Artists, What --weapon-- do you use ? (Share your art techni

Post by Rykar »

For me, I used to draw with a pencil and Neopiko pen and eraser then I went to the rookie tablet drawer. I am still having trouble of having the tablet gripping, but I am still doing pretty well.

For proportional accuracy along with poses etc, I am decent at it. I get errors in some ways and make mistakes in part ways.

For coloring I do get a lot of difficulty of making CGs. I really want to learn how to CG from a professional if possible, concept or cell, anything really to help me improve it.

Environment art style is something I have a bit of trouble with. But I'll try to get used to it.

I never took art classes, until now for the summer. But they are just mostly for fun activity.

So I am still having trouble with tablet pen usage, CG coloring mostly, and proportion and environment for minor problem.

I've never taken any art subject ever so I'm pretty much struggling on the drawing bit.

I usually use a mechanical pencil to draw, Faber Castell artline pens to outline (or maybe Pilot ones). That's if I don't use Photoshop to digitally ink it. XD Otherwise I'd use... well, Photoshop CS.

Lantis: I've seen your drawing style, and you did get the proprotions and the poses correctly :) so I dont find them to be bad at all. Really good for an artist that didn't take any art classes before anyways :D . I'd like to see a cleaner version of that Atoli x Alkaid though.

I'm poor TT__TT So I use mech pencils or other type of pencils then I use writing pens (Like those cheap blue/black ones) and then coloring pencils to end it. Sometimes I also like to draw in paint ^^

I'm not so very...OMG FANCY when it comes to my technique. 8D;;

I just use a Wacom Tablet + Pen with adjusted pressure sensitivity and firmness, along with OpenCanvas 4.5.09. 8D
For lineart, I either do it digitally or sketch it out beforehand and just scan it. I too have some trouble finding proper proportions, though I know you've noticed my amount of...female art. 8D;;; It's the easiest form for me to draw for some reason, har.
I'm not so fond of hard cellshading, so I usually soften the edges of the colors to make it blend.

AND THAT'S ABOUT IT. D:

LONG POST WATCH OUT XD
argh, i cant belive i got logged out @_@
anyway you dont have art lessons arnt important, i havent had a real lesson. i should be getting them in september when i start my new school :D the internet is the best teacher you can get. so just search for tutorials. ill do some cheep ones here for you

im guessing you allready know how to use lineart. useualy i use photoshop to sketch up lineart.
i use one layer to sketch it up usualy in light grey
and another layer to get a clearer sketch in blue or a red
than a nother layer and than i lineart in black

but if i use traditional methods like pencil i use a 4H or 2H pencil ( hard / light pencil ) to sketch it and than i go over it with a H or HB pencil ( moderatly hard/soft )
Pencils go from 9H from lightest to 9B softest.

i dont usuealy colour with traditional and i use photoshop 0.7.

hers some tutorials i did for a freind.
Pen tool use
Image
Rememer to use CTRL to move the line to make it curved ;D

Layers

Image
Abuse your layers!
If you have scaned up lineart, duplicate your lineart to another layer, and set it to multiply. this will alow you to colour under that layer without going over the lineart.

EDIT forgot to add colour lock method XD ( i wish photoshop wasnt so slow loading )
Colour lock
Image
I dont recomend colour lock, you can see it on other paint programs, which is why im saying it. its usefull to know its there.
But its annoying, if you make a mistake its harder to fix than with layers.
Pro = You dont colour out of the place you want to colour
Con = If you make a unavoidable mistake you have to start from the begining :L

Gradient colour method:
Image
i sugest you use cell shading to colour when starting. its simple ,easy and dosnt look too bad. you just need a little practice
after you get used to cell shading and gradient, you can use textures. like this:
Image

for that picturs lineart click here : http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/no ... rmcopy.jpg

i perfer paying more attention to lineart, as you can colour is in base colours and itll still look good. but heres a picture i finished yesterday with lineart and colour
Image

if you want to practice you tablet abilitiieesss, i sugest using a pchat or oekaki. thats where i started. XD just practice man ;3

i hope that helped a little, just try and read my crapy hadwriting XD forgive me forthat :L i try

if you want to know my technique... uhm.... go to deviantart.com ... and search ' TUROTIAL ' XDD seriously it helps alot.

@nonobot: Your tutorial is really helpful with the pen tool that I've just practiced with, but the question was can the pen tool keep it's smoothness as the tablet does? because sometimes it looks like pen tool gets a bit of edges that gets carried away with pixels.

and I was wondering if there is a way to reduce the size of the pixels when I use your method D:

uhm, yes, when you have the pen tool active,
and have it on page,
right click
select ' stroke path '
and check the box that has ' simulate presure.

make sure your using the brush and not the pencil tool XD ;3

well, you may have the image magnified, if not. finish your picture reguarly. and make the image smaller XD but i think your using a brush that is ither too thick or the wrong type of brush ;0

 ...uhm, yeah! XD its best to do the lineart with a round brush on 1 pxl its its small lines your looking for.
basicaly, thicker you want it, bigger the pxl. smaller and more detailed use a 1pxl brush.
if your doing a realy big picture, use maby a 2pxl or 3 for simple lines :B

I think they are talking about photoshop's pen tool when CGing :p

anyhow

Do you have to use a tablet in order to use the pen tool to perfection? :O

Since I'm still practicing with Photoshop, I like using pencils, ink, and eraser. :D I also use MS Paint and Oekaki when I'm bored and feel ultra-crackish.

Well if anyone has seen my art (as a matter of fact I draw mostly weapons XD) I use a 0.5 machanical pencil (they have the best erasers) I use it pritty much because I can do really small details and shade well with them.

I suppose not. XD I don't have a tablet, so I use the pen tool to outline digitally, with a mouse of course. (although trackpads on laptops are kind of... 8D not so good to work with, imo).

Wacom and Photoshop.

Proportions can be difficult. The method I've found to be most useful for accurate proportions is to open a new layer and use a light color (usually light blue or pink) to draw the general shape of what I'm going to be drawing, so that I have the post down before I attempt the rest. Then I open a layer above that and draw in the details over the guide lines.

Duno if this helps or not. It's just the way I do it.
