Re: G.U. is emo
Im with Wander on this one. GU is too emotional for my tastes. Tree stumps... yeah, Ill take them before crying teenagers.
Re: G.U. is emo
Now i do read some agree. Yes, i'm with Wander at this one, especially Atoli, bah.
Re: G.U. is emo
Would anyone play G.U. if Haseo didn't feel emotionally engaged? Consider, any dramatic scene in G.U. where the characters really doesn't care about what happens. It is overdramatic, in order to make the audience understand the characters.
Not to mention, G.U. was made by japanese after all. : P

Re: G.U. is emo
One can be emotional without being emo/so emotional that it makes the gamer want to throw up. Shadow of the Collosus was a love story for the most part IMO, and it didnt have any of the stupid stuff GU has and it was emotional; but the difference is, its good emotion.
Re: G.U. is emo
You know, "Emo" isn't exactly a derogatory term as many people mistakenly believe. For those who think its all crying and cutting yourself and dumb sh*t like that, well...try investing in a thing called a "Dictionary."
Okay. Maybe the .hack//G.U. characters tend to go a little "overboard" with their emotions, but tell me none of you have ever felt really passionate about something.

Nothing has made me laugh more than that quote right there. Well, except AT's plan about sending 500 gay magazine subscriptions to someone here. That was just hilarious. We had a discussion about this in Western Philosophy. We play games because we want to do things we can't experience in this world without penalty. On an Online RPG, its possible to fake everything. Your name, gender, preferences, attitudes, etc. So to say that an online fantasy RPG is more real than the real world is not only laughable, but shows no thought as well.I completely understand what makes an online RPG more real than the real world.

At first glance, yeah, that sounds like a load of crap. But there’s actually quite a bit of truth to that statement. Many people tend to express themselves more freely online than in the real world. I believe that’s the aspect of the online world that Dengar was speaking of.AuraTwilight wrote:Oh come the f*ck on, that's pushing it.I completely understand what makes an online RPG more real than the real world.

I guess some people just don't understand what it's like to be unable to express yourself in real life.AuraTwilight wrote:Oh come the f*ck on, that's pushing it.
Re: G.U. is emo
G.U. seems pretty real to me. A little over the top sometimes, perhaps, but given what is going on it's not so much. I've been playing MMO's for years and I never saw anything in G.U. that I hadn't in actual games, in terms of being dramatic that is. There is always tons of drama in a MMO especially with "hardcore" players.
I've seen plenty of whining and moaning over PK's, drama over people quitting, and many many other things. A lot of which just seems silly to get worked up about but people do. Just look at a big message board for any MMO and I bet you'll see way more stuff with people whining then anything else. It's not uncommon, at all, and even worse in game at times. It's by far the worst with high level players. Elitism and all that. Not far behind is a lot of drama from low levels, though.
Just the way it is. Often times there is even that much more drama in game then in life because of people that think they can act however they want because it's "only a game" too. You know the internet mentality in general. As has been said it may just be a game but in the end there are real people behind the characters which is a recipe for drama in and of itself. You form bonds. People you like, people you don't like, and things both ways as well.
Then we have "The World" all of the above plus so much more. It's an expansive online game with many millions of players for one so of course you're going to see all kinds. On top of that it offers a more "real" experiance then anything we have now with head sets and is very emmersive. If there is so much drama in a game that doesn't draw you in half as much of course there is going to be tons in one that does. Of course add to all that all the crazy stuff that's going on with people going into comas and the like and the drama explodes. It all works, in my opinion, and seems right to me.
The only thing G.U. really suffers from, at times, is silly/poor writing. A really dramatic moment for example and all of a sudden you get "I guess I'll log out and check my email or something." Other than that the way G.U. flows is great, I think.

