a home instead. He always cared about us so much-
<Kaede> - Don't talk about him like that! He's still alive!
<Keiko> - I... I don't know what I'd do without him. I don't wanna live without him!
<Haseo> - Keiko-

Zelkova walked back through the doors of the bridge instead of teleporting, catching everyone's attention.

He walked slowly up to the terminal with his head down.

When he looked up...

<Keiko> - ...no....
<Zelkova> - I'm sorry.
<Keiko> - Please! No!
<Zelkova> - ...he's...
:Zelkova grits his teeth.
<Zelkova> - a lost one....
<Keiko> - ....

It was a shriek that shook The World to its core.

Everyone, on every server, heard what could only be described not as ear-piercing, but a heart-piercing scream.

The unthinkable finally happened: Keiko and Dusk had finally been completely separated.

...

Netslum Tartarga - Experimental Chamber

There was no time to talk her down, no time to call her sister. There was no time for anyone to think, to react, or to plan.

The Chim Goddess appeared instantly at Dusk's side, his bed being a white futuristic-looking recovery capsule that, to the tear-blinded Keiko, looked more like a coffin.

The Goddess wrapped its arms around it and pulled it from its invisible tethers before taking off with it and her Assassins in tow. Whatever rational thought Keiko had left had all but evaporated.

She was going to find someone, or some way, to save her Dusk... one way or the other.

...

Netslum Tartarga - Bridge

<Zelkova> - First I find the Phases missing from my chamber, now this.
<Kaede> - Sir?
<Zelkova> - Someone broke in and took Skeith, Fidchell, and Gorre. I don't have time to pour over the security footage, so we're just gonna have to improvise.

Zelkova walked up to the terminal, and hit an emergency communication button. It connected him to the Indigo "@HOME", all current and past Indigo, the Serpent of Lore, the Moon Tree captains that were currently online... which amounted to none aside from Zelkova and Kaede themselves... and Kestrel's Gabi, who was also unfortunately offline. His next words were something he'd hoped he would never have to say.

<Zelkova> - As of right now, I, Luna of the Indigo, Zelkova of Moon Tree, declare that the Indigo as a separate faction of The World is placed on temporary hiatus. We must work with Security Division 2 to contain an imminent threat to The World and possibly the network.

<Zelkova> - Due to the attack of a previously unknown Indigo candidate, Dusk is now a Lost One. His falling comatose has caused Keiko to become berserk, and summon her own avatar-like creature, a being called the Chim Goddess.

Zelkova gulped.

<Zelkova> - My scans of the creature indicate that its power is roughly the same as what we theorize Cubia to be currently capable of. The difference is that the Goddess has control over the entire Chim Chim population, and has gifted them with higher levels of thinking and possibly the power to attack and hurt us not as characters of The World, but as people. She could have the strength to put anyone of us in the same state as Dusk, or Shino, for those familiar with the Terror of Death's background.

Haseo's face was all anyone needed to gauge his reaction to that bit of news.

<Zelkova> - Even worse, every area of The World except Lost Grounds and root towns that aren't Mac Anu must be considered occupied by an enemy force and avoided at all costs. Keiko's state of mind has been thoroughly traumatized; communication will likely now become impossible, and she may even compromise the mental state of all Chim Chim, causing them to become erratic and possibly attack. Until we ascertain her threat level, we must not think any less of even a single Chim Chim than we do a corrupted AIDA-PC.

<Zelkova> - Those Indigo and Security Division 2 members willing to fight on the front lines should meet immediately at the Serpent of Lore, where we will coordinate to decide on an intervention, attack, or counterattack plan before she can do too much damage. The rest of you, do not block any avenues of communication, and unless you have real life priorities that are much more personally important, please remain online and on standby in your @HOME's until further notice.

Zelkova switched off the program and turned toward Haseo and Kaede.

<Zelkova> - ...That hurt. That really hurt.
<Haseo> - We're really gonna have to fight her?
<Zelkova> - I hope not. I really hope it's just us talking her down.
<Kaede> - That's not likely, Master Zelkova.

Kaede pointed up to the terminal main screen, now showing the Chim Goddess appearing over Mac Anu, still with her troops, and with Dusk's container clutched in her arms. Keiko began to cry out in her confusion and agony.

<Keiko> - Please, can someone help us!? My (Dusk) needs help!!

Everyone on the bridge was caught off-guard by this monster's appearance; people flooded out of the Dome to see what the commotion was. She floated over the wall into the town's central plaza.

