A little ramble... this might be in the wrong section, but meh, if it is, just move it.
I'm a huge fan of video game music. And when I say huge, I mean HUGE. Almost all of what I listen to is VG music. A lot of the vocal songs I do get into are from videogames or at least somehow related to them. But I have trouble expanding my tastes, and so my knowledge is rather limited.
That being said... I've played quite a few different RPGs. Some have good music, others have so-so. Touhou Project is about the best music I've heard outside of a RPG, and I have to say it's pretty damn close to the top.
But really, nothing, and I mean NOTHING, beats .hack//G.U.'s soundtrack in my eyes. The game's music is pure genius. You can make arguments for Tsujiyoko and Sakuraba, but Fukuda just blows them out of the water. Well, blows pretty much everyone out of the water. I really have not heard any better game music in any genre.
And I've seen people complaining about the lack of new tracks in .hack//Link. Well, the fact is... the original tracks in Link are pure genius as well. Upon hearing you could have the regular battle theme from Link in Tales of Graces through Asbel's Haseo outfit, I just about spazzed. It's that good. I'd take it over normal Tales music anyday.
But one thing I have to say is... the original .hack game soundtrack wasn't exactly my favorite. It was still good, don't get me wrong... but it just wasn't the best. It felt like it was composed by someone who was relatively new to composing. And again, this is my opinion. I could be dead wrong... but that's just how it feels.
So overall, I'd have to say G.U. > Link > IMOQ. G.U. was by far the best, Link was exceptional enough to still be above my other favorite soundtracks, and IMOQ was kind of on the level of Tales of the Abyss - not omgwtfawesome like the others, but definitely far from the worst thing I've ever heard.
G.U.'s soundtrack is so magnificent that it literally never gets old - every time I listen to it feels like the first time. I can see no flaws in it, and there are perhaps two tracks I don't like... and even those I can admit are extraordinary. It makes me upset that the game as a whole doesn't receive more attention, but its music, more than anything else about it, needs a lot more love. Something that incredible deserves to be recognized.
And that concludes my rant. You're allowed to disagree with me, point out flaws in my opinion, mistakes I made... as long as you don't try to impose on me. I have my opinion, you have your opinion, I'd like for them to remain separate.
let's cross the sky, to the future!
