For next gen

Postby Kaori » Wed Nov 25, 2015 11:56 pm

So, I was thinking, which of the following is worth getting for this gen 2 years from now? A Wii-U? A PS4? Or a gaming PC?

PS4. Because you know that sooner or later, a .hack game will be available only for this console. .hack is the only video game series that matters! :P

No it doesn't for me, I've got broader tastes, I'm only leaning towards a PS4 because I want Bloodporne, XBone is not an option as you may have noticed since microsoft has screwed up with it big time, Wii U for Xenoblade, and maybe that Fire Emblem X Shin Megami Tensei game, but a PC is quite tempting, although more expensive, if I buy the right parts, it can last me multiple generations, ironic that .hack is played on a console whereas its a computer game in-game, with the recent trend of console games getting PC ports and how successful the PC market is, did it ever occur to you guys .Hack may be coming to a PC near you?

bloodporne? im guessing you mean bloodborn haha.

I would say Wii u, though I am kind of biased towards them and will always suggest nintendo, but I don't know how much longer the lifespan will be with the NX around the near future. Even though there is a nice lineup of games still to come. Next I would go Xbone, i enjoy it a lot, and backwards compatibility is a plus, but i see you don't want it lol. I have nothing on ps4 since i do not own one, for most things i want on it, with a few exceptions, I can get on steam.

Honestly, I would go PC knowing that it will last longer(imo) and now a days, whatever seems console exclusive whether ps or xbox, at some point still releases PC, with some exceptions.

I'm considering this baby since it will last me a crazy long while and is more powerful than a PS4:

To be honest, I'm not playing video games like I used to. I think there are like 2/3 games that I want in 2016 so far. I'm keeping my PS4 because I know CC2 will rise from hashes sooner or later and make one or multiple .hack games on PS4, and there's no way I'm not buying that!

A PS4. Wii U will die in the next 2 years, PS4 still has a ton of games that aren't out on it yet. If you get a PC you'll be missing FFXV, Persona 5, Dark Souls 3, and so on.

I can live without FF and Persona, FF isn't exactly fun anymore and Persona's old news now, bloodporne I can live without too, and who's to say those PS4 "exclusives" won't be coming to PC anytime soon? A lot of former "exclusives" are now on PC, and dark souls 3 PS4 only? Hahahahahahahaha!

You can't mod games on a PS4 anyway, so where's the fun in that? Trophies? Just bragging rights, gran turismo? Who plays racing games? Metal Gear? Kojima's gone, FF? Moving to PC and IOS, face it, everything is moving to PC these days.

For Kaori
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 834232848R

These days I recommend PC and one of the consoles(handheld as well depending on games you want). While most games are on PC these days there shall still be a few that remain exclusive on consoles(1st party titles).

When comes to PC gaming one needs an i7, a dedicated gpu, and at least 8 gigs of ram these days.

Haswell Gen 4 and Broadwell Gen 5 are great. So is Skylake Gen 6 but I don't think it is worth the upgrade unless one is coming from Sandybridge or Ivy Bridge.

Nvidia > AMD. AMD has good mid tier cards but they don't compete with Nvidia's high tier cards.

Intel's integrated gpus. No just no.

Desktops are much stronger than laptops but these days laptops have gotten a lot better. They can run games good and are portable.

I want to save up for a PC but I have no idea where to even begin. I've heard it's easier to build one, but I'm not sure how ready I am for such a feat...

I've been out of the market for a while now, so I can only give very very general advice. I don't know any of the specifics of any hardware anymore. Take what I say with a grain of salt.

First off, laptops are completely different from desktops, prepare to pay extra for the compact size of a laptop. You're also going to have to pay whatever companies want if you're going that route, because building a laptop just isn't really done.

As far as desktops go:
Alienware is overpriced at every price point. You're paying for a brandname and for their professional designers to model cases—not for function. It's the same for Ibuypower and other similar sites. I haven't looked at these sites in a long time, but I imagine the story is still the same.