Mac Anu - Central

In each town, the Quest and Guild shops populated the same area, usually the central district. Mac Anu was no exception; multiple Guilds set up their shops as part of a bazaar around the district's big fountain and along the walls. Kestrel had set up shop directly in front of the fountain, where people arrived at the bottom of the staircase leading to the bridge to the dome. Moon Tree was to the right, and a guild called Canard sat on its left, where a dog-like character with pink hair and fur, wearing a small magician's robe and red pants with overall straps, was currently conversing with a boy in green. The rest of the shops in the area were currently closed; everyone was talking about the strange scream that had all but pierced the heavens a moment ago.

As people fell back from the Dome bridge, everyone's attention in the plaza was piqued, both by the flood and by the thing making its way over the archway above those PC's.

<Canard clerk> - S-Silabus!?
<Silabus> - Whoa! What is that?
<Moon Tree clerk> - Is that what cried earlier?
<Kestrel clerk> - Are those Chim Assassins?
<Keiko> - SOMEONE! HELP US!!

The Canard guildmates recognized that voice; Keiko had dragged Kazuya shopping in Dol Dona before a Quest and ended up chatting with the clerk long enough to be offered membership in the guild, which she accepted. She was their fifth-ever member, counting Canard's former guildmaster.

<Canard clerk> - No way....
<Silabus> - Is that really Keiko?
<Kestrel clerk> - What, that thing's controlled by a player?
<Canard clerk> - I don't... really know.
<Silabus> - It sure sounds like her.
<Kestrel clerk> - Hah, you're telling me there's an event that lets you dress up as a monster and raid a root town!? You got-
<Keiko> - YOU THINK MY (Dusk)'S SUFFERING IS FUNNY!?!?

Suddenly, Chim Assassins, a dozen of them; they fell from a black portal all around the Kestrel booth.

<Kestrel clerk> - Whoa, whoa, I didn't mean-
<Keiko> - WHY DO PEOPLE ALWAYS LAUGH AT US!?

The front Chim Assassin leapt up, its shuriken now at it's side and level with the ground as it made angry grumbling noises. Before the clerk could react, his throat was slashed out by the assassin's blade rocketing to the other side of its body.

The onlookers, but for a moment, were frozen in shock. Suddenly, everyone fell back...

the shopkeeper's PC, into death and gray ash...

the townspeople, away from the area...

the shopkeeper's body, from consciousness.

So some of this might reek of trying too hard, but I just let the story tell itself, like I always do. I think the biggest revision I did in glossing over the text was altering who Zelkova contacted to include the Moon Tree captains and Gabi... neither of which are in this part of the story anyway. It was less "oops, I left out these characters!" and more "crap, what can I do to write these people out so I can tell my story?" ACID's kinda becoming its own story anyway... maybe I could revise it as a standalone novel when I'm finished?

It's kinda unrealistic for every character to be up at midnight, but I'm not about to go study every character's personal schedules, so the timeline of events in the Chim Goddess disaster have to be taken with a massive grain of salt. It's the same reason, even though I love her to death, why I don't really go out of my way for every minute detail about Washu; there's the dedicated fan, and then there's the creep no one wants to go near. My memory already puts me in league with the creeps without any effort. :\

Anyway, I wrote all of this and log 19 just yesterday, except that first bit before the log declaration: THAT was from months, maybe years ago, when I first wrote Log X1 (it's the ending bit sans the first paragraph). What suddenly prompted me to write, well...

I'd been trying to remember and control my dreams for months now to no avail, and while reading through Hourou Musuko for the third time (caught up on it a few days ago, hadn't read it since Kotonoha's scanlations stopped), I became inspired to try a different route, exploiting a personal weakness to accomplish that goal: my sentimentality. If you've taken the time to read this story, then you actually know all about it through Keiko. She's not unrealistic, not some commentary on a particular type of person or anything else; she's the very bottom of my heart given a voice for the first time. Dusk is both the main antagonist and the kind of person I think could accept her at all, let alone love her (the fact that he loves her at all might be the most unbelievable part of the entire story). Also, I kinda wonder if anyone could figure out that Keiko was actually author self-insertion at its finest... not an autobiography by any means, but still?

Anyway, it both did and didn't work. I didn't even remember any dreams, but I DID wake up inspired and happy, so here we are!

This part of the story might end up going for a couple more logs than I thought (the pacing's just slower than I imagined it to be, though it's not a bad thing), but on the plus(?) side: -COOH returns next log, along with Langolier.
