i'd say it's far from it imo
elfen lied, now that's highly depressing
I've heard numerous people tell me that Evangelion pissed them off (one to the point where he swore off anime) because near the end it "got weird", I'm told like they did to His and Her Circumstances, which did make me stop watching the last disk. Elfen Lied could get a little dark/macabre at times, but I thought the ending was particurly light.
Of course, they didn't show Lucy/Nyuu's face, but it's so obvious that it's her they almost didn't need to.

the authors got depressed during the ending episodes of evangelion. it's a weird ending but nothing to get super angry about. also I said to wach the movie "end of evangelion". it has the true ending. once agin depressing, but i would just recommend waching evangelion for it's uniqeness.

Elfen Lied in my opinion was....Over the top in gore. But still good.It wasnt depressing thou.Just at some points you thought "Oh,thats kinda mean.Oh thats kinda sad." or you just jump out of your seat and said, "Thats just straight f*cked up!"

it annoys me when people only remember elfen lied for the gore/nudity, the story overshadows that by FAR imo

i still love it though

I love Evangelion too, but it really isn't that weird anymore compared to some of the other stuff that's being released  I think Higurashi no Naku Koro ni and Ergo Proxy are pretty close to it in psycho-weirdness.

but, higurashi is very easy to understand, it's a horror like anime
evangelion's just on another level

i saw the first ep of ergo proxy, but seen no more. how dull it was and how some stuff was designed, like to try to look new, yet old O_o
but still, that's no excuse to give up after one ep :(

It doesnt really annoy me when people remember the odd parts. Why?Because thats what was strived for. They wanted to keep the gore of the manga, and thats not something anime does. Its one of the only ones to go to such an extent, and leaves that impression most in peoples minds.
If Lucy wasnt killing everybody like she did,and Kouta wasnt seen in that akward position in episode 2 with Nyu,people wouldnt have really watched it.It was an attention grabber. But whatever...
And another recommendation is Maburaho. And if anybody says otherwise, buzz off.Its hilarious....And all you guys out there wish you were Kazuki.Dont lie.

It's true  8) I loved that anime for the most part. Only problem I had with it was at the end. They could've done something better with the very end, like have him split into 4 or 5 of himself and have each one only have romatic interest in 1 of the main girls or something(the 5th would think of all 4 girls just as good friends or have the hotts for Shino). Doing the 10 exact copies was kind pointless.. I dunno, it just annoyed me!

ok my turn for input.

i never finished elfen lied because my husband watched it without me and i never got around to finishing it. but what i saw was good.

hmm fruits basket was cool one of my favorites. same with peacemaker. i watched the first five ep. of gantz and it was freaky and gore-ridden but i liked it. .hack sign was groovy and i loved it. i started legend of twilight but quit (see a pattern i don't finish much) anything else??? samurai champloo was awesome i was seriously addicted for three days (owned the dvds and stayed up nearly every night watching until long after my husband went to bed) samurai deeper kyo was cool too but yet another of my unfinished series

(ps i just noticed woohoo i'm not a lurker anymore!!)

Definitely taking my chance of recommending Gintama, Scrapped Princess, He is My Master, Samurai Champloo, Cowboy Bebop, and Those Who Hunt Elves.

I don't recommend Fruits Basket if you're a yaoi/BL fan, and I don't recommend Hagaren (Full Metal Alchemist) if you've read the manga.

I know this may not strictly speaking count as anime, but I recently re-discovered Reboot. How could I have forgotten how much that show rocks? The characters are great, solid stories with healthy amounts of humor sprinkled everywhere, and even today the graphics still hold strong. Sound is even well done, often adding volumes to the humor (especially when Hack and Slash are in the scene). And the ending theme is awesome.

Reboot is a very good show but i don't know if it qualifies as anime becuse it's all computer graphics.

Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. It's tasteful humor (a tad dark humor perhaps?), the animation is colorful and stylish, and every single one of the characters is lovable XD It's really new, in fact there's only 3 episodes out right now in Japan. I've only watched two episodes and so far I am very pleased ^__^ I can't wait to see how this series progresses. You have to watch it! I think a lot of people here would be interested.

"only remember", as if that's all its about
it sure has a lot of it, but still, with its story, the story still overshadows all of that imo anyway
but forgetting or ignoring the whole story and thinking its all about the cool awesome gore and nudity and thats it, then that's what i mean

I would recomend Mushi-shi.It is a supernatural ghost anime with weird things going on with a deep plot.

I have to say, one of the best Animes I've ever watched is Darker than Black. No ones really heard of it, and its absouloutly amazing. Its very confusing at first, but you should understand it by the 8th episode.
