Subs or Dubs?
Do you prefer to watch animes in subtitles or english dubs?
For me, it's usually subs, but I like the english dubs of Code Geass for whatever reason. Probably because of Lloyd.

Re: Subs or Dubs?
I would have to say subtitles. I mean, I really think that japanese dubs are way much better than many other dubs.

Re: Subs or Dubs?
subtitles BUT some dubs beat the originals like cowboy bebop , the new release "kurokami" is looking nice too dubed so i like both really
Re: Subs or Dubs?
Both. If the English dub is on part with or better than the Japanese dub, then I'll watch it. Sometimes I'll watch both. Typically, though, I don't refuse to watch a dub unless it's really, really bad.

Re: Subs or Dubs?
Well I mostly only watch subs so... subs. And usually I can tolerate subs more since dubs can be pretty bad at times. Besides, it's much easier for me to access subs as opposed to dubs since I don't get any channels that show anime on my TV and I'm poor so buying DVDs is pretty egh. The anime industry is dying because of me... Sorry. D: Sometimes I just watch anime raw even though I don't understand what they're saying. x__x;
Re: Subs or Dubs?
I watch some of both, which ever version I like better I stick with. Recently I've been sick and tired of dealing with subtitles since I don't want to put more effort in reading than listening (at times I even drown out the voices, strangely never had a problem reading and watching what's happening though) and at this point I'd hate to be associated with the "side" that feels that the Japanese version is always superior even though they usually don't understand the damn language aside from a few words. Hell I don't understand Japanese so aside from listening to the types of voices each character has there's no point in bothering dealing with a language that's foreign to me and KNOW I will never learn nor do I have the desire to.
So I'd have to say dubs, I do make time to watch a subbed version or watch it there completely if the dub is unbearable to listen to, if I hate both I go with the dub though assuming I'm still interested in the anime.

Re: Subs or Dubs?
I gotta say dub, because in many cases the subs go by too fast to read during important parts, where dubbing can get the job done by simple tone of voice.
My favorite dubs?
Ghost in the Shell: SAC (and 2nd GiG) (Mary McGlynn as Motoko)
Fullmetal Alchemist
Cowboy Bebop (of course) (Mary McGlynn as Julia)
Code Geass (duh) (Mary McGlynn as Cornelia)
FLCL (even the japanese like it better english dubbed)
Outlaw star (even though Aisha and Melfina coulda been better) (Mary McGlynn as "Hot ice" Hilda)
Gundam Wing (the VA's were good, even if it didn't sync with the mouths)
As you can Tell my favorite VA is Mary McGlynn.
Bad ones?
Noein
Gad Guard
R.O.D. the TV
Evangelion (put your cross away, I don't burn)
Tenchi Muyo
Ruroni Kenshin (monotones do NOT display emotion) (Mary McGlynn as Shura)
Virus
Street Fighter II V (Mary McGlynn as Dr. Hanna)
Bleach (not really much to argue, I just didn't like the American VA cast for the characters)
Naruto (...did anyone actually like either?) (Mary McGlynn as Kurenai, and Grass Ninja Orochimaru)

Yeah Liam O' Brian is a really good voice actor, I like his style. =] I met him at an anime convention one time and he's a really cool guy.Azure Knight wrote:Do you prefer to watch animes in subtitles or english dubs?

For me it doesn't really matter, I mean whichever one I watch first I'll usually finish all the way but I'm not one of those people who "care" too much about subs and dubs. Basically what I do is I'll check out both the sub and dubbed version of an anime and choose which ever one I like and watch it. There are anime out there that I'll prefer in subbed or dubbed though. =)

I really like Lloyd's voice, and O'Brian made Endrance's voice more bearable for me.SINSTAR wrote:Yeah Liam O' Brian is a really good voice actor, I like his style. =] I met him at an anime convention one time and he's a really cool guy.Azure Knight wrote:Do you prefer to watch animes in subtitles or english dubs?

I have another question: Which do you like better for the .hack series?
For me, it's kinda mixed, because I like Haseo's voice, but guys with high voices like Bo and Endrance literally sound like girls.
Re: Subs or Dubs?
Well both have its ups and downs...
Subs you get to hear the original voices but the person translating them might do whatever he or she wishes with them,
also they are blurry sometimes or too fast or too slow...
but by doing this you get to learn japanese! which is... nice to know.
But,I prefer Dubs, this way I get to enjoy the anime more and the voices are not too bad, love Edward Elric and Ichigo Kurosaki's english voices!
<3 to you !

Re: Subs or Dubs?
Well unless the dub is absolutely horrible I always watch it first. Some of the newer series like Full Metal Alchemist and Fruits Basket have pretty good dubs in my opinion. By newer I mean 2000 or later. Anyway, although I prefer it to be as original as possible I like to be able to concentrate on the show without worrying about reading anything.
Then if I like the show I will go back and watch it in Japanese with subtitles. Having already watched it in English, at least for the shows that are done well, makes watching the sub even more enjoyable. It’s easier to concentrate on the words since you already know what is going to happen.
And then there are some shows that I never did manage to finish the dub version, like Soul Hunter and Sailor Moon. They were just too mutilated and within a very short time they just grated on my nerves.

Re: Subs or Dubs?
I prefer dubs because reading subtitles all the time ruins the fun of watching the show. I'd rather just sit back and listen rather than have to read.
Re: Subs or Dubs?

I also support Subs, unless the dubs are well done by people who can depict emotion. Sadly, more often then not, the English dubs putrid.

But if it wasn't for Japan, our anime would be Disney Channel cartoons. Now is that what you want for America, son? I think NOT.
Support America by watching Japanese cartoons!