Dell used to be really really bad, but there's not much difference between them and other major brands anymore. Some people say that boats are something you buy if you want to watch money sink down a hole really fast. My dad used to say the same about Dell, but the stigma isn't deserved anymore.
Some of the very low end Dell Desktop PCs are actually competitively priced with building your own—sans the graphics card which you would still need to purchase. This is true *mostly* because of software prices (which in my opinion are obscene). You'd have to buy an OS anyway, and I think dell computers come with Microsoft Office (if people care about microsoft office anymore).
This gets less and less true as you move up the price range—they too start over charging compared to what it would cost you too build your own.

I would still recommend building one from scratch. http://www.tomshardware.com/ is a good resource to learn about computer parts. https://pcpartpicker.com/ is another resource.

I built mine 8 years ago and its still playing all the games I want it to (at a better framerate than consoles with farther draw distance and other such things). I spent about $1000 on my pc back when I built it and EVERYTHING, as near as I can tell, has only gotten cheaper. I only recently upgraded my graphics card because my old one became legacy hardware and wasn't going to receive any more drivers updates.

Don't skimp on the PSU. Corsair is a good brand for PSU and RAM.
Sapphire is a good brand for Video Cards-great customer service. It's better to have one high end video card than two mediocre SLI'd video cards
Intel is better CPU wise than AMD and has been for a long time now.
An i5 cpu is good enough for the majority of users — most things don't take advantage of hyperthreading yet (so many games still only use one core) so unless you're into sound design you probably aren't looking at getting an i7. Another possible use for hyperthreading is streaming on twitch.tv or whatever.
Get a motherboard that fits the CPU, the RAM, and the videocard. Other considerations include USB ports.

SSDs are a good investment in my opinion. The boot time of your PC will be much faster and then several games that I play would be a massive pain if they weren't on an SSD (such as Path of Exile).

Actual assembly isn't any harder than legos. Just make sure everything is going in the right holes.

The majority of the maintenance for a computer is cleaning the dust out and properly cleaning, then reapplying cooling paste between your CPU and the CPU's fan every 6 months or so. It's not really necessary that often, but it's good to do so.

Definitly not alienware no matter what, and as much as I want a desktop, my room doesn't have the space for one, and my sister made it abundatly clear she's getting me a laptop no matter what the price as long as I graduate college, there is no place in our house for a desktop anyway, everybody does their business on ipads, I'm the only person who still uses microsoft in the house, even the househelp use iphones, see what I'm dealing with here?

Yeah, that's a bit of an unfortunate situation— Apple used to be better for graphic design and sound design, but now the architecture of the CPUs isn't actually different from other PCs (so the software that was built off of old Apple CPUs isn't technologically restricted anymore as far as I'm aware—but may be restricted by contract). On top of that, from what I can remember, Apple is generally overpriced for performance (less so than alienware) and isn't modular so you can't upgrade it without replacing it. Though that's mostly only a concern for desktops.

Unfortunately I don't have any helpful advice for choosing a Laptop. I don't know what brands are bad or good. I guess make sure it has enough USB ports (and what other ports you want) at least 4gb ram (probably 8gb) and a good cpu - because you're stuck with an onboard graphics card.

For what it's worth:

Personally, most of the console games I play are either on handhelds or on older consoles (often emulated, strictly for convenience of not having to go drag out the correct console and disc). A lot of releases don't interest me and the ones that do interest me are the ones available on PC or the handhelds (DS and PSP). I might get a PS4 just for Persona 5.

Mostly though, I'm wondering when the next PSP iteration will come out and improve on the Vita (which is already a technological feat that only keeps me away due to its proprietary memory cards—rather than using normal SD cards). I also wonder how much longer the DS line will last. It got that tech upgrade relatively recently with the "New3DS"

im sure dell has gotten better over the years. but recently, i've gotten a desktop and laptop from them after replacing my old ones, and im already disappointed with them. But that is just me being picky, after having an amazing asus laptop haha.

Yeah, here's a problem, my sister told me to just choose a high end laptop I like as my graduation gift since there is absolutely no space for a desktop in the house right now, but then she offered me a VERY sadistic choice, I can get the former, or buy the desktop parts but I'll have to set them up in my farm, and my farm has NO INTERNET, and actually, the place is so remote there aren't even any telephone lines, and getting a wireless is not an option either as there are no cell towers around the area so the reception is very bad, so yeah, I'll just settle for whatever next gen laptop comes out in 1 and a 1/2 years.