aw................ If you sendt G.U as a letter, i could wery well post something...Wander wrote:IT IS INCREDIBLY EMO
If I found out my girlfriend was in a coma, I wouldn't whine to other players about random **** constantly like a little whiney emo ****.
G.U.
Atoli: "Blah blah blah...the flowers are pretty...blah blah...Sakaki is hawt...blah blah blah...(btw I cut myself irl and showing panties whilst doing it makes me hawt, I've sent pics*)"
Haseo: "HERE I BLAH!!!! BLAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!!....BLAH BLAH OVAN BLAH BLAH BLAHH!!! YOU ALWAYS LEAVE BEFORE I CAN TELL YOU HOW I FEEL!!!* AND NOW YOU'RE DOING IT AGAIN!!!"
Kuhn: ...pst4cyber 4 graders*
Piros the 3rd: "Hark! He of fair eyes! Why art thou so emo?"
IMOQ
Kite: "Blah. Blah blah. Blah blah blah Aura blah. Orca blah blah blah blah blah. Balmung is a douche. Now let's kill these ****."
Balmung: "I AM NOT A DOUCHE!! DRAW YOUR SWORD NOAA!!! ...btw...I is a douche. can i have ur address, err...member address?"
Blackrose: "I'm really really really emo behind the scenes but only whine about it once, and that eventually leads to some hawt poontang in a chapel*"
All in all, the IMOQ attitude seems to be: "Dude! My best friend fell unconcious! WTF?! Let's save him! Let's do this, DOOOOOTHACKERSSSSS!!!"
And G.U. is: "Dude! I just joined this game and this creepy stalker guy is after me and all of the game gets off on having cyber slaughter secksy time, and btw your guild is retarded and omg you look like Shino and wtfbbqsauce my level fell to 1!!?? and Sakaki is a douche and you're pansexual-ness creeps me out and blah blah blah"
Kite hangs out with AIs, Haseo hangs out with emo AIs that are copied from the pimps that hung out with the cool AIs. And Haseo is wearing ass-plates. But...with Endrance around it's better than clenching.
Seriously, .hack//EMO...errr...G.U. just doesn't flow as smoothly. There's so much drama between players I feel like I'm playing Nurato fillers as a game. They just can't seem to get to the business at hand without getting into how sad they are or something. It's ridiculous. Don't get me wrong, I love a good emotional story (I play Shadow of the Colossus and Ico) but just...what happened to all the REAL problems?
All the yelling and crying and stuff is just...yucky. I've been camped for hours at a time and I never felt as angry/frustrated as Haseo does 9/10 of the times Haseo does.
As Haseo himself says, "COME ON."
oh yea. atoli is a crybaby...
Re: G.U. is emo
Are you sure? People usually think that they would act like this and that in some situation, but when the cruel reality strikes you. It won't be pretty.Wander wrote:If I found out my girlfriend was in a coma, I wouldn't whine to other players about random **** constantly like a little whiney emo ****.
I never thought about a particular death that ossured inevitabletly and I was acting very, well out of my usual character I would say. Shouting and such.
People act differently in different situations, and Haseo and company have had some rough exsperiences in their life and try to deal with it in their own way.
Reality is rather "emo" and how you deal with it is up to the person.
I think G.U. gives a nice image what can happen when you just let the feelings drive you.
I liked both IMOQ and G.U., they were both very emotional from the point of different kind of characters.
Re: G.U. is emo
Exactly! Theres nothing stopping you from doing so. Theres no boundaries. You are absolutely free to do whatever you want. Whose gonna tell you no?Tri-Xth wrote:i tend to lie in online games
For those types of people, they have the ability to "express themselves freely" because they are protected. They have the ability to act without consequences because its never an in-person meeting. I lie a lot during online games, especially Starcraft and WoW. So whose to say that im not expressing myself freely compared to the next guy? I don't need to prove it because I do it myself. Besides, who's to say that lying to others isn't a way of expressing yourself?Reon wrote:For those types of people, they have the ability to "express themselves freely" because they are protected. Re: G.U. is emo
Online worlds sometimes feel more real exactly because they are not.
As for Wander, you have to understand that people play a game to have fun, and when people spoil their fun, they get sad. It's a natural order of business.

Re: G.U. is emo
Oh this is rich. Did you think I was refering to myself about being a liar? Don't worry, I understand the folly of that kind of thinking. When I said that I "do it myself," I meant that I'm better at expressing myself online.Wander wrote:I once believed that. It took a social 'canonball' to make me see otherwise. Someday you're going to realize the flaw behind that way of thinking, and it's going to be very painful on your conscious. It's not something you're going to just stop doing because someone told you to...but you should seriously ponder what you're doing. A lie that you made up for people to percieve you a certain way isn't who you really are, and if you're unsure who you really are, you need to go find out. If you're like me you might figure it out by finally seeing through your own lies and figuring out your own moral threads.
It's made me more emotionally numb. Perhaps you should think about that.

But no, I try not to. ^_^
Anyway, on topic, I'm just gonna agree that GU is a little overly emo. I liked IMOQ better.
Re: G.U. is emo
You should watch 4koma, specifically number 3. It covers the teen thing pretty well IMO.
Anyhow, yeah, I guess GU is abit over-the-top, but then again, if you put yourself in the shoes of Haseo, who watched two people that were close to him slip into coma, then I bet you would be a little distraught as well. That and the fact he is easily annoyed and a teen(refer to 4koma #3), then I could understand why he's the way he is.
I haven't read GU+, so the whole Atoli cutting this is new to me. She is suicidal(btw, in that pic, SHES DOING IT WRONG, UP AND DOWN THE ROAD KIDS, NOT ACROSS!), she needs an outlet; not someone like Sakaki either. That's all I'm saying, cause I don't know anything about it(Atoli cutting herself that is, aside from what was in the games).
I think GU does a better job showing emotion than IMOQ, even if it is way over the top. I liked it

Re: G.U. is emo
If this is about Gaspard, we're talking about some poor kid with weight problems who experiences nothing but bullying in real life. The World is the only place where he can be himself and have fun. And then people try to ruin it there as well, that's pretty shocking. No matter what anyone says, Gaspard's feelings are genuine.Wander wrote:It's one thing to be upset, it's a whole different thing to break down and sob about it.
