Technically, he doesn't explicitly tell Light to translate the passage. We know that that's what's happening, but to someone who has only watched the dub, it could simply be Light translating a foreign passage into his own language.

Tabby's voice is not the second coming of the apocalypse. It's more like you guys just tripping over air. Tabby's dub voice...ftw.
Besides, I didn't think Misa was that great of a character so if her voice sucks, more power to her overall suckiness.

Just goes to show you can't please everyone. I'm just glad the there aren't as many people who are as hyper-critial about everything as you guys are. If everyone was like you guys then Anime would never leave japan to begin with. Then you guys wouldn't have anything to compain about to begin with.

Anyways I like the english voices. They deffinitly fit their characters.

Besides I always figured Tabby was there as fanservice fodder to begin with. So I didn't pay much attention to her to begin with anyways.

Tabby was NOT fanservice fodder! She was probably the most important character in all of Roots besides the Haseo/Shino/Ovan trio themselves. You can even say that Roots is HER story moreso than Haseo's.

Well, I've observed that most people dislike dubs because they're "too used to" their fansubs, which have direct translations that aren't reformatted for fluid speech or needs to conform with federal censoring, and have Japanese voices that are not only ascetically pleasing due to their exotic nature to Westerners, but are also usually handpicked by the original producers of the story. Frankly, your complaining makes it sound like Dub companies are being lazy and not trying to make quality dubs, and believe me, they are. There's money lost if they don't, but many anime fans who are spoiled by fansubs are simply unpleasable. I did an experiment of having a friend grow hooked on anime entirely by dub, and now he can't tolerate fansubs.

Frankly, yes, there ARE sometimes major errors in dubs, or things that should be changed, but it's usually not within the power of a Dub company to fix. For example, voices. It's not like they can recruit the original Seiyuu, and if they could, their accent would be atrocious. Believe it or not, their pool of potential voices is LIMITED. They have to find a good voice actor who's willing to work for a reasonable sum and have a suitable schedule with the Dub Team, and then they have to find someone willing to play that character, and THEN they have to pick someone who can do that character, and this usually trickles to a VERY small pool of voice actors to choose from, thus atrocious choices like Tabby's.


Frankly, I'm fine with complaining about dubs, but don't attack their producers like they're lazy asses who don't know what they're doing until you get off your behind and do a better job yourself. I f*cking hate conceited individuals.

Well, keep in mind that Japan is a language with literally millions of characters and words and grammar rules that are so unlike English's it's dizzying. You can't expect perfect translations all the time. As for the ones that effect plot flow, those are usually by terrible dubbers, like 4Kids, so I'll agree with you on those.

That said, I personally prefer subs and raws. I'm in love with the Japanese language.

That is so true. There are large differences between Japanese and English. There have been quite a few times were I've watched a Dub on DVD and hand the subs on to compare the direct translation from japanese to engish in the subs and the modified dialog of the voice acting. Usually they sync up pretty good, but every so once in a while I would see a sentence int he subs that was soo different and seemed so strange that it makes sence that they would change it in the voice acting, because if they did do a direct dubbing from the original that it wouldn't make sence to everyone else watching it. In fact quite a few times I would imagine that if they did do that then the people watching would wonder if the character is retarted.

There are so many differences in grammar and sentence structure between English and Japanese that they have to make minor changes to make sure that the viewer understands whats being said and not left scratching their heads.

Maybe if there was a bigger pool if voice actors to choose from then maybe they could make a dub to be more like you expect. But from what I understand many VA's are under contracts to certain production companies. So that also limits the number of available VA's. This isn't like mainstream media where you have to pay millions to an actor to star in a movie. They are paying not only for that actores voice, but also their image. But in the case of dubbing all they need is that persons voice. So they can aford to look for someone who will do the job for the lowest price.

Most languages are based on ancient latin and thats why its easier for Americans to get french, spanish, and a few other languages, even russian!
But the languages from the Orient arent based on latin and therefore are harder to get.

I do agree with the dubs lacking certain major plotlines, but of course every once in a while they actually improve the stroy
(i.e. FLCL, the Japanese kids have started watching it in English because we actually improved it!)

One of the things im kinda pissed at is that Japanese class is being taken out of American schools and all thats being offered is spanish, I will kill George W. Bush, and that only makes what I do seem ever more like a commendable action.

I havent heard the Japanese DeathNote, and I dont really plan on doing it either! If I hear a voice that seems totally out of place I'll check it out, but otherwise I say speaches sound much more profound when they're in a language you understand, another example of that would be when Light told Ryuk his plan to become a god with the DeathNote. Was that episode 1?

I guess another good dub example would have to be FullMetal Alchemist, I mean honestly, the American VAs were better than the Japanese VAs!

Ryuk is awesome Hes my favorite character thanks to the 3rd episode.. hes so ***** cleaver X'D I'd love to have him as a Shinigami if I had a Death Note.

My question is, what if you fill the DeathNote up all the way? Do you get new pages? Do you not have to die? Do you become a Shinigami yourself? Do you get a new DeathNote? WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU FILL ALL THE PAGES?!!!?!?!???!

The Death Note never runs out of pages, and humans, without exception, eventually die. No one becomes a Shinigami.
